Do you want the ESL to happen?

Luis Figo: "This so-called Super League is anything but Super. This greedy and callous move would spell disaster for our grassroots, for women's football and the wider football community"

I think the players are already finding it so hard to manage the number of games they have to play over the season. As Sir Alex said, the format has worked for over 65 years. Why go and do something that will be a disgrace in the name of Super League. Regardless of it being midweek fixtures or a way to get teams out of their respective leagues with a payout like 3.5Billion, it is a stupid idea and it will truly kill football as we know it.

Fans like many on here who oppose this are in the minority.

The 'average' football fan just wants to watch the biggest games and the biggest stars, they don't care about Burnley v Newcastle.

The ESL is probably a mouthwatering prospect to 80% of football fans worldwide. Possibly more.

If they come out and say you can subscribe to Amazon for x amount a month and watch it all there will be billions interested.

You just like the idea, no point making stuff up is there. 80% says who? You, because you like it, just own it, you want to watch just big teams each week. Looking around football twitter, forums of other teams, its mostly negative. Most will still watch it obviously, but the backlash is vast.

a but suprised to see all the outrage. other than lack of relegation/promotion system, which can be fixed later
How can you fix it later when 12 clubs have it enshrined they are protected from relegation? When those 12 clubs make the rule?

This is why, as an American, I recognize there is a hierarchy when it comes to fans.

I remember being attracted to European football because of the passion of the fanbases of each club, and how that fed into the actual sport on the pitch.

The sport would be nothing without them and their clubs from non-league all the way to the highest levels. To dismiss 99% of football as irrelevant, in favor of overseas cnuts who "just want to see the best go at it every week" is an insult. I can't understand why sports fan would be for this.

Same. The sport would be nothing without those local fans being dismissed so casually as "legacy fans" (like what the feck??).
Great post

We have known this FOR YEARS.

Have I woken up on a parallel Earth? Why are people so up in arms over this all of a sudden? Have we not been owned by the Glazers for years? Did we not know what they’re like?

Neville tweeting about socialism whilst working for Sky and never criticising the City owners. Herrera playing for PSG complaining about money ruining the game. People who openly campaigned for the Saudis to buy our club kicking off.

Have I gone utterly mad? Of course this is a shit decision but it’s the latest in a long list. If you wanted the Saudi’s to take over us, if you haven’t been up in arms about PSG or City ruining the game how on Earth is this the straw that broke the camels back?
You're surprised that those of us who've been against every step of this are against this latest step too? I don't get it.

Porto, Bayern, Dortmund, Leipzig, *puke*PSG, so far clubs worthy of admiration.
PSG worthy of feck all. They are just too deep in UEFA/FIFA arse to risk their Qatar world cup, nothing more.

Personally, I would absolutely love an all-star game. I'll always be gutted we never saw Ronaldo and Messi play together, football has missed an opportunity there. The Lions tour in rugby is basically all-star and it's phenomenal. Fans would grow to care I guarantee that. I maintain, the proposal is corrupt, anti-competitive and nuclear but certainly wouldn't be boring.

What, a bunch of stars playing each other in a game where the outcome means nothing, and where everyone by common consent don't do things like tackles? Well, to each his own, I suppose.

It was naive on my part to imagine the Glazer scum as the main scum. They are all scum. There won't be a better opportunity to wrestle back control through European and government regulation to clear these scum out of the game. Like she says, FIFA and UEFA have opened the door to this, as have these different governments, and corruption is there at all levels. That doesn't mean you cannot change course though.

That Singer individual. I mean, it's easy to think everything negative possible in connection to him (and I do) but this is also the way countries behave, at the behest of small elites. A microcosm into how the world actually is.
i bet without even looking, and i cant because the inevitability will make me physically sick, that this Singer c**t is involved in a few high profile philanthropic ventures, with some celebrities involved and spends time with the gliteratti on both sides of the pond.

Yep. As I said .... "Yet you participate in society, how curious? I am intelligent"

All I will say is that the people who didn't think this is where we'd end up were probably somewhat naive to say the least. Doesn't mean you can't speak up about it though. Buying a few shirts and paying for Sky Sports doesn't rob you of your voice.

We should post that meme on every page of this thread.

Porto, Bayern, Dortmund, Leipzig, *puke*PSG, so far clubs worthy of admiration.

Piss off, they aren't worthy of nothing. They are a very large part of this whole mess being created.

All the millions sifted through UEFA and FIFA to get the World Cup and to beat FFP and now the competition is leaving them.

They fully deserve what they get.

Do you mean the fans watching it on tele or the fans having to travel around Europe to watch their team play in a league.
I mean it isn't going to make a massive difference to going to games, we would still play in the PL, and we would still play in europe. Which is exactly what we are doing currently.

As I've said there are 1000 reasons why this shouldn't happen, but anyone using 'boring' as a reason is simply wrong. These would be the best players and clubs competing against each other every week. That never will be boring I'm sorry if people cant see that through the rightful outrage.

It wouldn't be that much different to the current CL, except way more dead rubber games in the group stages and fixtures would feel less "unique" which would automatically make them feel less special

The knockout stages would almost be exactly the same... but again, fixtures would feel less special over time.

There is something incredibly amusing about United fans (rightfully) condemning the SL considering at it's heart, it's got the identical goals of FFP: maximise revenue for a handful of clubs at the top, keep those top clubs at the top and stop anyone else from joining the party. There is no question that's what SL is for. There is no question that's what FFP was for. They are different approaches to the same end game.

City fans genuinely lack awareness and intelligence.

PSG worthy of feck all. They are just too deep in UEFA/FIFA arse to risk their Qatar world cup, nothing more.
Bet they (Qatar) are fuming at Messi and Ronaldo *potentially missing out the WC.

*they won't miss out, FIFA are too scared to exclude them.

Good on him. More players should publicly take a stand (well, if they had an ounce of integrity in them)

Ha this the same guy who sent to sign for money bags PSG

Agreed. Unfortunately, this is the way of the world and has been since the 80s. The PL is a child of Thatcher. The ESL is just a continuation of that.

Can't help thinking this is also an opportunity. But I'd actually say the 80s was just an escalation of their war against their own countrymen and women, whereas the elites have been at war with everyone they can reach since we pretty much stopped being hunters and gatherers (slight exaggeration).

I just don't think it would. If both teams had some of the best players in the world then the level of quality on display makes it interesting. All competitions start somewhere and rivalry would very quickly pick up. We have little history with Burnley and yet I hate them at the moment, the difference there is you don't even have the quality to fall back onto so it's just a hard watch.

They already do, why do we need to be in a special club for this?

Spot on. A club that spent 380m on 2 players in one summer and loaned a 180m player back to Monaco to circumvent ffp. City nearly signed Messi on a 1m a week wage last summer during a pandemic.
How is this competition?

What are you guys on about? Stop this whataboutism. Yes football is corrupt but this is another level all together this is not the same. We should be fighting against this not making excuses because other things are corrupt.

I cant agree with this. This is acting as if they are happy with 400m. Theyll want to keep it increasing. Their investment of the buccaneers in this exact setup proves this. Their revenue stream will shrink with shitty tv deals if they just sit back.
It is pure nonsense, that tweet.

There is a shitload of money coming from advertising, shirt deals and so on. As Glazers recently saw, if you don't do well in pitch, it gets harder to get big deals.

i bet without even looking, and i cant because the inevitability will make me physically sick, that this Singer c**t is involved in a few high profile philanthropic ventures, with some celebrities involved and spends time with the gliteratti on both sides of the pond.

i did look and it appears he if of course a 'philanthropist' and of course the largest private donor to the republicans, and also a strong supporter of Israel and Judaism, having donated millions to american synagogues etc. Like does not one single rabbi not turn around and say fook you and your dirty usury stained money? sorry to derail the thread but jeez..

I mean it isn't going to make a massive difference to going to games, we would still play in the PL, and we would still play in europe. Which is exactly what we are doing currently.

More home league games will have less meaning if you're out of the title race. Also there would be more home games which of course means more money spent... not to mention the fact that these ESL games may cost more then regular PL games.

City fans genuinely lack awareness and intelligence.

Half my family are match going blues. They have every right to feel outraged about this as we do.

This is about generations of supporters being forgotten about in seconds.

What, a bunch of stars playing each other in a game where the outcome means nothing, and where everyone by common consent don't do things like tackles? Well, to each his own, I suppose.
The only reason you say that is due to the way it's been handled currently by the footballing officials. You could easily make it more meaningful to do some all-star competitions (i.e prem vs la Liga etc). As I say the Lions tour in rugby is a prestigious and interesting contest, I've never understood why football couldn't think of similar things. Anyway, that's a different discussion but it does seem a bit close-minded to me to just completely shut down talk of ways to create interesting new contests. (not talking about the ESL here for anyone wanting to lump in).

You just like the idea, no point making stuff up is there. 80% says who? You, because you like it, just own it, you want to watch just big teams each week. Looking around football twitter, forums of other teams, its mostly negative. Most will still watch it obviously, but the backlash is vast.
There are literally billions of football fans. A few football forums and some people on Twitter make up how much of that? It's not a proper representation.

Of course, 80% is an arbitrary number but the majority of football fans will watch and pay for this. Making it a success to those involved which is why they've done it.

We've seen a handful of professional footballers come out against it. Out of how many? Hundreds of thousands or millions of them...

I think many have lost sight that part of the reason the games against the likes of Barca, Real, Juve, Bayern’s and that are so special is because they are rare. Playing one of the big names every week is going to lose its luster pretty quickly and let’s be honest if it does generate 300 mil for each club, the Glazers will pocket that whilst the others will probably put a lot more in to the club with their cash flow now equalling and surpassing what the prem makes your likes of the Real’s will have no bother buying your Haalands, Mbappes and that where we’ll probably be shopping in the bargain basement trying to compete.

What are you guys on about? Stop this whataboutism. Yes football is corrupt but this is another level all together this is not the same. We should be fighting against this not making excuses because other things are corrupt.

Look at it from an outside perspective. These things are not irrelevant in cause and effect.

PSG and UEFAs lacklustre way of dealing with them are very much at the heart of why this Super League has come about.

Half my family are match going blues. They have every right to feel outraged about this as we do.

This is about generations of supporters being forgotten about in seconds.

Of course they should condemn this league but the poster I quoted was somehow equating this with FFP rules which is extremely stupid.

Why would they be guaranteed more money than they currently get when they are currently subsidized by the top clubs who have decided to stop sharing? You don't actually think that there is an international demand for Burnley vs Sheffield United?
No, I don't, that's why I don't think they'd be part of a breakaway league, but Rangers vs Newcastle? Probably? There's a balance between revenue and entertainment. No one wants to watch the same 6 teams play each other 30 times, even the guys running this know that.

Come on. Genuinely? Don't be naive. It's nothing to do with us "legacy" fans.
No i don't think they are doing it for us fans we all know they are doing it to grow and secure their income streams going forward. But I don't think it shows contempt to us fans at all. Fans of these clubs will get better games and likely more big-name signings, which is something fans want.

Unfortunately the owners of these clubs do not see much profit in the actual supporters of their clubs. There's plenty more where they came from if they just go play their games abroad. The existing support and traditions are holding them back from more money.

It’s cold but it’s true, those fans built our game and built those clubs, but in space-year 2021 they’re not necessary. The game is global and can reach anywhere, it’s grown in to a behemoth. It’s a disgusting slap in the face but the world is a different place now. Which is why this future of the game is inevitable. There should have been strict regulations of ownership of football clubs, nobody wanted the Glazers and they let it happen. It’s absolutely tragic.
