Right. Glad it’s decided. I don’t think he deserves another season but it is what it is and I will be positive.
Silver linings:
It looked as though Jason Wilcox was influencing him a bit with tactics towards the end of the season. Eriksen was played a bit more to improve us technically in possession, and we were more compact in midfield. That needs to continue (with better players).

If we can have an excellent transfer window, 5 or 6 players in, plus players remaining injury free for the most part, we will be a lot better.

Also, the alternatives to him were mediocre. McKenna would have been exciting but he’s unproven in the league.

The decision could have been made a bit sooner but overall we just needed to be patient.

The people calling Ineos a disaster or as bad as the Glazers are way over the top.
Let’s see what we do in the transfer window. And also, the director of football isn’t in place nor is the CEO yet, so just be patient.
If we’ve only made 2 poor signings by August then there might be cause for concern.

New contract will at least allay the fears of Southgate. I'm not expecting him to be a success long term, but I'll back him and hope to see a drastic change.

The fact they are supposedly now negotiating a new contract is bizarre. Its like Ed never left.

The most likely outcome is he gets a big payoff mid season

Happy with the news.

I would've taken Tuchel over him (and even he has some seriously concerning flaws in his record) - but the rest of the managers touted were frankly utter shite. The correct decision.

He needs to hit the ground running next season, however, or questions will be asked.

Whatever way you look at it, what confidence is there in Ten Hag from the hierarchy when they are sniffing around for a replacement.

feck confidence, no Madrid manager ever feels confident of his position.

Ten Hag had a shite season, and has probably kept his job just about by the FA Cup final result and performance. He should know that everyone at the club is asking serious questions about him and that he’ll need to start next season much much better to remain in charge.

First manager to escape the sack after not getting top 4.

Ineos are not like the Glazers but could be worse, we'll see.

For everyone that isn’t happy about ETH staying with us. When he proves his worth this year with hopefully a fit squad at his disposal, don’t be jumping back on the bandwagon when he gets us back to what is expected from the current state of our team. He was and will prove again to be the correct person at the helm. Erik Ten Hag is a brilliant manager working through the bullshit that this club has been for years. He’s already winning silverware under these conditions, imagine what is possible when things go smoothly. Let’s get behind him and the team and fecking show this league who the feck Man Utd are. As we always have done.

Ridiculous decision, I didn't think this club could continue to make more stupid choices once the Glazer's relinquished power from the footballing department but I was wrong. I am very curious to see how we go the start of next season but if we don't clear out the dead wood it will
be more of the same.

Vital he gets the CB, CM and ST he says we want now. All with a rumoured £50m net spend budget.
More like £100m I thought and that should be (1) before sales and (2) on an amortisation basis?

Even the drop in wages is massive. Varane and Martial were about £30m a year? If we can bin Sancho (and expect Greenwood to go), that’s hopefully £50m min and their wages.

Hard to know whether to be glad or not considering the lacklustre candidates, I think they play more into my feelings than the idea of ETH being the man. Such a weird situation with a manager that appeared to be a dead man walking then winning his second trophy and a review that felt like it took a lifetime for a decision that you would have thought could have been alighted upon months ago. Just very very strange stuff.

But ultimately the one good thing is it draws a line under it for now and we get to the serious business of improving this squad.

The bad thing is it didn't signal much faith, he's going to be under extraordinary pressure, 1-2 bad results at the start of the season will have him really flailing.

Getafe will receive 20% of that fee, yes that was part of their deal to take him on loan, that they would receive 20% of any future transfer fee. I think it was Romano that broke that news. I would fire Murtough into mars if I could.
Yeah, what a monumentally stupid decision that was.

Don't think he is good enough to get us where we want to be.

I especially don't want him anywhere near desicions about transfers.

But I also think the club behaved atrociously in the run up to this, and if the alternatives really were poch or southgate, its probably the right option to keep him.

We will need better if we want to be winning champions leagues again though.
I don’t think he will be thankfully

Plot twist:

ten Hag to resign tomorrow for having to wait like an absolute tool and being embarrased by the fact the club were apparently happy for Southgate to replace him.

I think it’s going to end up a mistake to keep him but I’m relieved this sorry saga is over and that we didn’t end up with Southgate or Poch or Tuchel. I also found all the press gloating after the FA cup final really distasteful.

Hopefully the theory that he will be fine with an improved club structure is a sound one. He has a lot of improvements to make though, he underperformed along with the players last season.

Glad it’s over now (even though I still think it’s the wrong decision), and as promised I’m going to stop with the nonsense I’ve posted here for the last few months and just hope he proves me wrong.

Up to the club now to support him properly in the transfer market and ensure he has everything he needs to succeed.

There should be no contract extension other than one that states certain get out clauses.
No major improvement, no job and no compensation.
If everyone has suddenly forgotten 90% of the matches this season, then they have been seriously brainwashed.

And a good first season plus unattractive alternatives in fairness. Just glad for some clarity
Nah even in the first season after the cup win we were complete trash and limped thru. Then we clearly went more with what EtH wants to set us up as and sucked this entire season.

As for the alternatives I think it was a bit funny to watch people say nothing good available when I'd honestly say this was the biggest group of possible new managers I'd seen in a long time.

I still have massive doubts but at the same time I'm glad we didn't went with Southgate or Tuchel.

Nice final feck you from Murtough indeed

The amount of slapped arses in here is typical of modern day football fans. What happened to supporting your team through thick and thin

450m wasted on garbage
8th placed finish
Negative goal difference after 38 games
Dead last in the CL group with 2 cannon fodder teams
Rushing players back and running them into the ground

Congrats to everyone who wanted this loser to stay. Enjoy the summer.

hoodwinked by one game and the club fell for it .... so the level of expectations and acceptance at the club is finishing 8th with a negative goal difference whilst spending 450Mill

After the way we played for the majority of the season I can't say I'm excited about this but it's better than Southgate so silver linings and all that guff. I just hope this means we can start targeting players and get a solid summer of dealings under way, there's plenty of ins and outs that need to happen so clarity on the managerial situation should kick start the process, we can't afford to have a summer of dilly dallying.
