Liverpool 2016/17 - Performance and chat thread.

I called it on Grujic, yonks back, :D. (the Fleetwood friendly). That he's now looking like a possible ballon D'or contender is no surprise to me.

Milner at LB though, :(.

It must be his build or something because he looks even bigger than he actually is.

Interesting post,

It seems to me that we struggle with teams like Leicester who play the long ball over the top with pacy players like Vardy. We're much more happier with teams who play the possession game and we can press them high up. Basically the top teams and we did quite well against them last year.

I've been looking at the two draws against spurs last season. Both pressing, high intensity teams. That seemed to me much more tactically conservative from both sides compared to games against other top opposition. Almost like both managers really respected each other or they just cancelled each other out.

How do you think utd will set up against pool this season?

I don't think there are many teams that can match Liverpool's pressing. It's consistent, everyone knows what they are doing and they know what to do with the ball when they get it back.

However like you said, most of the top teams try to play their own game and don't adjust to this sustained pressing, hopefully Mourinho is aware and stops us dithering with it at the back but a lot of teams won't realise until they are 1-0 or 2-0 down.

If teams play it a bit more direct (not necessarily long ball) and most importantly shift it around quicker then any team with this kind of pressing will naturally tire.

I suspect a lot of teams won't realise what hits them when they face Liverpool and the fact you don't have Europe gives you added rest between games which is perfect for your style of play.

Looking forward to seeing how mourinho sets you up. I get the impression he knows he can't do what he did with Chelsea second time round and park the bus. Think he will go for the more aggressive Chelsea he had first time round as I think he knows the fans won't stand for the Lvg type play. They want it the Utd way or at least something approaching that anyway.

Really strong mid with Pogba as the enforcer alongside Mkhitarayn. Ibra will score the goals no problem.

Thats a bloody strong team.

He wouldn't have started anyway as he barely played in pre season. Origi is good enough to lead the line, but let's not praise him too much on here or we will be accused of being deluded scousers as per usual

feck what people on here will say, Origi is the real deal.

I think Grujić is going to take the league by storm. 20 and 6ft 3" tall.

Liverpool will start the season really well due to their superior fitness. They've played a million friendlies.

Watch them burnout after Christmas and suffer an injury crisis at some point.

I am wondering if we did that due to no europe. Get an edge to begin with.

Klopp has organised a very good squad, with lots of quality and cover in all positions.

Without the distraction of Europe he should do really well in the league and domestic cups - his season should be considered as a failure if he doesn't get to at least one final and get a top 3 position.

His only problem will be if he gets knocked out of any cups in the early rounds as he may run out of games to keep all his players happy.

But I hope teams wise up to his pressing style though I suspect most won't realise until it's too late. Barcelona played into their trap by pissing around with the ball at the back and were picked off with ease.

If teams figure out to combat it then I expect Klopp's teams to tire themselves out in games. But if teams continue to play at a pedestrian pace and take an age in getting the ball in front of their midfield then Liverpool will pressurise these teams in to making mistakes.

I think you underestimate the other coaches in the PL. Most will have a plan to counter Klopps press but it remains to be seen how successful these plans will be.
I certainly don't see Pep, Mou, Pochettino, Koeman & Wenger being caught unaware.
Barca were clearly underdone yesterday and just tried to play their normal game. Liverpool looked good but looks in preseason are often deceptive.

I don't rate Koeman tactically, but agree with your point nonetheless.

Hmm, it seems the peak has come a little later than normal this year..

I actually kind of agree. He does seem to have the talent; some of his performances last year were really promising. You have so many different players, who can lead the lines, that should be the least of your concern.

Yeah, clearly he's still far from the finished article but he looks a lot more likely to make it here than he did under Rodgers.

He's a lot better physically now which I think is the biggest difference, he doesn't get bullied by defenders any more.

Good to see Sturridge's injury woes continue. Now that the Euro's are over, I have no reason to root for Sturridge. Long may his perennial injury problems continue.

On a side note, it seems Liverpool have far too many attacking players of a decent level (who would demand gametime). They failed abymally to get into Europa League too, so it doesn't look like Flopp will be able to give all of them enough gametime. Cup games with PL rotation wont satisfy all of them so it will be interesting to see the team spirit mid-season.

They look to have too many players of a decent level and too few of genuine quality so I can't see them finishing in Top 4 unless Flopp helps them to become FAR greater than the sum of their parts.

I can't see them finishing above 5th. 6th would be my prediction though.

Yep I would expect teams to come up with a plan against us to nullify the pressing - but in some cases (especially the top teams) that will mean compromising their game to an extent. Pep and Wenger for example, love to play out from the back - if they do that against us it will play into our hands. If they don't they will not be playing to their strengths. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

With posters like you around this will be a fun thread no doubt.

It will indeed. Especially when the Boom Bust Cycle is in its latter stages.

My first sentence states that I am glad to see Sturridge's injury problems continue, whilst the third one wishes further injury problems on him. They are separate points and there is nothing wrong with having them in the same paragraph.

It's ironic how you try to hint at this in a condescending manner when you lack a basic understanding of punctuation.

Wishing injuries on players is tasteless tbf.

Only condescending person is you: Johnny is pointing out how much ill-will you pack within your post.

I think you're right. With some hard work and application he'll certainly nail down that 'third best Belgian striker' slot.

Good to see you're still a clown.

What was that again...Chelsea played the best football in England in years in 14/15?

Yep, something most pundits were saying at the time during that first half of the season when no-one came even close to touching us.

Most pundits are clowns too, you're in good company I guess.

Liverpool's quickness could be the reason they might have a great season. Mane just puts them over the top IMO. Great acquisition. Their quickness both in defense and on offense is what made Barca look sort of lost. Not many teams can do that. I watched the Barca vs Leicester match and Barca looked like a great team getting ready for the season.

Of course. If there's one thing scousers have never been short of, its delusional overconfidence.

Don't think we've ever reached "Willian is amazing" levels of delusion in fairness.

Mainz are giving us a game, currently 1-0 to them following a penalty due to handball by Wisdom.

Willian is pretty amazing tbf. Rarely gives you a 10/10 performance, but he's guaranteed to give you an 8/10 almost every game. I'd love him at Liverpool.

Getting stuffed by Mainz now 3-0. Proof that yesterday's result means nothing just like all the other pre season games.

He could be decent, but all he's had so far is a purple patch before his injury. Hasn't really done it for long enough to be called either way, I don't think.

I'm surprised you are playing 2 matches within 24hrs. Mainz is a better team than most on this forum would give them credit for, btw.

Pep has faced Klopps press many times. Can't say I'm too worried ;-)

Origi is an odd one - He doesn't strike me as a natural goalscorer nor with an abundance of technique. Yet he has shown he has both under klopp. Coaching?

If he can keep going, his combination of speed, strength and movement is going to be lethal.
