Erik ten Hag | 2022/23 & 2023/24

The longer it takes the more likely he's staying, and it's the right decision for now.
I have the opposite view, unfortunately. A quick announcement would have definitely meant he’s staying, if that was the decision. By dragging this out it is undermining EtH, even if they then decide he’s staying. The message from all of this must surely mean they (whoever ‘they’ are) are either undecided, or not confident enough in him to lead our club forward.

"We'd fire you but there's not much on the market we truly feel can guide United to the top. And we kinda like Southgate but he's not going anywhere yet. So, congrats, you're retained for another year!"

My guess with INEOS' M.O., they are just trying to work out how they can sack him and pay him as little as possible in compensation. They probably wanted him to lose the final as it would have made it really easy and cheaper.

Great to know our new management is just as dithery and indecisive as the old management

So, I've just joined this forum, and this is my first post. I felt compelled to join, as I needed to get my view across on Erik Ten Hag, for however little it is worth. He has got to stay, please. I fear he will be shown the door, but think it will be a huge mistake.

Since Sir Alex left, he was the first manager I truly felt could fit the profile of what Manchester United needs. A manager who wants to play good football, is likely to commit himself to the club for the long terms and build something. When he walked through the door, we all know the club was an absolute mess. If we were being truthful, we knew it would take several years to even dream of challenging at the top of the table. Yet, two years into the job, Man Utd have played in 4 domestic cups, got to the final 3 times and won twice. We had a really encouraging time in the Premier league last season, and were looking pretty good in Europa League until Martinez got injured, and then our vulnerabilities came to the forefront again.

This season has been poor. Really horrific. I won't lie and say I haven't cursed a lot while watching many games, and questioned decisions ETH has made. But, no manager gets everything perfect, right? So many pundits, especially those not associated with Utd, are quick to stick the knife in any chance they get. They don't know and feel the club deep down, they just know that sensationalizing Man Utd problems gets clicks. I've heard people like Shearer continue to say things like "Injuries are no excuse, all clubs have them". However, I'd love someone to ask Shearer "OK then, Newcastle have fallen down the table this year compared to last, is Howe taking them backwards and should he be sacked?". I am certain Shearer would then start telling us about the injury problems Newcastle have had to face. Arsenal have pretty much had all their key players available all season. Liverpool had a spell after Xmas where they had injuries, but apart from Robertson had their key players for first half of season, and also had them at the end of the season.

Dalot has been our only defender that has been fit through the vast majority of the season. Not only are so many of our best defenders missed games, our second string players have often been out injured as well. So, we end up playing 3rd, 4th, 5th string players, players out of position, etc. When injured, our better players simply cannot train, cannot be developed. When they do put their injury behind them, their only training is to try and get fit and stronger, and then they are thrown into the side as they are the only option. Do people really expect that this fragmented squad should be able to compete consistently against well drilled, Premier league sides? Finishing 8th this season is such a disappointment. Yet, then again, given how shocking we have been, it is almost amazing we've finished that high, and beat a number of sides who get a lot of praise over the season. If Utd hadn't suffered so many injuries (say, no more than 2 or even 3 key players out), then I'm sure ETH could have coached the available players to become more consistent, and we'd have at least pushed for the Top 4.

Cast your mind back to the era Sir Alex came to Utd. Before he joined, they finished the 5 previous campaigns in the Top 5. In his first season, they finished 11th, but then did well the following year and ended up 2nd. However, in his third season they finished 12th, and the season after 13th. It wasn't until his 7th season that they won the league, and the rest is history. For many of those that insists ETH should leave, they'd also have sacked Alex Ferguson long before the Premier League began.

For me, ETH has done more than enough to indicate he is a good manager, is committed to building a side and giving youth a chance, and would be there for the long haul. Not just looking for a nice 3 or 4 year pay day, before going off to some other big club. But, as a fan, I want to be loyal to this "project". Continue to believe, even when things get tough. I'm sure ETH will have learnt much more from the tough periods than he does when things are going well. If anyone knows what mistakes have been made, and where the club needs to be improved, it will be ETH. And, if INEOS can just bring in good people above him, who can sort out the scouting system, transfer policy and negotiations, then together I'm sure they can all take the club forward sooner rather than later.

So, come on Man Utd. Support your people, support your manager. Please tell us he is staying, and get moving on how you are going to develop the squad for next season. And, please don't sack the manager, and bring in some of the managers that have been rumored. Honestly, I think some of them are going to present a whole world of problems.

I've been visiting this forum for many years, around 15 maybe, and quite often but I haven't felt the need to register or comment much until now. However, I've recently registered because I felt compelled to respond.

Firstly, I noticed a post that almost word-for-word reflects my views on the matter. This post, from a newbie, his first, deserves support and highlighting, maybe a reminder as well.

After years of suffering, we are on the threshold of a potentially better tomorrow. I strongly believe that, could write many many reasons which would support this idea from my perspective and why I believe that, but now its not about me. Anyway, I strongly believe that firing EtH at this stage would not only suggest that the new management is no better than the previous one, but it would also significantly hurt the transformation process in its most important and tricky part. Furthermore, it could significantly harm those fantastic young players whom EtH has given opportunities to and who, despite their young age, are already leaders of the team.

Probably announce it after the UCL final when people don’t have time to be annoyed. Especially if Dortmund pull off a United.

How about this .. let him have another season and let him know there’s no guarantee we will offer you a new deal until the end of the season (if you make it that far )

I don't really know what's taking so long at this point. It's not a very decent backing if its taking so long, if he's being replaced I hope the new manager is very much lined up, not that I believe that's happening anymore, think its clear Ten Hag is safe. It's being handled weirdly.

I do get that people are restless. The people implicated are probably much more restless. However I don’t really understand what people’s ideal processes would look like. To me, it would make sense if I’m a newcomer at a club, asked to make a big decision like this, that I would have as thorough as possible foundation to make a good decision. To me that would entail more than watching the games and training sessions and reading the papers and redcaf. I would want to have thorough reviews of the season, including from all the players and all the coaches, before I’d make such a decision. Would I conduct those interviews during the season, or before the cup final? Probably not. I’d wait until after the season. Do a thorugh review with everyone before they are let on holiday, and make a decision as quick as possible based on the total of impressions. If I’m making the decision as part of a team of three people where two are supposed not to work for the club yet, I would probably either postpone the decision for a year or take the time to smuggle them through the review, probably taking a little more time.

Would anybody here do it differently?

I for one sure hope Jim Ratcliffe doesn’t make the decision himself based on his How-I-Became-a-Chemicals-Billionaire gut feeling and Dave Brailsfords cycling opinions.

Long enough; did read. (Well written)

That just opens up the possibility that even if next season goes fantastically (I know that's stretching the limits of believability, but stay with me), he gets a better offer and buggers off to Madrid or Barca or Bayern or somewhere. Can't imagine the new management would put themselves in a position to potentially look so foolish. For me it has to be either back him fully or sack him now. I'm tired of this whole thing at this point. If it drags on much longer it's going to end up with another season flushed down the toilet before it's even started, and another year of excuses about how success was impossible due to the behind the scenes turmoil.

With how Ineos have treated him, if they decide to keep him without extending his deal, he will leave the second he gets a half decent offer from anywhere.

He had his chance at Bayern. They moved on. He's not getting a better and bigger club than United anytime soon.

So this idea that we're trigger happy with managers really couldn't be further from the truth. Other than maybe Arsenal, we've given managers more time to prove themselves than any other top club in the world would.
[/QUOTE]

When you' as a club have got a group of players , you set a bar for them , wether you are sheff United or Real Madrid .

To compete at the top you need the right players .Madrid's , bayerns always have the top players . If you've got them and you flounder , the manager is at risk

No issue with that , so he should be .We haven't got them , it'll take time to get them ( Arteta , not missed a window )

Then add into the mix that you've also got to deliver a new possession based pleasing playing style with a squad barely half suited to it and get results / compete

It's a lot to ask in 2 years . Never mind post Saf , no manager has ever done that here .
Is anybody else asking this of a manager ? I'd be interested to know .

Isn't a proper footballing structure what most people have been calling out for, for years? That's how a football structure works, that's how almost every big club but United have operated for quite a while.

The DOF, Technical directors etc. handle the transfers in/out and shaping the squad. Ratcliffe has said they'll be choosing the style of play and the manager will have to adhere to that.

If Erik doesn't want to work under those restrictions and walks fair play to him. But also good luck finding a decent club anywhere where he wouldn't be operating under a similar structure.

I get you, but in no business does the hierarchy over see the management level - (micro management) it breeds all types of problems.

I work for a global company, the structure is insane when you first look at it, but the escalation paths are brilliant. My wife however works for a company (global) she has zero structure but looking from the outside you'd never know.

Which bring me onto the word culture, I've also been in about 3 take overs. I've seen top (Senior level), bottom and hight (CEO) sweeps. I hate the ones that read a book and think firing someone on the frist day means something (to the yanks this is normal - brown boxing) it's not cool or helpful.

Hopefully these lot are steady, because creating a culture takes time, when was the last time a player spoke out? Dropped bombs? Even PRashford? Zero. They know. Eth will have their backs.

It seems that Ten Hag is the first big decision our management can not agree upon. Came sooner than I expected

He had his chance at Bayern. They moved on. He's not getting a better and bigger club than United anytime soon.

I mean if he's kept here and somehow turns it around. He wont stick around.

Fair play, I've read this site since 2004/5 back then you couldn't register on a hotmail account. Guess it all changed now - they'll let any muppet in, like me..

Under Ineos there won't be a manager, just a head coach.

Could be they are negotiating with a manager in secret, or doing their review. Who knows.

If you feel like the word head coach makes you feel better then fine.

It's nothing to do with feelings mate to be fair. The position Ten Hag or anyone else will have under Ineos going forward will be vastly different to the one Moyes, Jose, Louis, Ole and Ten Hag have had over the last 11 years.

Personally I'm glad to see it, as the Glazers have been trying to plug someone in hoping they can replace SAF who was a coach, a DOF and a general manager all rolled into one. But there isn't another Alex Ferguson.

Bloke has an opinion on the manager that you don't like so you decide to get personal, nice. I thought the Ten Hag out brigade were supposed to be the classless ones.

The craziest thing is that Phelan even answered it diplomatically. Initially he even attempted to dodge the question

Away from the absolutely disgusting treatment of him by the board and media, Ten Hag really baffles me. Some of our games, usually when Martinez plays, contain parts like the first halves against Spurs (A), Wolves (A) and the cup final where our performance is absolutely perfect on and off the ball. As in, there’s no real way to improve on them aside from finishing. However, there are others, including, and this is what makes it really baffling, the other games against the exact same three clubs this season where we look no better than Luton with our negative hoofball tactics.

I’d keep him though. It’s absolutely impossible for me to want him to be sacked after the day out he gave me at Wembley, and the fact that there have been many positive signs over the two years that he’s been here. This comes with the caveat that transfer power has to be shifted to the higher ups like Ashworth (shhh), Wilcox and Berrada though, because even Ten Hag’s most ardent supporter can’t disagree that his recruitment with the exception of Martinez has been pretty shocking and amateurish with the Eredivisie links on the whole.

I feel like this thread is essentially a movie version of Black Mirror. The poll solidifies that.

Logic will always win, its about framing it.

Logic: Fire Eth if by Christmas not in the top three, use the time to find the manager/coach we need, let that coach/manager see the football we play, fire him for cheaper, let Eth do his thing.

By the way I think he'll turn it a round. hopefully dramatically - he needs 4/5 players.

We should follow the NBA, there will be an interview conducted with everyone including the players to get a sense what went wrong in the season, whether is it tactics or head coach or not having the right talent in the team before everyone goes for holiday. It seems weird that decisions are not made and everyone happily goes on vacation and then receive news that they are sack after review. United to interview every players, every coaches to get a perspective on how they feel about the squad, manager, tactics, training and etc. Management can use those feedback to decide if we should keep the manager or remove certain "star" player, they will also know which position to prioritize.

Probably announce it after the UCL final when people don’t have time to be annoyed. Especially if Dortmund pull off a United.
Would love to be a fly on the wall inside Carrington if Dortmund win and ETH stays to see the interaction between a freshly CL winning Sancho and him

Given how bad we've been for 16 months you'd think Ineos would have considered the idea of sacking him a few months back.

Why would they start the Manager search now when they should have already been doing it. If they have just started the search now then we're doomed to be as shit as ever.

Yeah it all feels very Woodward / Murtough round two to me. The leaks before the FA cup final, the lack of clarity on this issue even after the season is done, Ratcliffe's seeming snub in his comments, non commital language from all the staff / players leading to more speculation (maybe they were coached to say it) - it doesn't look good.

I'd like him gone ideally for Tuchel but I think he's a decent enough coach who can get us 4th - 6th next season and a cup run in the Euros depending on how things go injury / signing wise.

My guess with INEOS' M.O., they are just trying to work out how they can sack him and pay him as little as possible in compensation. They probably wanted him to lose the final as it would have made it really easy and cheaper.

Actually this is a decent shout. They might have wanted to sack him but he got Europe and the FA cup so they'd probably have to pay him extra to do it and they're noodling about a few extra M.

And that’s just a normal season. If there is a whole new team on their way in responsible for setting a whole new direction for the club, you’d expect the process to be a bit more thorough even, wouldn’t you - at least if there are serious question marks to answer. By now it’s gone four days since the players, coaches and all where involved in a cup final win. Probably none of the interviews should be conducted the first 48 hours after such an emotional rollercoaster, certainly if you want some soberheaded evaluations to go by. How anyone would expect then a decision by this week is a bit beyond me. Let alone those who has assumed it to be taken before the final even. If Ashworth, Berrada and Wilcox had been part of last summers planning and in house all season I would understand it if they could cut corners with a descision. How it is now, it would just seem irresponsible.

Not a good start INEOS. You’ve had since March realistically to review the situation. They are fumbling. Stay or go now, they look a bit shit so far.
