I don't keep a diary, but he's had several good games for us this season. He's lacking consistency though, like the rest of the team. Our players (and as a team) seem to go from one extreme (looking pretty good at times) to the other (looking incomprehensibly shite). This isn't a new thing for us though, and probably suggests some issues with culture and mentality.
Good defensive games or offensive ones because that’s the distinction with him these days; in his first season he was mostly snuffing out attacks and then initialising attacks and being lauded for it, but these days he gets praise for bits and pieces - sporadic actions within the 90, usually a great pass, but very rarely something we can bank on at the back. He’s gone from a leader back there to someone we’re relieved when he gets through two halves without making a goal-costing mistake.

Personally, I think the injury has really messed with him, physically and mentally and all the shite we’re going through as a club is exacerbating and compounding everything for him.

He’s getting a lot of criticism and rightfully so BUT I think Maguire was also to blame for that first goal. He goes towards the ball on the cross for some unknown reason and leaves Isak to Martinez despite having the better angle to clear it. Everyone forgets how bad Maguire is after just a few “decent” appearances.

Regardless of what Maguire does or doesn't do, the covering defender has got to pick up the free man. He can't just see Isak left unmarked right in front of goal and think "not my problem"!

Lisandro has declined to Daley Blind , so his current only logical placement would be at LWB position.

btw, Dalot have not ever performed one good game at LWB position. It's just worth trying Lisandro there and nothing to lose.

Blind's reading of the game is far, far beyond Martinez'. He may have been a little slow and weak, but outside of that, he was a really good player all round who often used his superior mind and reading of the game to get the better of forwards much bigger and faster than he was.

You can't decline to a player that is overall better than you...

Martinez can barely run. He would add nothing to the attack and defence

When looking at his first season, I think he was also largely helped by playing next to Varane who was still class and healthy for most of that year.

Blind was far better than him.

Shaw on the outside, Varane on the inside and better midfield than we have now; a lot more help, but he’s far from himself as he was also far better.

I‘m a fan of Martinez, but dropping him would be understandable given his form. I have a feeling it might do more harm than good though.

It’s a bit like Silvestre could actually look half decent when he played next to Rio but turned quite bad when Rio was out and he had to play next to Brown (who also looked much better in a settled defense).
