He doesn't suit the managers plan to play a high line. So either back the manager and get rid or got back to the low block and change manager again.
I think, this high line thing isn't as essential to Rubens system as you think it is. From what I heard, the depth of that was also something Ruben tweaked on a game by game basis depending on opponent, game plan and available players.
He has done quite well this season, and he has a fantastic mentality. I have been a very harsh critic of Maguire in the past but right now he is doing very well and our youngsters need a good example like him in the dressing room.
"Fantastic", "excellent", "very well", "example in the dressing room" - are we really talking about the same player here?! It is one thing, to not join in on over-the-top criticism but I think, this is overcompensating quite a bit. Maguire is anything but the future of United, he is a symbol for so many things that go wrong with this club - letting other clubs fleece us, either ignoring scouting or be really bad at it, when it comes to roles in the team, players believing in their own hype and being overall completely without a long term plan. A lot of it is not Maguires fault but he is the posterboy for it. He is probably a decent defender but he gets older and he is on insane wages for what he is. We are repeating the same mistakes - as much as minutes for Eriksen or McTominay were completely wasted, so are minutes on Maguire right now. Play younger players, if they are good enough then great, we invested time during phase for failure isn't that bad as we aren't competing anyway. If they aren't good enough, still fine, we can generate funds with selling them with "PL proven" on the packaging.
Maguires timing wasn't great and a part of me is slightly sorry for him. But it isn't about him, it should be about the future of the club. Let him leave to close that chapter and don't start using him as some sort of mascot for the dressing room.
Let hope we find a magic money tree then because it would be ridiculous to divert even more funds to one after buying 5 in the last 3 years (and still not improving on what we had).
I think, we did improve. Certainly in terms of age profile. I'd personally say also in terms of profile but I get your point, none of them was a huge success for various reasons. The point still stands - the environment that Maguire seems to flourish in is when we play a rather compact game plan, tight knit where he can use his height and physique to overpower opponents. Issue is though, this isn't the way we should aspire to play in this day and age and most importantly with the ambitions we should have.
No doubt, with tight resources is will be tricky to find working combinations but Maguire isn't the answer and reading some you talk about him, I am really worried that the club might be backwards minded enough to double down on the mistake they made last summer.
