James McCarthy

Nobody is really claiming McCarthy is that good though. "Has the potential to be slightly better than Carrick" is as extreme as it's really gone and even that was disputed. Hardly an insanely outlandish level of hype.

And, again, it isn't just the Irish posters that rate him. We just happen to have seen more of him than a lot of other posters.

I wish everyone could have a nice guided view like yourself. Unfortunately, some people go way over the top.

When did I say there were? I said that if you fecking pay 5-10 more than what you'd pay for Mccarthy you COULD get a truly top player. Paying 30-35m minimum for him is ridiculous when guys like Vidal are valued at around 45.

Kroos was just an example of a top player acquired for a much lower fee. If he hadn't had a year left Bayern would've probably got around 35 million or so for him, which is around what you'd be purchasing Mccarthy for. That's a lot of money for him.

Barca got Rakitic for around 20 million Euro's for feck sake, just this window. Chelsea signed bloody Cesc Fabregas for 30 million and these are both just this window and off the top of my head. You really don't think top quality is out there? Chelsea also signed back Matic for £22m, again significantly less than what Mccarthy would cost. He'd be overpriced, simple as that really.

Agreed, McCarthy will be overpriced and it wouldn't make sense to go for him this window with Everton having no reason to sell their players.

Wanna give me some more 10/1? I'll give you 7/1 on Man Utd (better than you can get in any bookie).

I think you'll finish ahead of them (comfortably as well) but I also don't think you have a hope at the league. Chelsea were already better than you and whilst Sanchez is a top signing they've done ever better with Fabregas, Costa and Felipe Luis, as well as Mourinho probably settling a bit with this squad. City are too strong as well.

Unless you bring in 2-3 top class players that is, which I can't see you doing.

I'd throw a few bob with you that we will finish above yous..

You shouldn't use "Man Utd" either pal, it's viewed as offensive and you are on a Utd site.

No offence Red, but thats nonsense. Pool fans call us "Manure", but they took that from "Man Utd" - which is what other folk call us, or "United". I've never heard an opposition fan say it as an attempt to piss me off or degrade the club.

There's nothing offensive with sayin "Man Utd" - its just abbreviated, and it baffles me why some folk get so riled up about it & most cant give me a reason why its offensive to them.

Why is it offensive to you, out of curiosity man? Maybe i'm missing something here

Isn't it linked to the Munich disaster? I read something like that somewhere. I think there was some sort of chant used by Liverpool fans that had "Man Utd" in it so I guess that's why some people find it offensive.

Not 100% on that but its something like that.

It's a social media myth. "Man Utd" was used prior to Munich.

Well said. A lot of us older United fans still say Man Utd. It's just an abbreviation.

I don't get why it'd be offensive then, unless people only consider it offensive due to that myth. Doesn't seem like a massive issue either way, its only ever used harmlessly and as an abbreviation.

It probably is a load of 'ballax' but some bai was saying the rest of the world refer us as Man Utd and that is just not true now is it? Maybe some older fans still do but most I hear say United or Man United.

I personally don't use "Man Utd" but there's nothing at all wrong with it. For me, it's United. When one says "United" everyone knows who you're referring to. But if one says "Man Utd", no problem.

'We hate Man Utd and we hate Man Utd' - sung on First Division and Premier league grounds since 1964.

Nah none taken bud..

I class it as offensive and an insult.. It's used against us because of the Munich air disaster.

Liverpool/Leeds fans started it with a chant.. The U stands for "you". About Munich saying the team didn't come home and all that. The same with M.U.N.I.C.H. (Man utd never intended on coming home) When stated like that like it's offensive..

Yeah, match-going fans across the league. Not some poncey global fannybase.
Is that really what you and your footy mates call us when engaged in discussion? I've hardly ever heard anyone refer to us as Man Utd. But you're right, it's sung on the terraces I suppose.

Yep from Everton, to Sunderland, to Norwich to West Ham. Nothing to do with Munich.

The yank commentators refer to us as "Man Utd". Do you really think in a nation of obsessive PC'ness, they would call us that without doing their research, in case it was offensive baaaaay?

You missed out "aul" in front of "ballax" by the way.. :nono:;)

Petestorey was saying most of the world refer to us as that, which is somewhat off the truth a little, but his point was its not offensive. I've been sayin it all my life, aswell as "United" & "Man United" too.

Pete's been on here for 12 years as a Gooner & he's not in business of using insulting terms against the club.

Every opposition fan i've ever met, says the same terms as above in equal measure - its about personal choice at the time..

Oh aye I forgot the 'aul', it may not happen again lawd! Nah I wasn't offended or even mentioned Munich, some other fella was talking the big one, I just questioned the worldwide reference to Man Utd...Most of my mates who aren't United men call us United and don't think I've heard any commentators say it...well the world press and media don't. Man Utd sounds crud anyway.

I'd love to have McCarthy here, think he's a cracking wee player!

Would be great to get the Irish influence back again & he's way better than Clevz & Fellaini (who's hopefully out the door), but he's not the world class talent United should be goin for.

Although in saying that - he reminds me of Nicky Butt's style of play, so i wouldnt complain if we bought him - but not at the expense of a Vidal or Strootman though..

We need to sign him badly to have our ginger quota filled.....we've always done well with gingers in the team such as Strachan and Scholes so we need a need ginger ninja general

I still find it hard to believe that out of ;
Strootman,
Herrera
Matic and
McCarthy that Moyes chose to spend £30m on Fellaini. What was he thinking ?

What a load of nonsense. As already pointed out to you, the term was in existence long before Munich. Stop being a whopper.
