Fabio Coentrao

We spent the summer courting Baines then when we knew Everton weren't selling him for less than £20m we agreed a deal for Coentrao which was all too late.

I hope the deal can be resurrected because I get the feeling he'll be one of those players who never really showed their class at Madrid but would do elsewhere. We also really need a left-back which is obvious.

He's not 'world class' or whatever but he's a good player who would probably be hungry enough for it.

A loan with an option to buy makes sense until the summer.

Even though id prefer Coentrao, can still see Moyes holding out for Baines, both would be cool though

Would prefer Shaw over Baines or Coentrao.

Coentrao is a good attacking option, but defensively, I don't think he's all too solid. He also prefers to play left wing over left back, He's done well at LB for Madrid, but it's not his preferred position. And there's no chance of him playing on the left there, because of that Ronaldo guy they've got. Could probably get a game on the left for us, but it doesn't solve our LB issue.

Baines doesn't seem like a move with much longevity, and would be poor value, as Everton will command top dollar, because he's one of their best players, and because he's English, which always jacks the price up. English Tax. Look at Jonjo Shelvey. Because he's English, Swansea had to actually pay money for him.

Was there any truth in Nani and Ronaldo having to console him when he found out he wouldn't be joining us?

Apparently.

If this was to happen, then it'll probably be a loan with option to buy. If we meet Madrid in the next round of the CL, then they'd probably consider it as a bonus that Coentrao wouldn't be able to play.

At the time it was said he wanted to play LB for us, and have Evra on the wing in front of him.

That's what the story was, broken up in tears, apparently, but a week later he was "happy to be playing for the best club in the world". Guess the move to Bayern fell through too....

I've never heard him talk about playing as a winger. Even when he was with Benfica I only recall him at left back. I've seen him play left midfield, but that's usually been for some tactical reason about who they wanted marking.

I actually think he's a good defender, certainly better than Evra. He's good coming forward as well, good in possession and a good passer/crosser.

Coentrao's problem at Madrid is that the fans love Marcelo who is nowadays almost as good defensively and who is exceptional going forward. He was seen by the Madrid fans as a luxury buy - a favour to Mendes and Mourinho - and he never did enough to shed that label.

I think he'd do well for us, but the injuries bother me.

This is one I see happening and I hope it does because he's a very good player, not top class but not far off it. Loan until the summer would be fine and if he goes well then I would like us to make it permanent. Isn't there a chance Chelsea might want him on loan too though if he's available?

Better option than Baines IMO. Although Alex Sandro is most certainly the dream buy in that position.

Would be happy with him as our only January signing. Add Herrera there and I would be delighted.

He's really very good. Makes too much sense to happen.

I think we need an attacking left back. Unlike recent years, all of our best players seem to play best through the middle and the wingers are amongst the least reliable members of the squad. Coentrao patrolling the left with a roaming left midfielder (Kagawa or Januzaj) ahead of him would be fantastic.

Do Real Madrid have cover for Marcelo though? Can't see this happening unless they do.

Like us, they went late for a left back at the end of the window but it all happened too late. Can't remember who. A Spaniard I know, perhaps he was their youth product. I'm sure they'll be able to get him again. Teams or players don't simply say no to Real and Barca.

It was Guilherme Siqueira from Granada who instead went on loan to Benfica. Seems a bit of a weird one, but maybe he chose to go where he'd play more games rather than be Marcelo's backup. According to the wiki entry Benfica have a price to buy him, so Real would need to find someone else

Mourinho used him in most of Barca games because he was better in the back than Marcelo.

I think he'd be an ideal long-term replacement for Evra, particularly considering his relatively young age and the current availability of left backs possessing similar qualities. I feel that the points raised pertaining to supposed shortcomings defensively are a bit exaggerated. I think he's good at marking wingers and he's far better at maintaining positional discipline than what we've been accustomed to for the last three or four seasons. His desire to join attacks and contribute meaningfully as a wide option will be another critical value that he can add to our team. Nonetheless, I highly doubt that Madrid would be willing to let go of him in the middle of the season without initially securing appropriate cover for Marcelo. Besides, I would be very surprised if the same negotiating team that managed to squander our best opportunity to sign suitable players needed for glaringly deficient positions actually pull off the acquisition of Coentrao during the improbable winter transfer period.

Madrid had Siqueira on hold until 11 on deadline day waiting for us to confirm the Coentrao deal. We sent through the paperwork just before midnight. Madrid tried to get him Siqueira but the player and Benfica had got tired of waiting.

I guess we were still trying for Baines and that's why we were so late.

Mourinho used him in most of Barca games because he was better in the back than Marcelo.

This is a myth. Both started in a similar number of games. And at times, Mourinho used Marcelo at left back while Coentrao was shifted to right back/central midfield.

He's a good player, but best decision is to leave Real Madrid. He's had a hard time at the club. Come to United, Concentrao.

iirc They play Arbeloa there if Marcelo is out. Cavajal plays on the right.

They do, but their overall defensive cover is a bit thin. Varane's been injured for most of the season. Arbeloa has had to play left, right and centre back (not necessarily at the same time :)) this season, due to injuries and suspensions.

Maybe we can lend them Fabio (and Buttner and Valencia and Anderson). Actually lending them a young player like Fabio isn't as odd as it might sound. They'd be able to play him in the reserves and use him for first team cover.

I wonder if Mourinho will try to arrange a Cole/Coentrao loan swap?

Would be a great signing... been a while since I've seen him play but his got a lot of the modern day full back attributes and would be a good fit for the PL I think.

I haven't seen him much for RM, but every time I watch Portugal he always stands out as one of their better players, comfortable in possession, fast, nice left foot, creative.

At 25 he'd be a much better choice than Baines, even cheaper as well. Maybe he and Nani can make something happen down that left hand side.

Ed, do it.

Would be a good signing on loan in my opinion and gives us the chance to think about who we want to buy in the summer.

Man United target Fabio Coentrao wants Real Madrid CF exit - report
Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao, who continues to be linked with Manchester United, is reportedly ready to quit the Spanish giants this month.

Coentrao, who last summer was also linked with Chelsea and Tottenham, nearly secured a season-long loan move to Man Utd on transfer deadline day, only for his proposed switch to Old Trafford to fall through at the start of September due to the transfer window closing before the deal could be finalised.

Los Blancos coach Carlo Ancelotti had admitted that the Portugal international wanted to quit the Bernabeu, although the player himself later claimed he was more than happy that a move to Manchester had fallen through.

However, according to AS, Coentrao is once again looking for a way out of Madrid during this month's transfer window.

Coentrao, who is close to returning to full fitness following a hamstring injury, had said last year: "There was the possibility of joining Manchester United, but I stayed at Real Madrid, and that’s what matters.

"It would have been bad if I had to stay despite having the chance to move to a better club, but that didn’t happen as I already am at the best club in the world.

"I want to do better than I did last season, although I was at a very high level already. I want to show everyone that I deserve to be at Real Madrid."
Might be a goer.

Using old quotes. Not sure about this one. It would make sense, but it seems too quiet.

Some of these figures seem a bit pricey for buying a cognac.

He would be a huge improvement on the current Evra, can play in midfield (as a utility player, not suggesting he is our solution there), & is both younger, and better, than Baines. Like someone already said, i'd actually like him here just so it meant we didn't get Baines (in my opinion a short term solution, who has his defensive flaws overlooked because he is English & does not venture forward unless crossing early). I do remember lots of rumours last summer suggesting Coentrao was quite desperate to come here, although you never know without quotes from the player himself.
