Lots of posturing from all sides. Everyone involved are just looking for more money with no care about football or fans. Some compromise will come out of it with big clubs getting bigger share of pie. Everyone will walk away as winners.

Effectively gets around FFP in a legal way but for every team in the competition also. It's a case of "we couldn't beat them, so we joined them"

There won't be any real difference though.

Say all clubs get 500m a for joining, City still have the richest owners on top of that.

Isn't the appeal of the CL the fact that these teams don't play each other every season?

This is the first time IIRC that Chelsea have played Madrid in years or at all. Then there is also the running history behind these games, the European "rivalries" you don't get every season. People still talk about those Madrid vs United games that Ronaldo dominated or the Bayern v Barcelona match ups.

That is going to be lost if you have Madrid vs Man Utd every season, twice a season.

You do know that UEFA is suggesting a complete revamp of the CL format beginning from 24...Introducing a league, with a shitload of matches, instead of group stages.

What conspiracy? I think you're reading far too much into what I said. I'm talking about taking a healthy scepticism towards the current outrage on display on Sky.

Along with Sky, Neville has a vested interest as he works for Sky and he invests in a lower league team.
He does. But he is still right.

People in here saying football is nothing without fans.

There's not a person on this forum that wouldn't pay £30 a month for ONE subscription to watch elite football on a weekly basis.

Reuters: Sir Alex Ferguson: "Talk of a Super League is a move away from 70 years of European club football."

Not to mention the money-spinning friendlies.

I’m assuming it will end up being an extra competition we are in? Probably a cup competition? Doesn’t seem like the end of the world but I guess we need to wait for an announcement.
I would imagine that it would be an initial step to breaking off from domestic competitions. At some point they would want to be on at the weekends to get the largest viewing figures and would decide that playing Burnley doesn't sound that appealing when you can play Barcelona 4 times a year.

Being against this isn't because you're pro Fifa or UEFA. It is because of how it would affect the fans, suddenly your club becomes some brand that has no connection to English football and plays for the highest bidder. How long would it be before these Super League games are being played in some huge money state instead of their home grounds.

I am Spartacus. I'm not going anywhere near this bullshit if it goes through, 'and you can quote me on it'.

I'm against this completely, but I can see such a fundamental flaw in the league that will make it fail.

The teams that are proposedly entering, often win silverware in their respective leagues which give them such a big following. The majority of supporters follow teams that win consistently when they are young and build a bond to that team. I get there are a number of fans who do support local and don't care about the winning etc, but a lot of people simply do.

If you now had all these teams entering 1 league, how often would their fans see their club raise the trophy? Seriously - Real / Barca / Athletico / Bayern / City / Chelsea etc etc all fighting for one trophy...their fans would not accept it. They'd see teams like Leicester / Leverkussen etc win domestic leagues while their history gets eroded over time.

Nor would we see the rivalries we have become accustomed to over time.

Can see someone wants to do it, so many things against it.

Just revamp the champions league folks

True, which obviously would kill the spectacle. At the same time I’d enjoy us waving two fingers at the FA. I can’t see it being a good idea mind.

Yeah but the big teams won't mind if they're also getting a big whack of the money instead of watching Pep spend £1b on full backs and they're having to shop in the bargain bin

Kick off times are irrelevant, people are moaning about Friday night kick offs, people just like to moan.

A small point, but kick off times are not irrelevant at all. Even with Europe, depending on where you're from some of the especially late ones are antisocial. Before we ended up in a Thursday - Sunday cycle, I was a season ticket holder at my local team, but kick offs at half fecking ten at night are piss take unless that fits your culture. Feck knows how those on the other side of the world (don't 12-hour pedant me) cope.

I doubt this will actually happen for a variety of reasons but the hypocrisy of Sky and the PL is highly amusing.

In the unlikely event it does happen it’ll probably be the final straw for me.

How would it make Sky and the PL hypocrites?

I struggle to understand the pearl clutching, the PL and the FA don't deserve any loyalty from us given the awful way they've treated us many times in the past.

Having said that, it does take away the special feeling of big European nights if we're doing it every season without fail.

One benefit, probably wouldn't have to play Burnley again
My only hope out of this utter feckwittery is that it’ll die of death and the glazer cnuts will think they’ve milked the feck out of us and sell up.

I’m so shocked at the people who seem to be accepting for this. I’m so fecking annoyed with the idea I need to get get off here.

Yep, like football before 92 never existed.

UEFA need to reap what they sow, they expanded the CL and turned it into a money-chasing competition.

Do you really think players would choose to play in the more and more increasingly irrelevant international games, instead of trousering 250-300k or more in an even richer world?
Your underestimating the appeal of playing in a WC.

It would also change the PL product, part of the drama these days is the "top 4 battle", especially when you have run away leaders, so removing the necessity to finish in those spots could make the ends of seasons a lot less interesting and engaging so they wont want their product tarnished.

This is sure, all the games would be played in dubai or quatar

Who are these big teams who are currently shopping in the bargain bin?

True, which obviously would kill the spectacle. At the same time I’d enjoy us waving two fingers at the FA. I can’t see it being a good idea mind.

I mean, the FA were against the formation of the European Cup 'as it would damage the integrity of the English game', refused to adjust kick off times and threatened to ban us from the league if we delayed a kick off (bearing in mind that air travel was more difficult back then)

Maybe (hopefully) they just bit off more than they could chew this time?

I think UEFA will back down and find a middle ground. They'd also be ruined without the elite clubs. It's a mess at moment, but I doubt the owners did this on a whim.

I have mixed feelings about this.
Many people were saying the same about the PL. But it has been a huge success.
However, I really don't like the concept of fixed leagues with no relegation. By the sound of it, it could become stale.
Anyway, we are in a rapidly changing world, so we will see how it all pans out.

I believe that is next in line personally

Because they both make bank from a competition formed as a breakaway that has caused enormous damage to the leagues below, and they take every opportunity to rip fans off for every penny they can.

They’re only outraged because they sense financial ruin
