Fabio Coentrao

with Coentrao in and our big amount of good CB's, we could use some Bielsa tactics as a back up plan at times

solid as rock and quick on the counter

Nah DM is a solid back four type

Bielsa's system was never based on three centre halves, it was based on two centre halves and a defensive midfielder capable of dropping deep to defend when full backs joined the attack and distribute the ball from the back (Martinez at Athletic, I think either Vidal or Medel at Chile). Jones could potentially be that player but I feel his passing isn't sufficient.

Fellaini.

I didnt see enough of Athletic, but with Chile, most of the games he started with 3 CB... Medel-Contreras-Jara or Medel-Ponce-Jara... 3-5-2 or 3-4-3... only against teams that attacked with a front line of 3, he would swap into a 4-3-3.

Anyway, we have a team that could afford try alternatives... not bad idea to have some surprises up our sleeve... feck it, is not happenning.

He asked to leave and then was set to join us on loan, he has to say that now because he's a Madrid player until January at least.

Isn't there some sort of loan window or something?

Can we still sort out a loan deal or is it definitely off?

Oh right, the issue is that RM don't have a replacement, so why would they even entertain a loan of a player in a position where they need him as they don't have cover? It would be like us loaning out Carrick without having anyone else to do his job.

I believe the loan window is only open to clubs in the Championship or lower?

Remember that time that player said he'd rather sell peanuts than play for Chelsea? Eto'o, words and actions are often different.

In fairness he has a rich fish-selling background, so the transition to peanuts probably wouldn't be too difficult for him.

Watched him closely when playing against Northern Ireland on friday night. A bit worrying that he was being skinned repeatedly by Aberdeens Niall McGinn, hardly a household name.
True enough, although McGinn's ramped up his game a lot in the last year or two and was essentially the difference between Aberdeen finishing mid-table and a few points off relegation.

Not worrying at all. Coentrao is a world class left back and I'd rather - if we went in for a left back - bought him instead of Baines. Long term wise, it would be a better option.

Yeah.. I mean.. Baines got showed up by Downing not too long ago.

I mean................

Downing.

Seriously. Downing.

He's been out for over two months with what was initially described as a "two week" injury.

He hasn't traveled with Madrid today - they play PSG in a friendly in Doha tomorrow.

Everything seems to point to him wanting to leave and Madrid being happy to sell. However that doesn't square with reports that he's renewed his contract with Madrid. Personally I suspect the renewal was a gift to Mendes for resolving Ronaldo's renewal, or that there was something in his old contract (a much reduced release clause due to lack of games perhaps?) that forced the issue.

Of course, his injuries (if they are injuries) are worrying as is his mentality (if they aren't injuries)

He's played 4 league games this season and been an expensive waste of money for Madrid, but I think they'll be keen to get most of the money back on him as he's clearly got some ability and he's only 25. I think it would be a big gamble to go for him (depending on price) but I also thought that about Yaya Toure when he was out in the cold never getting a game at Barcelona. While the pay off wouldnt be half as good as it has been City taking a chance on Yaya, if we signed him and he got back to his best he'd be a good left back for us.

Another thing is he was one of Mourinho's men in Madrid if I recall correctly. On the boss's side of the fence in a torn dressing room. So maybe Chelsea will go for him to replace Cole

He'd fit in well here

Still my #1 desired replacement for Evra. If he's available there is no reason at all we shouldn't be in for him.

Adnan and Coentrao down the left will tear any defence apart.

He's also excellent going forward. Him and Rafael back would be adding some serious weight to our attacks.

Real pulled out at the last minute as their planned replacement moved to another club.

They put Coentrao in the shop window the entire summer with the replacement lined up but United didn't move for him until near the end. Replacement didn't think he'd move to Madrid so he moved elsewhere.

Yup! Should have just gone for him right off the bat rather than making eyes at Baines all summer.
