F1 2024 Season

That's why you usually see them picking up rubber and dirt on the cool-down lap. Spa is the only track on the schedule without a cool down lap because of the track length / layout though.
Wasn't aware of that.

I'm pretty sure I read that they could fit new tyres to re-weigh it to take away the tyre wear issue, it was still under the minimum.

A F1 tire weighs about 13kg, so the 4 of them 52kg. I don't think it's beyond the possible that they lose 2% during a race. However anyone building a F1 car should take that into account. I was joking to a friend yesterday that he should have gone through the gravel once in the cool down lap.
But he had originally been planned for a two-stop race, right? So they might not have expected his final set of tires to wear as much as they did. But then that 1.5kg would have come from the extra wear of a dozen or so laps - seems excessive.

..and then this. So I guess the most obvious assumption is still that Mercedes were cheating with the weight of the car.

Just a thought - do you think Lewis is regretting switching to Ferrari considering how well the Merc's have been performing these last few races?
Who knows? Short of a Mercedes driver winning or being in contention for winning the 2025 WDC, we won't know.

It would some story if Hamilton can win title no8 in a Ferrari and break the record he holds jointly with Schumacher.

Also no-one has won 3 WDC titles with three different teams since fangio in the 1950s. It would be a massive achievement. I doubt it will happen. Personally more chance of him winning no8 in a Mercedes in the next few years.

But it's good for the sport to see Hamilton in a Ferrari. Just as it will be good for the sport to see Verstappen in a different car one day.

I think other reasons aside - Tsunoda going to Red Bull is basically dead now that the partnership with Honda is ending and Ford is coming in.
I said it before and I will stand by it, the most important attribute a RedBull no2 driver can have, is to be able to drive a car setup to oversteer as max wants it. Otherwise they will go the way of Perez, albon, gasly etc.

Re: George Russell. I don't know why Russell leaves me cold/apathetic. I think he has more talent than Lando Norris as a driver (although neither will be in the truely elite club).

I think as someone else said, he just comes across as smug and self entitled. It maybe different when Hamilton joins Ferrari, but even then I think I would be rooting for antonelli to beat Russell in qually and in races.

Who would you say has the same style?

Closest to Verstappen, is Leclerc, both can handle a car with extreme oversteer and be rapid.

Though as for a realistic number 2, who has the same style? I'm out of my depth on that. Maybe someone in F2? I don't know enough about Liam Lawson's driving style to know if he can.

Rumours flying around that Perez will remain at Red Bull for the rest of the season.

Apparently staff at RedBull HQ were told he's staying on for rest of the season.

Whether he is still there next season ? Who knows.

Red Bull deserve to lose the constructors on the basis of that weak ass decision. What happened to that ruthless team that binned Albon and Gasly.

Don't think it will pay off until 2026, he's smart boy Lewis, everyone questioned his move to Mercedes which in the end arguably made him the GOAT.

Why are RB so desperate to keep Perez? He's been woeful and could cost them the constructors

Is it literally because he brings in a tonne of sponsorship?

Everyone should be wanting Antonelli to beat Princess George, and Piastri to beat Mardy Lando.

Scenes if Max does go to Merc after he might have turned down the option to go to RB while he is there.
Don't think Sainz had much of a choice. Mercedes won't give him the spare seat. RedBull won't give him Perez's seat. Audi project is a mess and behind schedule. Alpine are trying to get their house in order to sell up and exit F1.

That leaves Williams, or take a massive risk with no guarantee of a seat in 2025 that RedBull or Mercedes change their mind.

Shit load of sponsorship. Shed load of merchandising sales. Also max likes him as a no2.

RedBull are in F1 to sell cans of RedBull. Don't have the number of cans sold in 05 when they joined F1, but in 2011 it was 4 billion cans worldwide. Last year it was 12.5 billion cans worldwide. So despite Perez being useless they are still increasing their year on year sales.

So being cynical, I think it was looked at on a numbers i.e. $$$ calculation not his F1 ability or lack there of.

Probably need that sponsorship morey to pay the highest paid driver in F1. Don't think are any official figures out there but he must be bringing in some serious money.

The Oracle sponsorship deal was signed at the same time as renewing Verstappens contract and if i recall correctly the amounts were pretty much the same.

It sucks potential exciting young drivers are being kept out of seats by average drivers just because they bring in loads of money

Isn't there a term pay driver? Who are they?

Maybe the bigger picture is of the Mexican race, the adulation he gets no matter how poorly he does, the amount of Mexicans in the US watching as well, the global roster of tracks and drivers. Even if he improves a little bit it would be enough to keep the constructors out of reach, seems the team are waiting for it to happen.

Red Bull would have to choose carefully, Sainz can be very fast as seen early on this season and as a team mate with Lando, he's probably too good for second driver.

Apparently the fronts weigh 9.5kg and the rears 11.5kg, so 42kg in total. The question is if Mercedes either miscalculated the projected final weight of the tires when they decided to go for the one stop or if they knew they would be low and just crossed their fingers and went for it anyway.

It would be a bit funny if they aced the calculations and knew they'd be just over the limit with a full in-lap collecting pick up and simply forgot that's not a thing at Spa.

Did you not hear the news yesterday? Sainz has gone to Williams.

This wouldn't be unreasonable, given the choice of finishing 5/6 and rolling the dice for a win, every team and driver would go for the win.

1.5kg is a lot of weight, a typical bag of flour at the supermarket.

On the BBC:
A 1.5kg reduction in weight would give a lap-time advantage in the region of 0.05-0.06secs, or 2.3-2.6secs or so over a race distance.

If it was down to excessive tyre wear, I'd guess Russell dipped below the weight with around 15 laps left?, Maybe gained up to a second assuming at lap 10 he was within the weight limit when putting the hard tyres on and some point beyond that. Of course some under fueling or forgetting inlap rubber pickup is a consideration.

Did you not hear the news yesterday? Sainz has gone to Williams.

Yes I was responding more in general to people suggesting Sainz or that caliber of driver.

To be fair plenty of pay drivers/terrible F1 drivers did quite well in F3 and F2

Latifi, De Vries, Mick, Stroll, Kvyat etc
Yes… Mick Schumacher who Helmut said should still be in F1 was overrated. Make no mistake, Mick’s time in F1 was hampered by that clown Gunther and not his ability. Also, Ferrari putting him in that team and not Alfa was another shit house decision.

Notwithstanding points, he beat K-Mag head to head in 2022… Nothing wrong with his speed.

Okay Ralf, so it's Steiner's fault Mick crashed 10 cars or something? Also amusing how you exclude the actual metric invented to compare drivers during the course of the WDC

I fear Mick has had his chance in F1. It wasn't a good one, in a team led by a clown, but I don't see him getting another soon. He should have gone racing somewhere and won stuff (long distance or even Indi) after losing his seat instead of just waiting around for the next chance. Was glad to see him start at Le Mans this year, but he will need a lot more starts to have a 24h race go his way. I'd be happy if I'm proven wrong.
