I don't keep a diary, but he's had several good games for us this season. He's lacking consistency though, like the rest of the team. Our players (and as a team) seem to go from one extreme (looking pretty good at times) to the other (looking incomprehensibly shite). This isn't a new thing for us though, and probably suggests some issues with culture and mentality.
Good defensive games or offensive ones because that’s the distinction with him these days; in his first season he was mostly snuffing out attacks and then initialising attacks and being lauded for it, but these days he gets praise for bits and pieces - sporadic actions within the 90, usually a great pass, but very rarely something we can bank on at the back. He’s gone from a leader back there to someone we’re relieved when he gets through two halves without making a goal-costing mistake.

Personally, I think the injury has really messed with him, physically and mentally and all the shite we’re going through as a club is exacerbating and compounding everything for him.

He’s getting a lot of criticism and rightfully so BUT I think Maguire was also to blame for that first goal. He goes towards the ball on the cross for some unknown reason and leaves Isak to Martinez despite having the better angle to clear it. Everyone forgets how bad Maguire is after just a few “decent” appearances.

Regardless of what Maguire does or doesn't do, the covering defender has got to pick up the free man. He can't just see Isak left unmarked right in front of goal and think "not my problem"!

Lisandro has declined to Daley Blind , so his current only logical placement would be at LWB position.

btw, Dalot have not ever performed one good game at LWB position. It's just worth trying Lisandro there and nothing to lose.

Blind's reading of the game is far, far beyond Martinez'. He may have been a little slow and weak, but outside of that, he was a really good player all round who often used his superior mind and reading of the game to get the better of forwards much bigger and faster than he was.

You can't decline to a player that is overall better than you...

Martinez can barely run. He would add nothing to the attack and defence

When looking at his first season, I think he was also largely helped by playing next to Varane who was still class and healthy for most of that year.

Blind was far better than him.

Shaw on the outside, Varane on the inside and better midfield than we have now; a lot more help, but he’s far from himself as he was also far better.

I‘m a fan of Martinez, but dropping him would be understandable given his form. I have a feeling it might do more harm than good though.

It’s a bit like Silvestre could actually look half decent when he played next to Rio but turned quite bad when Rio was out and he had to play next to Brown (who also looked much better in a settled defense).

Striker Lisandro Martinez was not on my bingo card for this year.

It's time.

One bad moment early on but superb for most of the match and a fabulous goal.

Tackles, interceptions, blocks, good timing in stepping into midfield and breaking up play, thunderbolt of a goal. Man of the match.

Not bad for a midget who can't run and is far worse than Daley Blind etc etc.

Good match in general, hope this burst his confidence. Interesting he’s done well in both important matches.

Not only the goal but a great ball for rasmus in the first half as well.

That was a huge step in the right direction for him. Great all-round performance. What a fecking amazing finish, too!

His goal was eerily similar to the famous Giggs vs Arsenal FA Cup Semi Replay. Alisson even motioned like Seaman trying to save it.

He’s going one of the centre halfs who steps into midfield when we’re on the front foot and try to act as an additional midfielder and with his ball skills, a bit of a deep lying playmaker.

That shot is what I would have liked Hojlund to have attempted in the first half. Great strike.

His best game in a long long time. Was absolutely wonderful. I hope he can find more consistency in the future.

The best thing its that he played with anticipation and mean character, tired or relax Licha it's not a good mix.
Today he could have make a mistake, like any player does, but it's this type of determination, anticipation, agressive mode what it's needed.

PD: he must arrive more to the rival's area, he has a great shot in him, not just pasess or dribbles, he almost scored some golazo on prior ocassions, he should do it a lot more, let's unlock his inner Passarella
PD2: I was insulting Bruno for not giving him the ball earlier, yet he made it even more of a beauty with the final ball by him.
PD3: he steps up like his usual self in big matches, finals, or classics, that should be an extra, not like more recently the norm.

He put in a top performance. Defending aggressively from the front created the chance that he scored from with a fantastic strike. Our best ball player from the back and he's someone that we need on form.

Was fantastic. His attacking contribution in this new system has been pretty evident , hopefully we’ll see more defensive performances like today as well.

Excellent.

Now can he follow it up with another good game because that's been his problem this season.

I know he has been patchy this season, but i have alot of time for players who give their all, plus his passing ability is top notch so he never frustrates you with stupid or wayward passes. Hope to see the old Licha back soon with his aggressive front foot defending.

Excellent today and an outstanding goal.

I'll be brutally honest though, I'm not going to get over excited about it yet. I remember he was excellent in the Etihad too and even set up Amad's winner, and then proceeded to put in very poor performances in the following couple of games, costing us several goals in the process.

If he can replicate today's performance for the next 2 or 3 months, he'll have gone a long way to earning back the fans' trust. But my fear for him is that his lack of height, lack of pace and occasional defensive lapses are still going to be a liability for us in the long run.

He was immense today, timed all of his tackles well, passed well and kept the shape. Brilliant finish too. Let’s see some consistency now and people like me will shut up as I’ve been a critic of him this season
