Gun control

If the unborn baby also had a gun this likely wouldn't have happened.

Alabama is prosecuting a pregnant woman for manslaughter for being shot in the stomach — but not her shooter

On Wednesday, AL.com reported that Marshae Jones, a 27-year-old woman from Birmingham, Alabama, was indicted on manslaughter charges.

Her crime? Allegedly instigating a fight that led to her being shot in the stomach and losing her pregnancy. The woman who actually shot her, on the other hand — 23-year-old Ebony Jemison — is walking free after a grand jury rejected the case against her.

Immediately after the shooting, which allegedly stemmed from a fight over the baby’s father and took place outside a Dollar General in Pleasant Grove, in December, prosecutors announced their intention to charge Jones for having a miscarriage.

“The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,” said police lieutenant Danny Reid, who said they initially considered a murder charge. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.”

Charges against women for having miscarriages have been occurring in recent years as right-wing prosecutors seek to find loopholes in the constitutional right to an abortion. Such laws disproportionately tend to be used against women of color.

Well that's the most fecked up thing I've ever heard.

Alabama is truly beyond backwards.

wtf

5 mass shootings in one day. America is fecked.

A 3 year old and a 6 year old killed at a garlic festival ffs (according to the link above). Would make me worried about doing anything like that in the US.

This reminds me of one of politicians in Poland who's against gun control who says it's worth sacrificing even 100,000 lives in the name of freedom. Pretty sure a 3 year old and a 6 year old would not have wanted to be sacrificed for 'freedom'.

Comes to a point when I have more fear for my sisters' safety in the US than I have for my parents in Nigeria.

Are we becoming desensitized to all these killings in the US? I mean if I see the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" argument one more time, I could lose my shit big time.

It doesn't make any sense but people will still justify the use of guns over there. American cops have killed more people in a month than UK cops have killed in decades. That's just fecked up.

It's getting like "Oh another shooting? Well that's their problem. What do people expect."

Then we get Trump with his "thoughts and prayers" tweets but then nothing more is done...until the next inevitable shooting.

Can somebody just explain to me why your average citizen would ever need/want to own some kind of high powered semi automatic rifles? Surely that's got to be a starting point if they don't want to ban guns altogether?

To protect themselves from other citizens who possess high powered semi-automatic rifles, legally or illegally.
Not that I believe in that s**t argument, but that's what is a typical reply.

My reaction when I saw it on TV. 3...that's not too bad. It's horrible.
Sad but true unfortunately. Even though a 6 year old boy dying and his mother and grandmother wounded, among a dozen other injuries at a Garlic festival should always be a tragedy. My initial reaction was how awful, at least only 3 dead so far.

But if they were banned altogether, it wouldn't be an issue would it? I can see why would want to justify having a pistol or something for protection but semi automatic weapons?

fecking America, do the right thing

Most people there simply feel that the right to bare arms is more important than the lives of American children. This is also a country where most people are happy for poor people to die or normal people to become bankrupt rather than consider a free healthcare system. The culture there is totally selfish and inward looking. The country is alien to us and despite us sharing a language they are completely different to us. We will never understand it.

They constantly say that criminals will still get hold of guns, and then they won't be able to defend themselves against them. I've already seen people saying "California has stricter gun laws and look it's still happened". Basically, they're brainwashed pussies that refuse to let go of their gun shaped blankeys and do the right thing to make their country safer for future generations.

Pistols are semi-automatic weapons.

So they are basically saying that the gun making companies are so poorly regulated that if legal possession of arms is banned, then the companies will just sell them in the illegal market and criminals and terrorists will buy them.

That, and there's enough in circulation already. Or they'll just bring them over the border.

A criminal could get hold of a gun here in the UK too but nobody is clamouring to get their hands on one. There really is nothing good about about the US. Supposed to be the greatest nation in the land but they're really backward on all the basics. Such a shitty place to be.

Pistols are semi-automatic weapons.

That's how much I know about them. I'm talking about just owning a basic handgun rather than high powered weapons.

I agree, it's disgraceful.

Or even permeates into their sporting culture, where it's all about 'getting your money.' Even if it's at the detriment of the team.

What’s a high powered rifle?

What’s a high powered rifle?

The moronic things used to kill innocent kids and adults on a daily basis in the so called land of the free. The things most civilised countries have banned, but the USA sells them in supermarkets next to tins of beans and brain dead idiots defend their right to own and use them because they still think they are in the Wild West or in some kind of Call of Duty game.
