James McCarthy

We should have signed him last summer. Why Moyes decided to sign Fellaini for far more money instead baffles me. Idiot.

We could have signed him and Strootman for just over what we paid for Fellaini.

The decision for Moyes not to buy Strootman was absolutely stupid. He had scouted him and knew how good he was.

And he had McCarthy. He must have seen. I just don't know.

I was at Goodison on Saturday for the Arsenal game and thought he was very good. Covers ground quickly and went around putting out fires all day.

Moyes made an absolutel mess of things that will take time to fix

Fellaini and renewing Nani were his first bizarre decisions....then I don't think Mata fit's in as Utd player too....Then we lost Vidic due to Moyes also.....Well done Dave

You can say that about a lot of midfielders though. Strootman or Schneiderlin wouldn't have been bad either. Or while Ferguson was still in charge, we let other midfielders slip through our fingers as well, it's an ongoing problem really.

Not fair to blame Moyes for not signing McCarthy since you guys would have rioted if we signed him last summer. Most of you rated Felliaini over McCarthy.

I would have been delighted if we'd signed him last year. I still think he's exactly the right sort of midfielder we need as well. Very underrated player, the same way Carrick was at a point.

At the time I was one of the few Newbies who thought he would be a good signing. But, generally people here would have been pissed if we signed him last summer.

I was always a big fan of him. I started the first thread about him (https://www.redcafe.net/threads/james-mccarthy.288264/). But I was very disappointed with him towards the end of the season with Wigan. He went missing in a lot of games I saw, and he was not looking good enough for United. But he's looked really good at Everton.

That would have changed when they saw him play for us though. He would have walked into our midfield last year and still would, even with Herrera here now.

We need someone to do the dirty work in midfield and he's perfect for it. It really is a shame that his pricetag is so high now.

Irish forumer in bumping James McCarthy thread shocker.

This madness has to stop, he's not good enough.

Right. So you're judging him on 45 minutes against Arsenal.

No I'm judging him from all the times I've seen him play, he may step up from Cleverley and Fletcher, let's be right though, it's not that much of a step up and not a big enough step up for Manchester United's requirements, especially for the £20m+ he would cost.

Apparently he played fantastic though yesterday, well if that's him playing fantastic, it just proves my point.

So explain to me. You didn't explain. You showed me posts of your opinion of him on 45 minutes. Tell me why he isn't good enough?

If you don't rate him that's fair enough, a lot of people do and nobody is saying he is worldclass, why are you so angry about a few fans appreciating McCarthy?

I'm not angry, I'm just not on the bandwagon, a bandwagon that is small just mainly just from one country anyway, when I'm not a fan of something or someone, i try and do it in a respectful way and give my reasons why i think what i do, just as i did yesterday as the game was happening.

No offense but you aren't doing a great job of defending your argument.

You've still not explained.

Is he that much of an upgrade to Cleverley? Granted, im talking about a confident Cleverley..not the shell of the person he once was.

Defensively yes. Offensively? Maybe the same.

Physically? Yes definitely. Technically? Maybe the same.

Most importantly, he's a consistantly good performer who does his job for the team at least 7/10 pretty much every match

Cleverley is consistantly average with at most 6/10 pretty much every single match

Carragher praising him and highlighting him

If you think it's just Irish fans praising McCarthy then you really haven't been paying attention to his career thus far. He's been consistently praised over the last few seasons by anyone who has watched him regularly.
I'd also point out that Seamus Coleman suffered from the "he's just being over hyped by the Irish posters" nonsense until it became clear he was one of (if not the) best fullbacks in the league.

I blame the Scots personally

Agreed.

Value-wise, Welbeck for McCarthy would be a straight swap. Welbeck the more gifted player but of limited value because he's a striker who won't reliably score goals. McCarthy not as prodigiously gifted but a much more reliable shout to do the job he's on the pitch to do.

McCarthy would be a daft signing, anyway. Everton would rob us blind for him, and he's nothing exceptional. There are better players available for much less out there. Aranguiz is the obvious one, for me - he really is like Vidal a few years back on the timeline. And we'd get him for £20m.

Was championing him last summer. Unfortunately don't think we'll push the boat out for him. Would likely cost too much.

Sad thing about McCarthy is that he genuinely looks like a Man Utd player...like he was born to play for us...maybe one day....But there's no way Everton would swap him for Welbeck as that would be like us willing to swap RVP for Coleman
