Fabio Coentrao

Baines is a far bigger threat going forward than either of those players, IMO. The only thing they probably have on him is pace.

I usually agree with your opinions but there is no way Baines is a bigger threat going forward than Coentrão. Coentrão was actually a winger at Rio Ave and early stages of his Benfica career. A very attacking one, with a decent repertoire of dribbles and ability to go past opponents with pace and skill. Then Jorge Jesus converted him into a left back in a an attacking minded setup where the full backs were crucial in the offensive manouvers. The result was that he became the best left back in the league, an essencial member of our national team (best left back in the last 30 years) and earned a Real Madrid transfer. His influence in our national team in what concerns our attacking threat (even though he is a left back) is only second to Ronaldo and Nani. Baines is better at set pieces and crossing but Coentrão is also a very decent crosser.

He's reliable both going forward and staying back, something we have lacked on the left for years now. Last night was a great game for him, and he shut out Robben 9 times out of 10, beaten once by him and Ribery if I recall. If we don't get Shaw, then he should really be our next option, and a much cheaper one at that.

His performances against Bayern and Barcelona in recent months have restored my faith in his performance levels after looking not so good earlier in the season. They've also reinforced the fact he wont come cheap. He's been as good as or better than Marcelo and nothing has changed. Madrid will want most of the fee they paid for him

If they do sell him and for whats likely a fairly big fee considering what he cost, people keep telling me Chelsea need a leftback. Mourinho was the manager when Madrid made him the most expensive leftback in history and Mourinho rated him highly enough to even use him in central midfield. So Chelsea would have to be favourites

Coentrao would be a good signing for us though, its just unlikely unless we are willing to outspend the other teams for him and that doesn't seem to be on the cards

Yeah he did but their relationship was problematic. Mourinho had some disciplinary problems with Coentrão (was reported they had an argument when Mourinho caught him smoking or saw some pics, was something like that). He questioned his professionalism and Coentrão was even punished by being out of the team for a while. Also when Mourinho had problems with Ronaldo and Pepe, Coentrão took heir side against Mourinho. I don´t think he will move for Coentrão at all.

When asked about Coentrao, he said: "I don't want Portuguese players.

"I always had them, but I think in this moment it's enough. Only Hilario is the remaining one and we don't need (others)."

I guess that rules him out actually. And all Portuguese players

This site saying we are in advanced talks.

Translation:

Fabio Coentrao, Real Madrid side, seems finally opt for the offer from Manchester United. The Portuguese player also has offers from Italian Calcio among which include the Inter Milan. The neroazzurro team is looking for experienced defenses next season and Coentrao is one of the most liked it further adds rebound.
The agent Coentrao will meet in the coming weeks with leaders Manchester United for details of the offer and finally decide whether to accept or not. The first contact has been very positive, so it looks like it will close unless Coentro to strive to have some not mentioned in the same clause. Patrice Evra will have serious competition for the first time in a long time in that lefty lane which has owned over the last decade.

Never heard of Fichajes before, how reliable are they? Sounds like BS to me.

Coentrao would be a great signing, and I still think it's possible as I think Real like Moreno.

They only needed Marcelo to turn up in Anderson to figure out how much better player Coentrao is than him.

He's supposed to have signed a new deal, but I just had to post this link, from that bastion of ITK football and transfer news, the Dorking & Leatherhead Advertiser:

Long-term Manchester United target Fábio Coentrão, 26, is on the verge of signing a lucrative contract extension at Real Madrid, meaning Louis van Gaal will most likely increase his interest in Southampton’s Luke Shaw, 18.

Coentrão was in fine form for Los Blancos in the second half of their Champions League-winning season, and looks set to be rewarded with a huge contract.

After his consistent performances kept Marcelo out of the side, Florentino Pérez looks to have tied him down to a new deal as quickly as he could.

If we're going to sign a second leftback, Coentrao makes much more sense than Rodriguez, given his ability to play midfield as well.

If we went back for Herrera, perhaps Coentrao could be back on our radar?

He'd cost too much surely for a backup left back plus isn't the youngest.

Not sure Madrid wanna sell him anyway. They don't exactly rely on Marcelo that much particularly Ancelotti.

He was meant to be a budget option in January - but figures over 20m have been quoted for Ricardo Rodriguez.

Did he force his way into Madrid's side from January on? He was all set to come to United on deadline day until their replacement fell through, figured he was on the outs.

See above. He is signing a new contract and he kept Marcelo out the team for the second part of the season.

I don't think Ancelotti trusts Marcelo defensively.
