Fabio Coentrao

Even if we did it at the beginning of the day (which none of us know if we actually did), if Real won't loan to us without a replacement, then they won't loan. It is as simple as that.

No it's not. Coentrao is unhappy. Their replacement would be thrilled at joining Real. Stupid to get him though whilst there are no bids for Coentrao.

I'm sure that if the Coentrao deal would have been done early then Real would have wrapped up their replacement very soon after.

And that's what I alluded to earlier, I'm sure. As a club our valuations are well behind the times.

Berbatov, at something like 30.75 million, is our transfer record. In today's market thats not hard to beat.

According to transfermarket.co.uk 10 players in this transfer window went for more then £30M. Bale, Cavani, Falcao, Neymar, Özil, James Rodriguez, Fernandinho, Wilian, Götze, Higuain and I think they have the wrong eveluation of Illarramendi and Isco deals who I remember to be above €30M with Illarramendi much closer to €40M so those two probably belong in there as well.

Regardless of the failed transfer, I find it very interesting that we tried to get Coentrao. We don't have a great need for a left-back, and if we do it is merely (you would think) because Evra has played a hell of a lot of football in the last few years. He could do with some opportunites to rest, and perhaps some competition wouldn't hurt him, but we wouldn't really expect to have a player like Evra on the bench.

The Baines link was not unexpected but we can overlook the obvious complications of how to play them both because we know that Moyes knows him well and obviously rates him. That factor gave the approach some logic. The fact that he then went looking for a different left-back suggests to me that he doesn't fancy Evra all that much. I would be surprised if Evra didn't look at it the same way.

Whaddya mean? He was basically available the whole summer. I guess maybe they wanted to use him as bait for Spurs.

Seems clear he was our backup if Baines fell through.

Ah. I wasn't aware they were trying to shift him.

Illarramendi was 32m Euros, about £27m.
Isco was cheaper, 25m Euros, rising to 30m Euros (about £25m) with bonuses.

Sportsdirect being typically reliable, mixing up the Herrera and Coentrao stories .

Does the loan window not reopen soon at some point? If so could we not go for him then?

He's not getting a look in at the minute, he hasn't even been in the squad for any of Real's first 3 matches. The Champions League is what we're worried about, Marcelo will no doubt keep his LB position, but in games against Copenhagen he may be drafted in. It looks like Carvajal & Arbeloa are also favourites of Ancelotti's for the FB positions at the minute - it's a long way off, but if he keeps out of the squad til Jan the move may be back on.

I hope we do go back for him. Even if he isn't available for Europe. Would allow us to rest Evra before the big champions league games.

Yeah, all clubs should obey the big Man United in their plan B tentatives that come in deadline day.

I think it takes a special type of gimp to deduce that from my post. Kudos.

But if United had approached Real with this deal a few days ago instead of focusing on Baines, it would have given Real time to get in a suitable replacement.

Not completely the clubs fault, but they certainly have to shoulder some of the blame.

Well obviously we wanted Baines more. He was clearly the number one target in that position.

We could get him on loan or even sign him permanently in January. It would give us the chance to rest Evra before CL games. I can also see us going back for Herrera in January if we need him.

Is there a separate loan window?

If Madrid get their replacement left back in January, then we might as well move for Coentrao then. Doesn't matter much if he is cup tied, Evra can play in Europe.

It might help if we could sign him on loan. Next summer we can actually sign him as replacement for Evra. He is only 25. He could be the ideal player to take over from Evra.

He's in the Champions league squad, so even if we did sign him we couldn't play him in the UCL. would still be extremely useful in the second half of the EPL.

Which position did you finish in your group Nostradamus? I can make a killing on Betfair!

He's very good. I'd much rather we got him, for probably around the same price that Everton were supposedly wanting for Baines. Just doesn't seem to fit at Madrid. Hard to believe they payed 30m euros for him a couple of years back.

They paid that much because he had a very good WC. And also he was much better than Marcelo but since then Marcelo has made a lot of progress and taken back the starting position from Coentrao.

Given that Evra's contract runs out next summer I think buying, rather than loaning, Contreao in January would be a good move.

Haven't really though to much about this one, but on reflection, I'm a bit gutted this fell through. Would have been very useful to have in the squad.

I'd say it's near-certain that we'll loan him in January and then sign him next summer. I wonder how much Real will make us pay for him, considering the obscene fee they paid to get him.

They valued him at £15m when they included him in the Bale deal, and his contract is only going to wind down further.

We'll top the group, I don't know why you're acting like it's the most difficult group ever. It's not outrageous to predict that we will make it past the group stages ffs.

If we wait until the summer though there's the World Cup and I could see things getting messy. It would be better to do a concrete deal in January IMO.

He'll probably get back into Madrid's team in place of Marcelo, who's no great shakes.

I don't know why your lot didn't go for him earlier, he is only 25 compared to Baines who is turning 29 in a few months. I don't know defensively but he is brilliant in attack.

with Coentrao in and our big amount of good CB's, we could use some Bielsa tactics as a back up plan at times
