Gary Neville

With how he's traveling, I doubt jetlag would be that much of an issue. I find business class combats that well enough, I can sleep pretty damn easily in those conditions, and Rashford's going to be flying in an even better environment. This whole story really has been blown up to a mad level.
Jet lag would absolutely impact performance in training for high level athletes, there's a reason why teams usually look crap after the international break. It all boils down to the usual, there is nothing technically wrong with what they did by going away, but it displays a certain mentality to do so when we are in the position we're in.

These people are paid exorbitant amounts of money to make sure they're in the best possible state to perform, this expectation of them being able to do whatever they want on a break is projection of normal job thought process onto an incomparable situation.

Exactly, its such a non issue.

I think this is missing the point. Ferguson was an obsessive, as were the spine of the team – that's where Neville is coming from. He's not seeing it in some of the players, on or off the pitch, and after underperforming for so long.

To be honest I was more offended by his insistence of praising Liverpool players. Even the panel felt he'd have sulked if Gravenburch wasn't included in the top 3 list.

I don't get that insistence of finding a way to praise the enemy at every turn. You would never see Carragher or Souness do the same, they make up things to criticise ffs.

Yeah that was weird, that part.

I've just found out that Rashford was primarily in America for the Nike training camp.

This wasn't even mentioned in Neville's lengthy tirade.

Maybe instead of hiding behind 'this will look bad', he should take a step back, realise he's the one holding the megaphone, not telling the full story and going out of his way to make it look bad.

Incredibly, needless bad faith stuff from Neville. He's single-handedly created a storm in a teacup so he can get himself more money from Huel.

What a prat.

This is one of his more unnecessary diatribes. I like Neville on a personal note, which I feel like I have to say far too often, but he doesn’t half get carried away and talk a load of bollocks.

As usually Neville is spewing complete BS. It's a 4 hour time difference and an 8 hour flight to NY

Hardly something, that will hit you with debilitating jetlag if you just use your head a little bit and rest up on the return flight.
Probably projection from Neville, who'd most likely stay awake to work and consequently be completely wrecked afterwards.

By Marlon Harewood?

That's not exactly true though is it? They have all come out with numerous stories of taking the piss over the years since they retired. It's hypocritical.

If you’re off partying the night before and missing training (like Marcus did last season) then you’re fair game for criticism.

But why the feck do they have to sit miserably in Manchester for 2 weeks just because we’re utter shite?

You can see why that England side of the 00s weren’t as successful as they should be. Filled with weirdos like Gary getting the huel adverts in.

My favourite is the vanilla

When he spat out his water and said "I need my Huel" I died a little inside.

He's entitled to his opinion obviously but I wish that sometimes he'd recognise when to just tone it down a little considering the position he's in where he's almost seen as the voice of the club. Anything he says gets amplified into a big headline. In this case it was news for 24 hours or so, everyone had their say and then moved on. And now because of him it's all brought up again the day before Amorim's first press conference which no doubt means half the questions will now be about this. It's just another distraction and excuse for negativity.

Everything has to be extreme with him. It's always "I'm not having that", "that's not right" etc. Just say you don't necessarily agree with it, wouldn't have done it yourself but it's up to them.

I wonder if he's liked at all within the club now by the actual players - he retired nearly 15 years ago now, it's only Evans who ever played with him that is left. I get they're all polite ot him if he does an interview etc. but Rashford etc. must think he's a monumental bellend.

Do we know where Rashford has actually travelled?
If he went to the Nike rehab camp in Portland (which Gary insinuated) - that's 10-11 flight time and an 8 hour time difference.
He would have then stopped over in New York to catch the basket ball game.

It's the second bit that's a problem in my books and clearly for Neville. When theres an international break, the internationals go and play and the injured players probably continue rehab or stick around for light training? I'd assume the fit players have a break but he's decided to take a long haul flight to Portland at the Nike Rehab Training over what, a 4-5 day period? What fitness professional would suggest this is a good idea? Maybe it was. Who knows. I find it weird and Gary has played football and found it fishy too.
Unless it's a nice way to get a spot of NYC on the return. And yeah, I see a problem in priorities there.

That Nike Oregon Project place is where we sent Rooney to "get some fitness" back in the day. It's been found out to have a history of doping athletes. Maybe we will see a reinvigorated Rashford after the break? hahaha.

Neville did make a point about they were focusing too much on Rashford and he rather questioned Casemiro if it was a good idea for his body to essentially force an international break with the long flights and jet lag when he might take a while to recover from that.

It's a poor decision from a PR pov. If Rashford is shit the next few games this will be brought up again and again. Maybe he doesn't care. Most of them don't.

If?

At this point in time Gary is more Sky Sports than he is Man United.

Everyone at the club including Amorim should treat him as such...he is more interesting in going viral and trending for Sky.

Neville's position on this is silly. He even makes the argument himself for why his own viewpoint is silly. You can also see Keane thinks its a silly position to take. The players were given time off and went away. Both Casemiro and Rashford turned up for training. There is no indication Amorim or United was upset with their choice of destination. There is no PR angle to this apart from the one that neville has now shone a spotlight on with his comments. This is were he does a disservice. He has no clue whether the staff were upset with Rashford going to the US (seeing as Casemiro was there as its clear no one was really concerned), he has no clue how long they were there for, no clue whether they had any jet lag, no clue if it affected their training performance on that Monday. So by all means, there was 0 issue and 0 indication that this was even a problem with what Rashford and Casemiro did but because for whatever reason Neville was upset with it he has now shone a spotlight on it. The disservice he does is as the biggest media voice for United, if there was an issue from the media about it of which there was not, he should be the one saying it's not a big issue, nothing to worry about. But instead, he is the one actively creating a false narrative just for content.

He's right when he says that if Rashford plays poorly on Sunday then people will point to the trip as a reason why, but fails to recognise that he himself is a huge part of that.

By devoting so much time talking about it he's made it into a bigger issue. Just a weird way to start off the pod. It's clear no one else was that arsed.

You can also see Keane thinks its a silly position to take.
I think this is all you have to know about this. If even Roy Keane, who always complains about the lack of determination and effort of current players, doesn't see the issue, than you really lost it.

Amorim basically agreed with Neville in the interview.

Also if I'm not mistaken Keane said he'd do it, but he also said he would never be as shit as Rashford was.

Err, yeah. They are his employer.

Maybe you should stick to watching MUTV if you want the softball questions and glossing over terrible performances.

the commentary about Casemiro and Rashford does take on another level when you consider that Lisandro Martinez passed upon the clubs offer of staying in Argentina and returned to Manchester instead. I don't think its too much to ask fans to expect the highest possible standards at a team trying to return to the top, these players have short careers and are set up for life if they retire tomorrow...Imagine the feel good factor if all the players who could be at the training ground just went there instead of on vacation because they are committed to the cause.

I think what triggered him is that he thought Rashford was in Portland, where its is GMT+8. He said in the Amorim interview that he got that wrong.

As someone who does the NY to UK flight a lot (a Brit living in the US) , I know the jet lag takes a toll.

Amorim said that players did nothing wrong because they club had sanctioned the time off. But he did seem to indicate it wont be happening again under him, nor would it have happened under SAF.

Quite honestly, Rashford should be in hiding when not picked for an England friendly. The fact that he is not even in the conversation for an England call up anymore just shows how far his stock has fallen. Turning up at a basketball game in the US to mix it with the players is a Sancho move.

Amorim said to Neville and put it very nicely that puts it all to bed among those having a hissy fit over Gary Neville.

They had 5 days off. They're adults. They have kids. They can do what they want technically in that 5 days, take a flight wherever. But Amorim's view is the club's standard needs to change in that regard, and said Neville had a different opinion because he was under a leadership where standards were different.

I think its clear Amorim isn't impressed with Rashford's decision making from that.

This. Not quite 'hiding' as it feels harsh, but certainly not going out like some big daddy celebrity when you're not even good enough to make a cut for a national team. Take a leaf out of Pellistri's book who would focus on training during international breaks the minute Sancho got dropped because he knew he'd get a chance or two.

Exactly. You know a new manager is coming in and you want to risk not being at 100%.

Yet you are on social media post training telling everyone how great training was, despite being god awful for the previous manager for the past year or so.

I think Neville and Amorim are on the same page. Standards need to rise to what they were under SAF.

It's pathetic. You are not a big baller if you can't get in an England squad ahead of Jarred Bowen or Noni Madueke.

You should only wear sensible clothes and not pose for photos because some no mark dullard on the Internet says so.

If you want to be a meme and squander your potential then go for it but if you want to actually win league titles then grow up and treat your career as your priority. It is really not hard to understand but obviously you want to clutch your pearls and imply people have agendas for criticizing players who are not performing.

Yeah Gary doesn't mind where his money comes from...if you pay him enough he'll say anything.

I'm not subscribed to MUTV so can't comment on that, but as a general rule if Gary is on commentary then I'm changing streams.
