It is a rag, but the caf is biased towards it anyway.
I'm beginning to suspect that sports journalism might be the easiest job in the world. Let me illustrate by fabricating a story out of thin air.

According to my sources, a contract extension for Erik ten Hag is expected to be officially announced by the end of this week. This extension confirms the club's confidence in Ten Hag's leadership and long-term vision, highlighting their commitment to stability and continued success under his guidance.

Imagine if I got paid for that just by working for the tabloids :D

People who don't speak English as a first language shouldn't be listened to.

Especially when they dont seem to have even been a fan when Jose was managing, since he's also won 2 trophies.

That’s what reports before the FA cup final wanted us all to believe. Every single reporter was confident that we’d lose and then ETH would be sacked. The fact we won as backfired on them. I doubt Ratcliffe leaked anything before the final about him being sacked. They was always gonna review it this week and decide if theirs anyone better to take over or not.

Oh please dont tell me you're gullible enough to think a) the review hasn't already been done and b) it takes a week to summarise a review.

Why are they pre-empting this mythical review tapping up other managers?

What a weird open letter. Who exactly is this group? How many fans do they speak for?

they don’t speak for me. i said if we were doing an open letter about the manager then i’d want to add a bit about making the players wear transparent shorts.

Hope I'm wrong, but I don't see a happy ending to this.
The whole point of Ineos putting together a specialist recruitment team is that future decisions are made based on data and due diligence rather than fan opinion. Let the fans bitch and moan, they'll forget about it pretty quickly if ETH's successor gets off to a flyer.

The fans wanted Ole to stay too. He hasn't had a job offer since.

Yeah you are not wrong. When he said he cannot play like Ajax here was a massive red flag for me and was the point I went full Ten Hag out. He needs to go back on that and I dont think he wants to.

But lets see what happens, I still firmly believe they wont let the fans dictate.
If they listen to fan sentiment they may as well get Arnold back to have pints with a few down the pub

Nah, The Guardian is alright when it comes to politics. Did brilliantly in exposing Dominic Cummings and Johnson, especially during Partygate.

The football section is fairly terrible. BTL is ABU bliss whereas its casual prodding into all things United rarely hits the mark, save, of course, if you're a shit-stirring ABU.

Who wrote that, a primary school child?

Ageism.

Should throw your hat in the ring for position with forward thinking ideas like that. I'm sure INEOS could knock up a synthetic fibre to make it happen.

I may not support the ambition behind it in this case but I am absolutely in favour of memory holing the Jose years.

I agree that's true . So Why did it take him 4 years to win a cup , whilst also racking up some really poor league positions and spending more than everybody else .

That's what I'd like you to explain .

You want me to explain why someone with better pedigree gets afforded more time and leeway than a relatively unknown/bum/potentially chancer?

are we at the stage where we're starting to muddy Ferguson's achievements to start propping up Ten Hag? Or is this just a weird repackaging of "time + underperforming = Ferguson success" equation that people want to believe in?

On what basis? Has it been confirmed Ten Hag is staying?

If he gets sacked in the next week do you owe them an apology?
I haven't seen reputable sources like Fabrizio or Ornstein claiming that Ten Hag will be sacked. I trust their sources more than the rag tabloid. If he does get sacked, I will apologize to The Guardian for doubting their story.

I think that the open letter is reasonable and more than appropriate to our current circumstances. The boss has won 2 major trophies in 2 seasons, and this FA cup is all the more noteworthy because we had to beat the Scousers and the Cheats to succeed. All this frenzied talk abour sacking and 'resetting' is very concerning. We need Sir Jim and the board to take stock and to not act rashly. Back the winning manager. This guy has done a great job with a poor squad while being shamefully harangued by large and impatient elements of our 'fan' base. I was there at Crystal Palace and that response at the final whistle was the real utd way. I back ETH for at least another season.

It makes you think why so many fans were so bothered about us getting a new football director and creating a new structure at the club if they just want United to make decisions based on fan opinion. It's ridiculous.

A fair bit of that poor squad is his!

If it's between Poch, De Zerbi or Tuchel. We would be better off giving Ten Hag next season and see where we go next season, need to get the signings right behind the scene and get rid of the majority of the squad too

You basically just confirmed my post about bias, you're a leftist who likes the Guardian

I get fans being prisoners of the moment. It's what fans do (United fans especially). But when/if the people in charge start doing the same - trouble ahead

United fans are the worst. Complain for years about us needing a proper football structure. Finally get that pretty much in place. Manager has a really bad season, at which point his backing is at an all time low amongst supporters. Wins an FA Cup by parking the bus. Fans lobby and try to pressure the board/structure to keep him based off one game. You couldn't script it.

And what makes it worse is that Ineos are clearly feeling the pressure. I honestly thought the take over would be an end to the chronic decision making at the club, but it's starting to feel like just the next chapter.

If they're delaying the decision to sack him, it's most likely because they're debating who should take over and whether the chosen candidate will agree to join.

There's no way it will take a week to decide whether ETH should stay or not. It could plausibly take a week to organise meetings with the new chosen manager and their agent.

I still think he's gone.

An open letter clearly written by 1 person, and I doubt English is even their first language based on how badly written it is.
So, what if English isn't their first language? Just to let you know, English is my fifth language.

This will be my generation's Fergie moment. In a few years I'll be sitting on my balcony overlooking a calming sea, watching the sun set, and a little voice will say;

"Grandpa Pidgy, is it true that United were going to sack Ten Hag 25 years ago?"

And I'll chuckle, smile lovingly as I look towards his big augmented ladybird eyes, and say "Yes, Tarquin X Æ A-Xii Skibidi Pigeon Jr, but nobody knew he was about to win the Champions League twenty times in a row. Now, enjoy the rest of your birthday party - you only turn six once! And in the morning, Private, get your fecking lazy ungrateful arse on that troop carrier and don't come back until the French - and the rest of those Pee-ew EU cnuts - are crying for their mothers through slit throats."

I'm telling you - just wait - you'll see that I'm right.

United fans want change everywhere, except the manager. He's a good lad, who's had it tough and was let down by everything and everyone.

Yes, he's made plenty of mistakes this season but I would rather give him another year to prove himself than see this bunch of players outlast another manager.

ETH now knows which players are just not reliable / good enough to move us forward and will hopefully replace with better players.

The idea of a new manager coming in and trying to get the vast majority of these players to turn things around is just a big no for me.
