Luiz Gustavo

If you play a 3 man central midfield then you'd get away with someone like Gustavo. In our system he's probably not got enough about him to be worth while.

Haven't really seen him play, but he seems to be similar to Fletcher? In that case I think he would still be useful for our squad. Fletcher when fit played plenty of games for Utd - his passing was never that great but it didn't stop him being an effective performer for us.

1. No law says that United have to play 4-4-2.
2. We can't be sure what system Moyes will favour.
3. I don't see why playing Gustavo and Carrick behind Kagawa wouldn't be good. All three of them are good passers of the ball and Carrick and Gustavo can give Kagawa the platform to create and shine.

We're not going to sign him though, that's obvious. And frustrating.

If Phil Jones can play in our midfield, Gustavo is more than worthwhile.

I'd agree he'd be a good acquistion for us but would he immediately start for Arsenal? Arteta, Wilshere, Cazorla seem to disagree though or would the Spaniard be shifted onto one of the wings?

Good post.

Well he'd give competition for Arteta and for tougher games allow you to shore things up, good problem to have either way.

The Cazorla Wilshere Arteta midfield didn't work. Our good run at the end of the season saw Ramsey come in and Cazorla do more from a wide position.

How do you see it working if a DM of any kind comes in, like Gustavo. Arteta and Gustavo holding, Wilshere in front, Cazorla wide, and Ramsey on the bench? Ramsey has been exceptional in pre-season so it would be harsh to drop him.

It depends on what Wenger wants from the players. I think Cazorla is better in the middle, and Gustavo might give us the cover to allow Wilshere and him to play together. That'd be a big job because neither of them will offer defensive support. Ramsey and Gustavo or Arteta and Gustavo could give us real endurance and great cover for our defence, which would mean Jack or Santi would have to be sacrificed, or at least Santi moved to the wing. If Jack hits his stride he'll be undroppable, and so will Santi. Big decisions, but if we stay injury free and our players perform to their abilities I see Ramsey and Rosicky losing out this season. A few 'ifs' there though.

Our system hasnt had 2 proper strikers for a while now. It'l change even more if Rooney leaves. If we're playing Kagawa as a No 10, it will be a 3 man midfield. Carrick and Gustavo behind him would be superb.

Yeh, I tend to agree. I really don't like Santi on the wing but we might have to see more of it. Still, we need quality midfield cover so the potential signing of Gustavo is relatively exciting.

Yeah, Arteta has done well at Arsenal but he's not a natural DM, Gustavo would be a good fit for them, and us for that matter.

Nor isn't Alonso or even Carrick. Yet they always furthest back compared to their midfield partners.

Arteta does a better job than Song for them, who felt like going forward at any given time. Hence why Arsenal have improved defensively in the last year.

Well I would say both Carrick and Alonso are good holding players, able to screen the defence and playmake from there. I wasn't criticizing though, personally though I wouldn't say he's as good as those two are in that role, and Arsenal could do with someone else who is more experienced there, both as an alternative to him and to play with him in the tougher games if they want to go that way.

I've been amazed with Arteta's defensive positioning. Moyes basically played him out of position for years, but I guess he might have been forced to like Fellaini. He's not absolutely top class, but our win percentage without Arteta is QPR-esque.

Arteta was key for Moyes in his more advanced position too in fairness.

Alonso was never a natural DM though. He had Mascherano alongside him at Liverpool.

Just like Arteta though he's slowly been moved into that position. You don't need to be a tough tackling midfielder to be a DM. Arteta was one of the best midfielders in the league last season. I'd say possibly only Carrick, if we talking centre midfielders was better than him last season.

Yeh, he's good technically so on a limited budget, he had to be stuck further forward. I'm really just saying that I never saw that many defensive qualities in Arteta before he came to Arsenal, but he seems to have them in abundance.

SSN reporting that Arsenal are in talks with Bayern.
I seriously wish we would bid for him.

I'm going to try and remain calm following this turn of events, but this is a bit pathetic from a United POV...

He's very likely to go below 20mil too. Talk about value in the fecking market.

I'm still worried someone's going to hijack this. How can we do this unchallenged?

This guy will be gold for you I fear. He's quite a bulldog on the pitch and gives you something you have lacked in recent years. Bollocks we aren't in for him. He reminds me a bit of Fletcher during he excellent period.

Am I the only one that thinks he's not all that? He seems alright, but nothing to get menstrual about.

I have absolutely no fecking clue. He'd improve not just us, even Chelsea. City and Spurs too before they actually went ahead and got CMs in.

Gustavo to Arsenal for less than 20mil would be fecking mind boggling because if we went for him, we'd get him, no questions asked.

Gustavo, whilst not having the stardust of Fabregas, is probably exactly what United need - someone to prevent an uncomfortable dependancy on Carrick and someone capable of dovetailing with him.

He'll be a terrific signing for Arse.

He's what we need. I don't see why we aren't even interested.

He's the best of the bunch that could be termed as gettable. Sure i'd rather we got a Vidal, Modric or a Fabregas but that isnt going to happen. Considering what we have at CM, he'd be a top purchase.

Well you won't get a Xavi or Iniesta. But he is a really hard worker on the pitch with great vision, good passing and shooting. A real allrounder.

He's going to be a huge success for Arsenal if they get him and yet another player we'll regret not going for. Then again I doubt we've had time to do an extensive scouting on him as it's only been clear that he'd be available for a couple of weeks and it'd take us far more time to assess if the player is good enough to improve midfield.
