You're probably watching the Dortmund v Leverkusen match over on BT. The Arsenal match is on Sky Sports 1.

Yes that is the game i have on, i just cannot recall anything good he's done this game to warrant the sudden boost of posts today, i don't even recall Martin Tyler saying his name "McCarthy" therefore forgot he was on the pitch.

He's not touched the ball yet first 8 mins of the 2nd half.

I was taking the piss. He has had a good game, though. McCarthy isn't the kind of player to 'catch the eye' as-per-se, but he is a very good player.

He declared and plays for Ireland, so not British and seen as another foreign player.

He's not a foreign player. You don't stop being British just because you opt to play for a non-British national team due to the Grandparent rule. He was born and raised in Glasgow, and came through Hamilton Accies academy. He's a British citizen, and considered a home grown player by the Premier League.

He even said he would have opted to play for Scotland had they called him up, but Ireland called him up first.

He isn't worth what Everton would demand now.

Should have signed him last summer. Though there would have been a moanfest probably of we did.

He's tidy and high energy and better than what we have.

But he's not that good. Looks great in this system where there's not much pressure on him to create or pass intricately.

I'd rather we set our sights higher.

Yes but he's still seen as a foreign player under the rules because he declared for Ireland...

Well just been watching him closey for the last 10mins, he's touched the ball 4 times.

Did 2 Tom Cleverley crab passes, attempted 1 mid-range pass which he miss hit and almost went to an Arsenal player putting his team in danger and the other an unchallenged overhead kick in his own box which went to an Arsenal player.

Jesus...we need a world class CM and folk are on about McCarthy...fecking mental.

He'd cost the best part of 25 million as well

Most people are just saying how good he's been or become, and how we've missed out.

10 minutes of a game when Everton have decided to shut up shop is hardly a good indication of his performance. He's been all over the pitch, providing loads of energy and made a few good interceptions. Not his best game but still did well against one of the better teams and midfields in the league.

Agreed, and it was his first half performance that was highlighted anyway.

The last thing I'm going to say on this is people go on about English over-hyping players, if this thread is anything to go by from Irish folk, England don't hype players enough.

More than that probably.

Our real point is that many of us were saying we should have gone for him last summer. If we had he'd have been a steal. Instead we went for the other guy.

Is he that much of an upgrade to Cleverley? Granted, im talking about a confident Cleverley..not the shell of the person he once was.

Ah I see. I am certainly not saying McCarthy isn't a good player. I think he is. I think he will get better as well. He's not quite what we need right now for the money he would cost but yes...I'd have had him over Fellaini any day of the week.

McCarthy would be a decent buy? Obviously not 'world class' or as good of a signing as Khedira but still a good buy. I'd be extremely happy if we finished this window with say Di Maria, McCarthy and another defender.

Confident Cleverley didn't offer much different to what the impostor of a footballer in a United shirt with his name on the back does now.

Under what rules? The Premier League has him as a home-grown player. You don't have to be English or British to be homegrown. Not sure how he is homegrown anyway as I'm fairly sure coming through the Scottish football system doesn't qualify you for the homegrown status and he didn't play for Wigan for 3 years before he was 21.

Great player though and some will just never give him the credit he deserves. Loads of people are happy to throw around 10m on Lucas Silva who they know absolutely nothing about but were going batshit crazy with the suggestion of James McCarthy for 13m last year. Evidently don't know anything about McCarthy either. McCarthy and Schneiderlin would be great signings for any team in the PL imo.

I just found this...fair enough my bad, but Irish players were definitely considered foreign but maybe that was before the Bosman! Anyway who cares.. it's went off topic!**Edit starting to become confused as Coleman is considered foreign just looked it up

List of foreign Premier League players
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of foreign players in the Premier League, which commenced play in 1992. The following players must meet both of the following two criteria:

  1. Have played at least one Premier League game. Players who were signed by Premier League clubs, but only played in lower league, cup and/or European games, or did not play in any competitive games at all, are not included.
  2. Are considered foreign, i.e., outside the United Kingdom, or Ireland determined by the following:
A player is considered foreign if he is not eligible to play for the national teams of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.

Does this make Fletcher a foreign player for us? I don't think so.
ok ok I got confused I know he was born in Scotland I thought as soon as you declared for Ireland you were considered Irish therefore foreign, keep your shirt on. While we are on topic Fletcher plays for Scotland not Ireland! So what do you mean?

It doesn't matter. I was trying to make the point above my post that if you are from the British Isles, you ARE considered homegrown, whether you are from England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland.

Don't think the Irish are unless they have been at their clubs before they turned 21 It's all here..http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/10287657/Premier-League-squads-in-full-how-many-foreign-players-in-your-team.html They have players like Coleman and Hoolahan listed as foreign which is why this whole conversation has became confusing I thought the same applied when someone declared for the Republic which I was wrong about. But I knew Fletcher was homegrown which is why I asked.

Welbeck and 10m should do it

Jesus, what planet are some people on? Welbeck is a miles better player than McCarthy and, as a forward, is significantly more valuable anyway.

I don't think so. To be considered homegrown you have to play for an FA club for 3 years before the age of 21. A lot of Irish players move to England early so qualify. Someone who moves older like Coleman does not. Coming through a Scottish club doesn't qualify you either so the likes of Naismith, Allan McGregor, and Alan Hutton aren't homegrown players.

Quote from the PL site
All 20 Clubs must include eight Home Grown players out of a squad of 25 for that Premier League season.

A Home Grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).
