Fabio Coentrao

In the telegraph tomorrow they are saying the deal will be done. Good news if true, and would be surprising to see so soon after Moyes' comments

Link? Source?

Usually when Real Madrid want to sell someone, Marca have some idea. So either The Mirror has really pulled up a major story here or it's all complete horse manure.

A mirror story with no quotes.. Not the most credible

£12million would be a steal in this market. I don't think Madrid would sell him for close to that.

Did you get that from that Sam Rhodes twitter account? It's a fake account - he doesn't work at the telegraph and the profile image is a stock one.

Actually no, not this time, I avoid that account at all times. I may be wrong as someone else has reported it, but he doesn't seem to be one to read into fake accounts. Although he could be calling this one wrong too.

EDIT: Ah shit, the guy just said he got done by the fake account, he just put up the mirror article instead of the telegraph one too.

I think Baines is the better LB but in terms of looking at the whole picture, I think Coentrao would be a far better buy than Baines. Would like to see it happen but can't see it happening to be honest.

Also, Evra was a January signing, just get it done Woody, it makes so much more sense than Baines.

£12 million straight up or a loan with an argeed fee up to about £15 million we can pay at any time would be the sensible way to do it.

£12 million if true is a fecking bargain, hope we move fast if that is the case. Before someone else does.

The £12m (€15m ) is based on the idea that Madrid are willing to sell him at half price which has been the figure (leaked to the Spanish press) kicking around since August. As far as the Madrid media are concerned, nothing's changed, Coentrao never settled and has wanted to leave for the past 18 months. They now think he's getting sulkier by the day in a bid to show Ancelotti he's expendable.

The only issue for Madrid, as far as I can tell, is that they need more defensive cover. Milan are apparently interested in him. The great unknown is whether we are.

There are mutterings about an "English club" but some of them reckon it's Chelsea. I wonder if Madrid want a loan deal for Cole in return?

I don't understand. It's plainly obvious why someone would not want to go on record as saying "my client/I/my brother (etc) wants to leave" and if they did carry quotes from a 'source' then the criticism would be exactly the same.

I'm not saying the story is true but it is incredible when people, even in this day and age knowing media handling as we do, completely dismiss any story that doesn't have cited, direct quotes. It's odd how only football stories are subject to this. If we've heard that a leaked report has said that a MP has fiddled his expenses, who says or even thinks "No direct quote? Utter shite!!"?

The threshold at which we judge the veracity of football stories is silly. Yes it may not be true or it may be but no quotes or no direct citation of them doesn't mean a thing.

i m still not convinced. He hasn t played for some time,so it will take him even more to settle down, not to mention his defending

Well according to Moyes we are not buying in January. It's off again, to no thread....because there is no hope....all hope is lost....

Let's buy him and then we can claim Real Madrid are our feeder club.

Why on earth is he rated so highly on here?

If we sign him, I'd like him to play as a left winger rather than a left back for us.

 to no thread. Would you like to create the thread thst we can all go to, to cry in together. Not just you and me obviously.

Wow, I'm shocked at this post. Firstly the point was also that its the Mirror i.e. a terrible newspaper. They come out with literally thousands of these rumours every year and only a handful turn out to be true. Football stories are often doubted because the standard of journalism is all too often appalling, most people acknowledge this is particularly true in the transfer window. I don't know where you live or if you are familiar with the British press but that is just the way it is. We'll be linked with twenty odd players this window and we'll see how many result in deals.

'Quotes doesn't mean a thing' is ludicrous, of course they do. Whilst they don't guarantee the truth they add to a its credibility, hence why journalists try to use them.

Your comparison to an MP fiddling his expenses is just wrong. Accusations such as that would not be printed without supporting evidence, they would be immediately sued for defamation. It's incredible you think that is the way the press operates. Also if you would believe an accusation such as that without any evidence then that is something you need to rethink.

Maybe because not everyone agrees with your opinion?

I, for example, think he's a very good defender and indeed a better defender than Evra has ever been. Like most fullbacks playing in an aggressive attacking team, he struggles sometimes with the dual role of supporting his winger (who's often Ronaldo) and being a full back. But if you look at him when Madrid are on the back foot or Portugal's games against Sweden
he's a good defender who can play football as well. In more open games he contributes well to the attack.

My concern is about the injuries and whether he'd settle in Manchester, having never adapted to Madid.

I like him, but I don't see him as a massive upgrade to Evra and for me Evra at his peak was the better player.

But it would be lovely having a left back to compete with Evra and share the role.

If the price is accurate and he is over his fitness issues it would be a steal

Sounds like you haven't seen him play much. None of probably see him on a weekly basis but he has undoubtedly put in some great displays in the past for Portugal/Madrid.

Given the appalling nature of Evra's performances it's not hard to see why everyone's keen to see him here.

I have seen him play, not weekly but enough to have an opinion over him. As Randall said, I don't think he's a bigger upgrade than Evra.

"Real Madrid are not planning to add to their squad or sell any players in the January transfer window, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Thursday"

You don't think he's better than Evra at this moment in time? Really?

I've only seen him play a few times, but he's impressed me every time. Strikes me as fullback with the perfect balance of defensive abilities, lung busting runs, and offensive flair.

I could be terribly wrong though. But if we're gonna sign a fullback to replace Evra, then I want it to be someone under 28. The only skilled leftbacks who meets this criteria that I know of, is Coentrao and Nagatomo.

He isn't as good as Evra in his pomp, but sadly Evra is no longer in his pomp. He struggles to get back in these days, and seems to have concentration issues. In fairness we've absolutely ran him into the ground, but left back is an area we need something at, and Coentrao is a very good one.

Anyone know Peter Velland? And is he a reliable Spanish football expert? Or is he just another Ballbags :(

He says Coentrao could move, if that gives anyone some light hope.

Never heard of Velland, who does he work for?

AS and most of the Spanish press think Coentrao still wants to leave.

But Ancelotti can't let him leave until he's got more defensive cover. Right now they've got Arbeloa, Ramos, Pepe and Marcelo - the only real backup they've got is Carvajal, and they shuffle Arbeloa and Ramos around to cover the gaps. Varane is still injured. Coentrao has only just started training with the team.

If Madrid can get reasonable money for him and get cover in, then I think he'll be allowed to leave. However, I doubt Ancelotti would sell him until he's got someone in and there aren't any names of replacements in the Spanish press.

Seems to be a La Liga expert for a Norwegian show. Anyway it may be a bit of light, but could another Tancredi Palmolive or Ballbags just feeding us shite. It makes sense for Real to sell should they find a suitable replacement, as Coentrao is first team quality but not getting game time, wasted really. He's much better defensively than Evra, and would definitely be more solid than him.

Pretty much the only left back in the world who could replace evra in his pomp properly would be alaba, and since there is no chance for that, coentrao is a very good replacement like you said. Think he's somewhat similar to evra going forward as in he is fantastic at linking up with his winger, which evra is probably the best around at.

Evra came to us at the age Coentrao is now and it wasn't until 3 years later when he was at his very best. He definitely has the potential to be the best fullback in the league, IMO.

Has this nickname taken off? I started that one.

Oh sweet, sweet validation.

Coentrao is a fantastic defender and it would be a great signing for us. It would be a dream replacement for Evra.
