I'm all for giving credit where it's due but one game here and there isn't enough. He's part of a bottom half table defense and is paid handsomely for it.

That's not the point here. Maguire reached an absolute bottom as United player with some shit fans even booing him. In a way, he was being made as a scapegoat for everything that is wrong with United. Kind of like Fellaini was in post Fergie years.

To come back from that into this version (and am not talking only about this game) is a sign of his mental strength and an example to the whole team. Don't care if we are 15th, 5th or 1st. Such turnaround in the player should be celebrated. We need players with that kind of mental strength to get us back where we belong as a football club.

I’ve absolutely hammered Maguire over recent years because I’ve genuinely felt he’s been terrible.

Even though I don’t believe he’s at the level we need if we want to compete at the top level, I have to give him credit because he’s been absolutely brilliant in recent weeks. Not only have his performances been solid, his mentality and command of the defence has been excellent. He could continue to really thrive under a solid structure and good management. Well done to him for staying strong and coming through it as a stronger person.

Pretty much. Though I think some of his recent performances have been exaggerated. Yesterday he was brilliant and credit where it's due.

That video of Maguire calling Havertz a cheating shithouse and Andy Mitten claiming he spent 48 hours before that game in bed…..yeah….fair fecking play Hazza! Awesome day for him!

For that alone he is absolved of all stupidity in the past 3 years. Shalbhead for vice captain

I've criticised Maguire often for being a bit passive, like he never seems to do this but it's what he needs in my opinion. A bit more edge/aggression because he can be intimidating and put much more pressure on opposition players and the ref. The south american fire of Licha/Ugarte is rubbing off on him, next he'll be drinking mate and waving imaginary cards.

That's great.

Was immense yesterday, this was the perfect game for him in terms of Arsenal crossing it continually and he was completely dominant. Also went on a great mazy run!
Hard to see him being dropped on this form.

I appreciate the effort. You will see though that I've been cosistent in relation to other underperformers too. @OverratedOpinion

Still buzzing about our performance yesterday and I just wanted to put some respect on Maguires name. I was just thinking how his attitude has been so good for the last few years, and now I feel like he’s practically a standard bearer in my eyes for the attitude and fight needed going forward.

The guy has been so badly criticised, me included at times, and he’s kept his head down and nailed his spot in the new-look United. Under the radar he’s actually been consistent for quite a while now (I think I was of the opinion that he was one of our better CBs last season, but I’ve blanked my memory off last season mostly! Am I wrong?).

I’d shake the guys hand and tell him how much respect I have for his ability to come through everything. For the first time in a long time I’m actually proud of some of our players, even if they won’t be deemed good enough ultimately. Didn’t think I’d be saying that any time soon.

Sunday really hit home just what a hard bastard Maguire actually is.

He's definitely the bloke in our squad you cower behind in a fight.

His comeback has been nothing short of extraordinary. He had hit rock bottom and due to the pub brawl his personal life algo got entwined with it as well.

However, everyone needs to respect his resilience and sense of pride. He hunkered down, lost the captaincy and the respect, was indirectly shown the door, but he never let his professionalism drop. Even during the toughest of times, I felt that he was the model professional, always trying the best he could under the circumstances. Playing as the farthest defender in a 3-man defense certainly helped his confidence and we are beginning to see flashes of the player he was expected to become when we bought him.

He may never be athletic and skillful enough to be a legend for us but I still appreciate his professionalism and fight - things a lot of young footballers have forgotten. For every Sancho and Rashford, we need a Maguire to balance the books. Hope he finds success in his career - either here or elsewhere.
