I'm all for giving credit where it's due but one game here and there isn't enough. He's part of a bottom half table defense and is paid handsomely for it.

That's not the point here. Maguire reached an absolute bottom as United player with some shit fans even booing him. In a way, he was being made as a scapegoat for everything that is wrong with United. Kind of like Fellaini was in post Fergie years.

To come back from that into this version (and am not talking only about this game) is a sign of his mental strength and an example to the whole team. Don't care if we are 15th, 5th or 1st. Such turnaround in the player should be celebrated. We need players with that kind of mental strength to get us back where we belong as a football club.

I’ve absolutely hammered Maguire over recent years because I’ve genuinely felt he’s been terrible.

Even though I don’t believe he’s at the level we need if we want to compete at the top level, I have to give him credit because he’s been absolutely brilliant in recent weeks. Not only have his performances been solid, his mentality and command of the defence has been excellent. He could continue to really thrive under a solid structure and good management. Well done to him for staying strong and coming through it as a stronger person.

Pretty much. Though I think some of his recent performances have been exaggerated. Yesterday he was brilliant and credit where it's due.

That video of Maguire calling Havertz a cheating shithouse and Andy Mitten claiming he spent 48 hours before that game in bed…..yeah….fair fecking play Hazza! Awesome day for him!

For that alone he is absolved of all stupidity in the past 3 years. Shalbhead for vice captain

I've criticised Maguire often for being a bit passive, like he never seems to do this but it's what he needs in my opinion. A bit more edge/aggression because he can be intimidating and put much more pressure on opposition players and the ref. The south american fire of Licha/Ugarte is rubbing off on him, next he'll be drinking mate and waving imaginary cards.

That's great.

Was immense yesterday, this was the perfect game for him in terms of Arsenal crossing it continually and he was completely dominant. Also went on a great mazy run!
Hard to see him being dropped on this form.

I appreciate the effort. You will see though that I've been cosistent in relation to other underperformers too. @OverratedOpinion

Still buzzing about our performance yesterday and I just wanted to put some respect on Maguires name. I was just thinking how his attitude has been so good for the last few years, and now I feel like he’s practically a standard bearer in my eyes for the attitude and fight needed going forward.

The guy has been so badly criticised, me included at times, and he’s kept his head down and nailed his spot in the new-look United. Under the radar he’s actually been consistent for quite a while now (I think I was of the opinion that he was one of our better CBs last season, but I’ve blanked my memory off last season mostly! Am I wrong?).

I’d shake the guys hand and tell him how much respect I have for his ability to come through everything. For the first time in a long time I’m actually proud of some of our players, even if they won’t be deemed good enough ultimately. Didn’t think I’d be saying that any time soon.

Sunday really hit home just what a hard bastard Maguire actually is.

He's definitely the bloke in our squad you cower behind in a fight.

His comeback has been nothing short of extraordinary. He had hit rock bottom and due to the pub brawl his personal life algo got entwined with it as well.

However, everyone needs to respect his resilience and sense of pride. He hunkered down, lost the captaincy and the respect, was indirectly shown the door, but he never let his professionalism drop. Even during the toughest of times, I felt that he was the model professional, always trying the best he could under the circumstances. Playing as the farthest defender in a 3-man defense certainly helped his confidence and we are beginning to see flashes of the player he was expected to become when we bought him.

He may never be athletic and skillful enough to be a legend for us but I still appreciate his professionalism and fight - things a lot of young footballers have forgotten. For every Sancho and Rashford, we need a Maguire to balance the books. Hope he finds success in his career - either here or elsewhere.

Man Utd 3:1 Southampton New
The reception he gets these days at Old Trafford really is something.

The way he's come back from being probably the most ridiculed footballer in the league is quite something

THought that when he's in, we're noticeably more aggressive at the back.

Man Utd 1:3 Brighton New
You can't play any type of attacking football with him in team. It is so painful to watch how slow and immobile he is.
We made huge mistake giving him new contract.
Unless our plan is to park the bus. Then.....he is perfect player to have.

Famously the guy that allows you to play a high defensive line according to our resident Maguire expert. Not that I want to single him out from our defense (and midfield) tonight, all of them were underwhelming with Onana being the worst out of the bunch.

Bournemouth, Newcastle, Brighton. In all 3 games at home where our defence was all over the place, he was central defender in that.
Guy just opens huge gaps in defence because he is too slow to cover anything. Arsenal and Pool games are his bread and butter; penalty box filled with players where his "area of work" is penalty box and clearing crosses.

In high line he is like fish outside water.

We didnt give him a new contract, we just extended his current one with a year. I think that is fine eventhough Maguire is a limited player. We have other thing to sort out and extending Maguire gives us some extra time for that.

Didnt exactly have a great game, commentators said Maguire played Brighton onside for their first goal. They even suggested that he was injured because he was not playing well.

It’s no different to before we signed him. When he can defend deeper and it’s lots of heading he’s a very good player. If he has to cover much ground and play a higher line he’s very ordinary.

Should've been let go this summer. Stuck with him and his big wages for another 18 months.

I was reading not long ago on here how he’s so much faster at progressing the ball than De Ligt as the middle CB. It’s none sense, he’s still as slow as ever., but none of them will progress it fast in this team.

We should have sold him a couple of years ago.

He was with Martinez dropped the only one out of the back 3 and 2 midfielders who could actually pass the ball forward.

That is not good.

Yep. It's very noticeable how sideways and backwards everything is from those alongside him.

He is what he is. No surprises and he is at least consistent. Him and de Ligt as 2 out of 3 CBs will always be too slow and immobile for a top team.

From the replay it sure does look like he played Brighton onside for the first goal and then he was obviously (way) too slow to keep up with Mitoma and Minteh.

A bad game after he had some good games where he was required to defend his box. Today a little more was required/expected and he was involved in conceding a goal.

Him and De Ligt will never work for a team looking to play progressive football. I think De Ligt is a good player, but that's about it. I really wish we never went near Maguire, he's been an awful signing. De Ligt may well go the same way. Both seem to thrive only when we're on the backfoot.

If we are rebuilding, preparing for next season and basically throwing season away then i don't understand why the feck we extended his contract? By all standards he should be in same group with Eriksen, Lindelof, Casemiro, Antony and Evans.

If we were inches close to challenging for title then one more year is fine (because he can be useful then and there) but in this case, there are zero reasons keeping mediocre and expensive player like him.

Maguire’s semi-decent form of late has caused a problem for the team it seems. I think under Amorim we played the best with Maz - MDL - Martinez as the 3 with Amad as rwb. Despite Harry having a few very good games since, I feel we need to go back to that, with Yoro getting some minutes too.

Harry can play the games where we will be pinned back a bit.
