Liverpool 2016/17 - Performance and chat thread.

Sakho has been sent home from the US tour to continue rehab in Liverpool. The Echo are saying Klopp isn't happy with his attitude...

Should have kept Kolo another season.

Loan move announced by Hertha. A good move for the youngster and another big step in his career. Klopp is very excited about him.

That's not yet a loan move announced, but a week long trial training as I understand. Will probably end up being a loan but, you know, to be precise.. :D

Whilst Melissa Reddy writes:

It is also telling that it was not the medical team who suggested Sakho return to Liverpool, but a directive from Klopp.
There have been no indicators of a fallout of any sort, but a suggestion exists that the 26-year-old has not been as diligent as his team-mates.

Who knows.

Conte on Liverpool :

"Liverpool are one of the best teams in the League and I’m sure can fight to win the title.

Jurgen Klopp worked already for nine months with this team and it’s very important for him and Liverpool to understand each other. “It’s important to work and have the time to transfer your methods and ideas of football.

It’s very difficult to go in during the season when a manager was sacked. It’s not easy. You must transfer your ideas in a bit of time and it’s difficult.

But last season was very important for Klopp and the players. The players know Klopp and he knows the players. It’s important to transfer your idea of football and to have the identity of the player.[...]

Liverpool are one of seven or eight teams that can fight at the end to win the title. I’m sure of this. Liverpool have a good team, good manager, good football, high intensity, good organisation."”

Lucas & Balotelli on their way to Turkey it seems (perhaps in Balo's case) :

Galatasaray manager Jan Olde Riekerink has urged the club to push through the transfer of Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva according the AMK.
Per the source, Riekerink sent a report to the board underlining his position on the transfer efforts and gave the transfer committee his full backing in pursuing the Brazilian midfielder.

Galatasaray are reported to have offered Lucas a deal worth €2.5 million per-season and Liverpool are understood to have given the midfielder the green light to leave.
Lucas is currently out injured for a month after picking up a hamstring strain but that has not put Galatasaray off trying to sign the 29-year-old.

The experienced midfielder would end a nine-year spell at the club if he were to part ways over the summer. Lucas has been closely linked with a move to Turkey in the past and almost joined Besiktas on loan last season until Brendan Rodgers blocked the move.
-------------

Besiktas president Fikret Orman claims the Turkish club are keen to sign Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli.

Orman believes the 25-year-old, who did not travel with the Reds for their tour of the United States after being deemed surplus to requirements, could be a good fit for the Istanbul side.

And Orman concedes had it not been for Balotelli's reputation for being difficult Besiktas would not stand a chance of attracting the Italy international.

"Mario Balotelli is the type of footballer that our fans can associate themselves with," Orman said. "I'm pretty sure he would attract great attention.

"To be fair, if he wasn't deemed as a trouble-maker, he wouldn't be rumoured to be joining us.

"But we can show some effort and create solutions for Balotelli's infamous troubles. I think he can change with the attention and care he'll receive in Turkey.

"In short, we want Mario Balotelli and he wants us too."

Good luck with that. A turkey playing in Turkey eh. Who'd have thought ?

Rumour is Besiktas want him on loan and prefer us to pay part of his salary also - jeez we messed up big time on that one.

Klopp just confirmed Sakho was sent home for disciplinary reasons - nearly missing the plane over, missing a team meal and skipping a train session.

Says it's not that serious though.

I'm really interested in how they'll look attack wise this season. I assume it's going to be Sturridge; Coutinho, Firmino and Mané. I think they'll take the league by storm at the beginning but begin to wear out around 2/3s of the way through. I think, if they can all stay fit, they've got the potential to be the most deadly attack in the league. I hope I'm wrong but I think they'll suit Klopp's style to a tee.

I'm also curious to see how Matip does. Whenever I watched Schalke, which wasn't that much, he was a bit suspect defensively but a nice ball player.

Still remember when Tommo said on Soccer Saturday that it was a bargain, world class player for (cant remember what amount exactly).

Didn't Sakho get a new (much higher) number this season too? Not important in isolation but with the rest that's not a good sign. The offences/fallout may have not been that serious but he might be the one making way for Matip in the first team. Obviously he'll be training but 'Pool aren't back until August, that's a lot of preseason to be spending solo or with reserves if the manager considers you a starting player.

I wouldn't trust whoever else is on the left if Moreno is still about, Sakho (pre injury and return feck-up or drug stuff) did well covering for him and brought better out of Lovren too. Matip/Lovren seem similar - better in the air but a bit worse than Sakho in most other areas, don't think Matip is a left footer either which may or may not make a difference (makes a huge one if you're a dutch madman)/

I think Matip is going to play RCB whenever he plays. The other 4 can all play LCB though Lovren would prefer to be on the right.

Sakho is injured, I think he was supposedly out for at least a month so he won't be doing much in the way of heavy fitness work / training matches until passed fit. There's no way he'll start the season unless he makes a miraculous recovery, both in fitness and Klopp's good book.

Yes he got given the number 3. He won't start the season anyway as he is injured, Matip will I think.

Moreno isn't good enough, really hope we get someone else in to replace him, I am just a bit worried Klopp is going to persist with him.

Marko Grujic has gone to hospital for a scan after suffering suspected concussion v Chelsea in a clash of heads with Traore.

Klopp: Grujic injury doesnt look good. He cant remember anything.

Good symptom to have if you play for pool.

Didn't see the game but Fabregas was sent off late in the game for a terrible challenge on Klavan, sounds like we had all the possession and they scored and settled for a 1-0. Chelsea under Conte will be interesting.

More worrying apparently Moreno was awful!

If you show behaviour like Sakho, Klopp shows no merci with you. The atmosphere of respect and working is most important for his system to work. If someone means he can disturb and dont hear, it could be very quick that Klopp sorts him out, and the way back from this is more difficult, normaly Klopp doesnt turn around from such decisions.

Sakho is also the doped guy, isnt he? If yes, thats another point for Klopp to get rid of him. Doesnt got time for such things.

I saw the first few minutes to just after the goal. Obviously my weary eyes were totally focussed on impartially monitoring the raw but enthusiastic Spanish LB/WB you appear to be stuck with that we all love.

Moreno was off to a flying start when he welcomed his new mate Klavan to the team by dropping him right in the poo with a way-short hospital pass, Albie was then immediately booked for a comedy-horrific lunge to bring down an escaping Willian - ''he doesn't want to run after him in a friendly'' says the co-comms who also contributed the thought that Moreno was not helping that side of the defence by looking to get forward too early & being out of position as a result. We'd been going about 2 minutes at this point. Moreno responded to this criticism by passing the ball straight out of play the next time he got it. Then they showed a close-up of Albie's terrible new hairstyle & I had to pack it in. He was really bad honestly, but the hair is worse I think, just about.

First game in 2 weeks is it?

Still early in the preparation, and loads of transfer window left yet.

ECHO
A bit of a nightmare 82 minutes for the Spaniard. He was shown a yellow card early on for a rash challenge on Willian and generally used the ball poorly.

I hear Ragnar can also play LB !!

Klopp has apparently said that he seriously doubts Pool will make any further signings.

If true, good luck next season. They will need bucket loads of the stuff.

I'll be miffed if we don't sign a LB. We only have one. In fact, after loaning Flanagan, we only have one RB too.

It may make good negotiating sense to say such things however we obviously want a new left back or we would have kept Smith as back up and not sold him to Bournemouth. I'm extremely confident we will have a new LB before the end of the transfer window.

Me too, after shipping out Flanagan and Smith there's no way we won't sign a LB this summer. In a way I'm glad Moreno was horrible (who would've thought?) because it might show Klopp once again we really need someone new there.

I agree completely but am less sure we will get someone in, despite Smith's departure it is clear Klopp for whatever reason wanted Chilwell.
Given his lack of experience that suggests to me Smith out and Chilwell in, as back up to Moreno.

I really hope we get someone better in though as he is a liability.

Chilwell has signed a contract extension with Leicester. We need another LB asap how can they not have made this a priority? It's Ridiculous to rely on Moreno going into the season. Anyone who saw his pre season performance yesterday will tell you he's not up to the job. I know its only pre season but we all know it will continue into the new season.

There is no luck with Serbs and Liverpool there must be always something to make things harder. Dont want to sound biased and players like Jovanovic (he signed for Rafa, joined after Rafa left and he is big cnut(non Liverpool related),Markovic had very good season in Benfica, that genius Rodgers played him as wing back and wouldnt be surprised if something happens to hinders Grujic career in Liverpool.

Anyway, early days but how Grujic looked so far?

Impressive. Very strong, good skills, Lampardesque in his timing of runs into the box. A good finisher, he'll score a few goals.

Pool fans - is Coutinho fit to start the season? Thinking of having him in my fantasy squad while Ozil gets up to fitness.

He needs more games as he is clearly not firing at anywhere near 100% yet, he did come back late due to Copa America commitments though. I've no doubt Klopp will have him ready in time for the start of the season. This potentially could be a good season for him as with with the likes of Sturridge, Mane, Firmino, Origi and Wijnaldum ahead of him he could get a lot more space to work in and at the same time have fast and intelligent runners in front of him. We look on paper to have an exceptional forward line and if the midfield does well enough then Coutinho will have a good season.

He made a very good start against inferior opposition and Ruffian's description above is accurate. However he didn't look on his game against Chelsea, whether that is indicative of his current level, that he had an off day or whether it just shows how much growing & maturing he has left to do (he is very young of course) only time will tell. It's a pity he is going to miss a match (vs Milan) due to his concussion as we want to see him play against these better teams to see how he copes.
