Liverpool 2016/17 - Performance and chat thread.

Your son in law (to be) is (obviously) young and excited to see his manager signing new players to replace proven crap. He's overrating Karius and comparing him to De Gea just as....you lot were when you signed De Gea from Spain. Before De Gea came most Utd fans had hardly heard of him, other than reports that he was up and coming in Spain. We all chuckled when you heralded him to be the new king. Now your son in law has heard about Karius' high praise in Germany and is doing the same. Hindsight chucling vs foresight chuckling and all that.

Anyway, we don't know if Karius is special yet. No one is special in the PL until they've proven themselves to be. Us 'Pool fans are just happy we've addressed the goalie issue, whether we've addressed it poorly or brilliantly remains to be seen.
Nonsense. De Gea was linked with United well before the end of his last season with Atletico so the uninformed had plenty of chances to watch him.
He had a famous match where he kept out Real time and time again. Came out on top in a personal duel with Ronaldo.
That's why our fanbase were dumbfounded when DDG kept getting shit on duringr his first few seasons at United..

Aye, I noticed that. Or rather, I didn't notice it at the time, but it's something people keep bringing up as an argument in his favour. Which it is - I suppose. But I presume Klopp knows this player very well, so he won't have brought him in on the basis of his performance in those matches.

He seems like a solid enough, albeit completely unspectacular, defender. The comment you quoted is interesting indeed. Unless he's simply talking him up because people have already questioned the signing, it would seem he considers Ragnar as something beyond a mere backup option.

Perhaps it's a genius move - it better be, though, to put it like that, if he intends to use him as a regular starter.

Also, as mentioned in the RAWK thread - Ragnar is an old LVG signing, from his AZ days.

He looks pretty decent from the small amount I've seen. I thought he'd just be a big lump at first but he can bring the ball out from the back and has a good forward pass. Pretty nippy for a CB too. Reminds me a bit of Daniel Agger.

I expected him to be a backup but Klopp said something along the lines of 'wait until you see him play and then decide if he'll be a mere squad option' which suggests that he could maybe find his way into the starting 11.

They certainly seem to be at least one step up but probably more. Proof of the pudding though ........ I do like that they came from the BL and not, for example, France or maybe Eastern Europe, gives me more confidence.
What's wrong with players coming from the French league? The last few imports have not done half bad. Mahrez, Payet, Martial, Kante to name a few.

the top knot has to be some sort of crime against the public welfare. It's simply indecent.
Just be thankful he hasn't gone bleach blonde with it. :nervous:

What has the world come to?

You're taking hair styles guys :) Keane/souness would kick the bejesus out of them

Joe Allen has completed a permanent transfer to Stoke. A bit sad to see him go as I think he could definitely do a job as a backup CM option after his good second half of last season, but can understand why he's gone. I wish him all the best at Stoke, he definitely improves their starting XI imo.

I really hope the Jetro Willems rumours are false because he isn't even an upgrade on Moreno. They started after Willems said to Wijnaldum on Twitter that "they'll see each other soon enough" so hopefully they're based on absolutely nothing.

Struggling to see Liverpool get any defined quality in the transfers.

I think players like Hamsik are a good pick for Liverpool but Napoli are already losing players.

It's difficult because now it's not top 4, it's top 6.

What are the plans with Balotelli? I saw that he's been banned from training with seniors.

Him and Klopp have basically agreed that he needs to find a new club. He's said he wasn't happy at Liverpool + Klopp doesn't want him. It's sad how his career is going, just earlier I saw the picture he posted with the Liverpool reserves, mind you he's on £90k a week and has a net worth of around £30 million pounds last time i checked .

I wonder who will take him. He's completely crap plus he off the pitch stuff. How the mighty have fallen. He was a big , supposed to be hugely talented, never saw that much of a talent tbh.

He has shown real talent in flashes thru the years but never consistently - couple that with a poor lazy attitude and you get a player who will never fulfil his potential. We'll struggle to sell him for anything near what we paid - an Italian club might take him on loan. Everyone knows that its impossible to keep him focused on performing. Barring a major psychological change, he will stay unpredictable and probably float around a few more clubs before finally retiring and thinking what might have been.

Willems : A Dutch guy on another forum said there had been absolutely ZERO in the NL media/papers, except one bit quoting an English paper ! Smoke, no fire we hope.

Allen : Always had a soft spot for him but probably this brilliant assessment from another poster on another forum sums him up best : always talked up as being some kind of "thinking man's footballer" and proof that they see beyond his size, stature and lack of pace, can ignore the fact he managed 'zero' assists in the Premiership after three seasons, an average of less than two goals a season in all competitions, a mediocre long-passing range, and no ability to beat a man.

He's a player for the connoisseur. Like Xavi, Iniesta and Pirlo. So much of his fantastic work goes unnoticed by the usual Cro-Magnon knuckledraggers who like speed, goals, sublime skill and an ability to win a game or at least dominate a midfield.

That should be amended to "we'll struggle to give him away'. I'm sure we'll end up paying off his contract or making a massive contribution to his salary at another club, just to get him off the books.

Wiljnaldum is a good player. I think their attack will do well. Lots of running power there with Mane, Countinho, Origi, Wijnaldum, Sturridge and Firmino. Okay Sturridge running might be a bit of a stretch, but there's enough there for Klopp to make work well with his quick transition system. It's the defence and midfield that I think is suspect.

Sakho has been sent home from the US tour to continue rehab in Liverpool. The Echo are saying Klopp isn't happy with his attitude...

Brad Smith on his way home to complete move to Bournemouth, we really are having a clear out.

We're losing CBs really quick at this rate. Are we going to sign another 30+ year old CB for another £5m?

It's got to be very very frustrating for him. UEFA's mishandling of his case meant he lost out on France's Euros and the EL final. And then he gets injured just when he's looking to put it all behind him. Tough year.

Don't know if this has legs or not?

This guy is highly rated. He's been linked with both United and Chelsea this window. However I don't know why we would be after him - we have more than enough #10s / CMs / RMs. Played in every match for Portugal at the Euros. Though there is a theory that he may be a replacement for Allen. Don't see it myself, a defensive minded distributer (e.g. Dahoud) and a LB is where all the money should be going now.

Maybe he was plan A/B and Wijnaldum was a backup option?

Could be wrong but looks to me that Klopp is building a team he knows will score goals because finding quality defenders is difficult and he knows this team will concede.

Brilliant assessment alright!

Possibly right. I think Liverpool will be a fun team to watch next season. Very direct, lots of runners but at risk when they lose the ball high up the pitch. However, he clearly sets his teams up to turnover possession in the opposition's half so I think he regards that high press as a chief defensive tactic.

Half bingo. Although I agree with your general comment, building a team that scores goals should be mutually exclusive to how good the defence is. For any manager, even defensive ones (e.g. look at Mourinho with Drogba and then Costa at Chelsea or Ranieri with Mahrez and Vardy).

Klopp is addressing (on paper for now anyway) 5 years of absolute dross performances in front of goal - barring that one season. Sadly, those 5 years of missing dozens of clear cut chances or predictable approach play became the 'acceptable level' at Liverpool with the added salt-on-injury of spending 10s of millions to maintain that level. Our defence has irked me in the past no doubt but nothing has quite cut painfully through my soul as witnessing Coutinho run out of ideas for the umpteenth time and hit 35 yard wasters. Or Sterling missing 4 one-on-ones against De Gea....in one game! :(

We need goals. Not because of our defence. We just need goals.

Loan move announced by Hertha. A good move for the youngster and another big step in his career. Klopp is very excited about him.
