Gun control

That’s very sad. I feel bad for the girl that she felt that was her only way out of the horror. Man, can’t even imagine what her family is going through right now. She survived the shooting “yeah!!” And now this. Feck!

What a fecked up situation. America has become numb to this shit.

Having an existential crisis here.

The Toronto Police Service started a gun buy back program today and they're offering $350 for handguns. My first gun is a cheap, chinese made gun that I would not be able to get that much for in a private sale as they have saturated the market here in the last few years. I am very much tempted to hand this one over and take the cash despite it not being a danger to anyone.

Would this make me a bad person?

Of course no. A deal is a deal.

Why would anyone pay $350 for a crap gun that was above it's valuation?..

Because it looks good in the news? The claim is that unwanted guns are often stored carelessly and more likely to end up in the streets.
Just give it to them and take the money. It won't be stolen from your garage or wherever it'll eventually wind up and no one will be hurt.

I take it that they aren't buying back guns to get value for their money so I don't see any reason you should have moral qualms about it.

Yes. The high price for handguns seems like an incentive.

I'll shift the moral qualms to whether I spend the money on cocaine or hookers.

No. Your Chinese gun is a liability as opposed to an asset. You need to take the trading position my man.

It's almost a fully depreciated asset. Normally guns don't depreciate too much, but a few years ago merchants here started selling a combo of the gun and massive crates of surplus Chinese ammo for $500. I paid about $425 for the same gun about 4 years prior to that offer. Most people said the gun was almost free at that price. I'd say that privately it would be hard to shift (legally) for even close to $200.

Sell it and use the money to buy a gun that isn't a piece of Chinese crap.

The police finally came and picked up my gun yesterday. Three days after the buyback program ended, but they say they're going to honour the offer because I'd actually called in before it expired and it was their fault they couldn't come by.

The officer was nice and friendly, no disdain even though he said he didn't like guns. I was high AF, too.

He asked if I was going to buy a new gun with the money!

Switzerland voted by landslide for stricter gun laws in a referendum.
For those who don't know, they have one of the most lax gun laws in Europe.

Are you legally allowed to sell guns privately? How does that work? Is it just like selling a car?

Is there a presidential candidate who has the balls to run with Make America safe again?

Guardian said:
Prosecutors say the Florida deputy who failed to confront a gunman during last year’s Parkland school shooting has been arrested on 11 charges.

State attorney Mike Satz announced on Tuesday that 56-year-old Scot Peterson faces child neglect, culpable negligence and perjury charges. Peterson, then a Broward county deputy, was on duty during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School but never went inside.

Satz says the charges carry a combined prison sentence of nearly 100 years. Peterson’s bail was set at $102,000.

A Peterson lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nikolas Cruz, 20, faces the death penalty if convicted of killing 17 people and wounding 17 others in the attack. He has offered to plead guilty in return for a life sentence, but prosecutors have refused that offer.

Yes. There are different procedures depending on the type of gun.

Private sales of hunting rifles and shotguns only require you to verify the person has a license. It's up to the seller to decide if they want to verify the license is valid. Some buyers get uppity if you want to verify them. (mahrights!)

Private sales of handguns and some rifles are managed by the RCMP because these guns are registered. The Mounties transfer the registration between parties and then the buyer can get the gun. A bit like footballers, that.

Alabama is prosecuting a pregnant woman for manslaughter for being shot in the stomach — but not her shooter

On Wednesday, AL.com reported that Marshae Jones, a 27-year-old woman from Birmingham, Alabama, was indicted on manslaughter charges.

Her crime? Allegedly instigating a fight that led to her being shot in the stomach and losing her pregnancy. The woman who actually shot her, on the other hand — 23-year-old Ebony Jemison — is walking free after a grand jury rejected the case against her.

Immediately after the shooting, which allegedly stemmed from a fight over the baby’s father and took place outside a Dollar General in Pleasant Grove, in December, prosecutors announced their intention to charge Jones for having a miscarriage.

“The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,” said police lieutenant Danny Reid, who said they initially considered a murder charge. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.”

Charges against women for having miscarriages have been occurring in recent years as right-wing prosecutors seek to find loopholes in the constitutional right to an abortion. Such laws disproportionately tend to be used against women of color.
