He was one of the most productive players in the Bundesliga last season but I wouldn't call him one of the best. Just comparing him to Bayern's attackers, if you were to give me the choice between Muller or Mkhi, Coman or Mkhi and Costa or Mkhi, he'd be second choice each time.
I haven't even bothered looking at the stats....do you think we can sign those players? We had a £85m turned down for muller last year and the they won't sell.

Whether or not we'd be able to sign them wasn't the question. Discussion was about whether or not he'd get into a side over any of those players, or Costa specifically.

Was Cleverley good enough to play in a Champions League winning team? Anderson? Lingard? Fellini? Rojo? They are all playing aren't they?
That's pretty much the point though: the expectation is or at least should be that he's much, much better than those players. If he isn't, it's more or less pointless to sign him: we have more than enough dross as it is. The expected standard cannot be 'as good as Lingard' because Lingard himself meets that expectation perfectly.

Not particularly convinced he's what we needed. We already have players who can get you good stats in a counter attacking setup. What he didn't have was a genuine creative #10. Oh well. Hope Mourinho knows what he's doing

Dortmund averaged more than 60% possession in Bundesliga and in Europa league. They play quick transition game but they had lot of possession last season.

He is a number 10 that can play RW too.

He is a massive improvement on both positions and with the rumors of Pogba and James, Mourinho is clearly looking for a number 10 too.

I'm well aware of that but a lot of his productivity stems from goals or assists on the counter. That's where he's at his best.

The original question was
"Is he good enough to play in a Champions League winning team, or would United need an upgrade if our ambitions get to that point?

I realise we're some way away from competing with the best in Europe, but I'm just trying to gauge exactly how good this lad is. Would he look out of place at Real/Barca/Bayern, for example?"

So maybe my point is misdirected but he is probably the best, most attainable (realistic) player we can get for that position.

Jose's team play lot of counter attacking game. Would have doubted this signing had it been with Van Gaal in charge but with Jose I'm sure he will suit the playing style.

1. We have no real presence on the right side of the pitch. It's either mata who would be out of position or lingard that goes completely AWOL in certain games and shouldn't be a first XI starter right now.

2. I don't think mkhitaryan is coming to solely play CAM/#10. I also don't think Jose has finished with signings after zlatan and mkhitaryan.

3. I have more trust in jose signing players than LVG after his useless transfer windows (barring martial). If Jose starts buying big names and selling them after one season and also starts claiming he "pulled out of transfers" whilst the likes of vidal/renato/pedro move on after strong interest. Then i'll start to worry.

Tbf, LVG made quality signings, although he doesn't know what to do with them.

Shaw, Herrera, Memphis, Martial, Schneiderlin, Blind, Bastian are very good players.

i don't want to take the thread off mkhitaryan, however i'd suggest his signing of players that he ultimately didn't want to play because they were seemingly too volatile/creative, would be considered poor/useless transfer windows and he should have bought players that fit his authoritarian model of football.

Going back to mkhitaryan, one would assume, as of right now, that he's being sort after for the RW as that is our obvious weak spot.

People need to stop with the whole 'Watford' value Deeney at more than x £m. They haven't valued him at anything, they have just said he's not for sale, as is their right.

If you say no to 20m quid then you "value" that player higher than that. Of course.

Value is only ever what a seller is prepared to pay or a buyer is prepared to accept. Leicester were prepared to pay 20m for Deeney, his worth to Watford is higher than that.

If, at whatever point, Watford didn't mind selling him, he will go for no more than Watford have rejected.

I'm aware of basic market forces, but it doesn't apply. Watford don't want to sell. Would they sell him for £150m? Probably. That doesn't now become e Troy Deeny's value.

Deeny had 13 goals and 7 assists last seasoin the PL and he works really hard for the team defending from the front. His physicality makes him real real handful for defenders as well.

Yes he did, the circumstances were a bit different though, we were bidding against Citeh and whoever got him would have won the league. I don't think we had any competition this time out, we could have left him at Dortmund and signed him on a free ready to play for us in our return to the Champion's League.
And how do you know you will qualify for the CL next season without upgrading the team? Even if we (foolishly?) assume Leicester won´t compete for the top 4 again and that there won´t be another surprise top 4 contender (WHU?); that still leaves six teams competing for four spots. All six teams have a top coach, so there is no coaching edge either. If we are honest United played the most ugly football of them all last year. Upgrades are needed now.

Would love this signing but he plays in a team that soaks up pressure then counterattacks with ridiculous pace and speed. He can run with the ball. Finish and pick a pass I just worry that our slower game wouldn't get the best out of him......BUT hoping that this potential signing means Jose is changing that..

You didn't actually believe Mourinho would maintain LVG's slow transition philosophy, did you? That's change is as sure as Manchester United wear red.

I just can't seem to get too excited over this one. Looks a good player, but doesn't really strike me as a next level signing. Next year on a free? Then yeah, great. But nearly 40m on a 28yr old with one year left on his contract? Think i would prefer that money to go on Draxler myself, much younger, much more exciting and crazy potential.

You want to spend the money on someone who has been underwhelming for at least a couple of seasons just because he is young and may turn out good?

Around £30M sounds a fair price to me. Happy this is happening he looks a very good player. Also, it's good to have a legit ITK on the caf thanks @Acquire Me

-whisper- Don't let him know Gotze is free agent next summer, or I fear we're stuck with Lingaard and Mata on right wing this season :nervous:

 Draxler over Micki, couldnt imagine that i ever will read things like this. Tell this Woodward and Mourinho please. Draxler hast got "potential" since years. But obviously never showed any constant perfomances, never delivered anything great. he will be stuck as an "could be good" unitl the end of his career. Wolfsburg still asking themselfs what their money was for, and Schlacke is laughing. They have such less to enjoy, but one little thing is the amount of money they got for this mediocre lad.

I know, right? Draxler over Micki...there is literally no end to the shit you have to read in this thread. "Oh, this guy Draxler sounds cool, I am sure I have seen him sometime and I sure have heard his name a lot, also I once signed him on FM and he is young, so he must be better."

We even had one guy calling Micki a "Ashley Young type signing".

He's so much better than Draxler.

Memphis and Januzaj were supposed to be exciting with crazy potential too. We've got plenty of young players who might go on to be successful in the future - we need to supplement that with established players who can make an instant contribution.

30m for a 28yr old clearly shows that Jose is signing players for the short period of 3yrs that he will be at United

Maybe you accept the money in fishes or shells, we dont. And it was a expensive chair btw..

I am Norwegian, we accept barrels of oil, cod and sheep as a currency. The chair will be on Dortmunds end since it was you dicking around that made the perfect gentleman Raviola break out of character and toss it.

But seriously, you are based in a euro economy, so the sum will of course be negotiated and paid out in euros. It is just that MUFC is a English club, and members here are mostly English so everything is converted into pounds. Just like the English media lazily will take the transfer sum 38m euros and convert directly into £38m pounds, to make it seem like we paid a lot more.

Or hes looking for a mix of youth and the finished product? He's got a desire to win, so surely he'll be looking for some established players?
