Liverpool 2016/17 - Performance and chat thread.

Yep, we fell behind early but came back with a Coutinho brace if I'm not mistaken.

Didn't know it was Mourinho at the helm went Dortmund beat them in the semis. Admittedly, we certainly don't have a striker like Lewandowski right now who can put four goals past Real.

We have the Belgian Lewandowski.

Saying that, how do you feel Liverpool's TW is going, and do you feel your squad is strong enough to challenge top four? I think it will be interesting to see Klopp now that he has had time to put his mark on the team. I do think that the squad is still quite a bit weaker than the other top four contenders and I'd fear for Liverpool's chances because of that but admittedly I might be way off the mark as I don't follow Liverpool too closely.

Actually I think that 'squad-wise' is one of our strengths with decent cover in almost every position (bar LB). It is 'first team' strength that is lacking in a couple of positions, namely LB and CM (we need to see how Matip & Ragnar get on before calling that one), but the window isn't shut yet and there's still hope.

Overall I don't think there's anything much squad-wise between us and Spurs, and Arsenal are weakish in a number of positions and if their poor injury-luck continues (touch wood for ours too) then they could be in trouble. City, United and Chelsea all have stronger squads on paper but all have new managers and quite a few personnel changes and considering all of those 5 clubs also have Euro matches to contend with, there may be an opportunity for us. Especially if Klopp continues to make progress with this team, as he had been doing up until the EL took priority last season.

Agreed, I think he's a terrific buy. The odd transfers in defence helps keep my expectation about you lot at bay. Thank feck!

I also think Mane is excellent, would have taken him here in a heartbeat.

Mane is a big transfer for them. Him, Coutinho and Firminho behind a fit Sturridge is a great attack. However, their entire back 4 bar Clyne is shite. Their keeper is shite and their midfield is OK.

I know it was only pre season but Mane tore Barca a new one on Saturday. He showed at Southampton that he's a big game player so hopefuly he can bring that over to us by getting a Brace against a depleted Arsenal team on Sunday :D.

Henry picks Mane as player to watch :

Mane will be a great signing for the scouse. Probably the only player from them I would consider having at United.

Meh. He's a solid player but it's not like he would improve you that much. I think you should look for better, if riskier, options.

Today was probably a microcosm of things to come. They will have one of the best attacks in the league, but will be vulnerable at the back.

Yup, I expect the same. I reckon they're going to absolutely hammer some teams, but if teams are bold and attack their defence they're vulnerable.

Wohoo! Haha! That's more like it! Title winners 2016!

Nah I'm only joking. Same ol same ol story at the back, maybe it's because it's just the start of the season I dunno. But that needs sorting.

Up front we look good when we can actually be bothered unlike the first half.

However you sugarcoat it, 3 points against top 4 challenger is a great result. Even with their bad defence Mignolet isn't going to be in goal much longer and there's time for them to replace Moreno.

They've got one game to focus on each week. Even with the goals they conceded they'll be gaining confidence.

They'll have plenty of fun games and that defence will also provide us with many moments of hilarity. They have a decent chance at top 4, but won't have the consistency to get us worried about them mounting a title challenge.

They were playing a Arsenal team who had two 20 year olds in defence and without several key players.

Yup.
Liverpool did great, their attack looked fantastic.
That goal by Mane was so good that it's one of the cases where the attacker makes the defenders look awful dogpoop.

They really need to work on that defense though...

Mane looks exciting. That was one hell of a goal.

We still have three defenders and Karius returning from injury, and Grujic as well, so maybe there'll be a bit more screening for the defence. I still want a LB and maybe a CM (today's trio was really lightweight), but definitely a LB.

Coutinho and Mane to thump Burnley away next week, boys? I think we'll do them away as well, Klavan and Lovren can take of Andre Gray and we'll be fine imo. Very very happy right now. Cracking match

That game was like a microcosm of much of last season. Delighted with the win but unless we massively improve our defending we won't make top 4.

The bookies will soon be offering odds on for Moreno to make a mistake directly leading to a goal. The guy is a nightmare.

All our goals were brilliant - we are devastating going forward, when we get it going. If nothing else I reckon we will provide plenty of entertainment this season.

Somewhere between 4th and 6th is my prediction. It's hard to really judge anyone this early but the defensive frailties will hold us back.

Nah, it might be our year lads ;), last time Mingolet saved a penalty on the first game of the season... But jokes aside Klopp needs to sign a LB now. That first half was a warning sign.

That defence is cagey as feck

And Mignolet being in goal only makes it worse for them. In LVG's first season we were very dodgy defensively at times but were lucky in that De Gea had the season of his life and carried us for much of it. A solid keepers can work wonders and mask a dodgy defence, but while Mignolet's in goal for Liverpool it's hard to see things improving for them in that regard.

Attended my first ever away game today (thanks again @ThierryHenry). What a fecking game!

Mignolet did nothing wrong today, fine penalty stop but I fully expect Karius to take his place when fit again. Clyne was solid as always. Very pleased with the performance of Klavan, he's not very good at playing out from the back and lacks pace but he makes up for it with good positioning and some excellent challenges.

Moreno though. Were to begin - he was awful, horrendous, abysmal. Can't even symphatize for the guy anymore, he simply has to be replaced. We still have time and NEED to sign a replacement asap.

The midfield was quiet in the first half and we lacked a deep lying playmaker who came to get the ball out of Klavan's feet. Wijnaldum did quite well but was too anonymous for most parts of the game. He'll come good and will be a useful player for us. Henderson was very good imo and Lallana also did well for his goal although he contributed too little as a CM for me.

Firmino isn't a deep striker and it showed today, we couldn't hold the ball up front and he lacks the movement of a true striker. Had some good actions and was threatening from time to time so that's a plus. Mane was absolutely brilliant, hated him at Soton but he's winning me around very quickly at this rate! Coutinho brilliant as well but didn't expect anything else from the little magician. I hope his injury isn't anything serious or was it just cramps? Was a bit early for that I thought.

Arsenal was a lot better in the first half, we were very lucky to go into HT at 1-1. A 15-minute spell after the break won us the game but it's so fecking typical Liverpool to switch off after important moments: first with the penalty were we never fully recovered the ball and we were lacklustre after the 1-4 as well, that needs to change so we can see games out a bit easier than these nerve-wrecking endings. Same story as the last few years really: a lot of goals and quality up front but defence looks suspicious although they didn't do much wrong today, except for that little prick at LB of course.. A win next week at Burnley would make for an excellent start to the season.

Have you just awoken from hibernation or a trip up the Amazon will not access to the internet for a couple of months ? We have signed the BL's #2 keeper (according to his peers) and the only reason he's not in goal is he broke his finger in pre-season.

Really ? Even with Chamberlain's goal ?

I know you've signed another keeper and I'm sure he will be a good addition. For the moment, though, Mignolet's obviously a bit of a problem.

Fair point, we don't rate Mignolet either and hopefully Karius is fit soon, but the bigger problem with that goal is what the 4 or 5 defenders were doing to stop the shot even coming in.

And a word on our first team defence for the multitude who seem to have forgotten - that wasn't it. I've absolutely no doubt that Karius will be in goal for the vast majority of this season - but Mignolet (who BTW was not at fault for any of those goals today ; Moreno, deflection, no-one - it was a world-class cross) is a pretty decent back-up.

Matip, and it's looking like Ragnar (solid as a rock in most of his outings for us so far), is looking more and more like Klopp's preferred CB pairing (when Matip recovers from injury) and both are quality headers of the ball so that should hopefully address one issue ... and the other is if course Moreno, who I didn't think could get any worse but he proved me wrong, surely Klopp will now see that that is a position which can not wait to be addressed and do some business before the end of the month. In 6 weeks time I don't think I'd be far off saying probably only Clyne (who had a superb match today) and Ragnar (also very good) of today's defence will be seen as first team selections.

Why have they not replaced Moreno?

He must have a dossier on Klopp or something because how he has not been sold yet is baffling, not that I think they'll be many clubs wanting him apart from a mediocre Spanish side.

Really ? Even with Chamberlain's goal ?
That was a world-class cross and there was a melee of players attacking it - he could have come (but that's a huge maybe) but he would have been unlikely to fight his way through them and even a slight dink would have sent it over him. I don't see many on the Liverpool forums blaming him for any of them - and they usually blame him for everything so that's a pretty good indicator.

Hope Coutinho can finally put together a consistent season.

It was a free kick - how could they have stopped it ?!

Just cramps I thought - and he was one of the last ones to return to training. Those cramps couldn't have come a less fortuitous time had it been planned, he would have been away and I'd have absolutely backed him to beat Cech and walk off with his hat trick. At 5-2 the match would have been over without the later shenanigans.

Chamberlains goal was deflected a bit I think - even if it wasn't I wouldn't blame Migs for it.
