Erik ten Hag | 2022/23 & 2023/24

I've been saying this consistently, even before Ten Hag was hired. Our team is built for a mid block, adopting anything else will be difficult and will result in a few drubbings at minimum. I get that you want to gloat, but no examples you can give are as tough a job as the United one.

I'm not looking to gloat. To be honest I hate nothing more than United fans being divided as it has been for the last 10 years. But I do firmly believe somebody could get us looking well coached within half a season. Not saying it would be successful instantly, but the signs would be there. I honestly do think there's just been an accumulation of different issues over the years, and most of our managers just weren't up to it for different reasons. They have been hampered by players, Woodward etc but I don't think we're just so unlucky that the 100s of players we've had over 10 years are just simply not coachable. And I think this group is one of our best in the last 10 years because some of the past signings that we've not accumulated are solid, and we've got a good crop of youngsters that have come through and look like they could be top level if handled correctly.

If we'd lost I think he would have been sacked either tomorrow or when it's mathematically impossible to qualify for the CL.

Now I think he'll get the cup final as his final game as Utd boss.

It's a shame with Ten Hag as for a couple of months last year it looked like we'd really got it.

Quickly became apparent that it was based on very rare Rashford form, Casemiro having a sensational impact and Martinez and Bruno playing superbly too.

Casemiro seems to have dropped off in a way even the most negative fan couldn't have foreseen, Martinez now has serious doubts he can carry out his aggressive style without missing massive swathes of the season and Rashy has gone back to his bad old days

Meanwhile we have ludicrously put all our eggs in a young kid up front who we don't really know if he enough or not.

Add in a sky high priced Antony who can't get in over Garnacho and Shaw who misses half the season.
Plus Maguire and McTom probably being our best performers when we tried to ship them and it's a real crock of pony.
Aye, one can hope he’s replaced by someone who’s had an impact like an Ange at spurs or so. With 3-4 really smart signings to complement their style (& a decent injury free season for the likes of Martinez, Shaw, Mount etc). I know…the back room structure probably won’t be in place in time and there’s a lot of “wishfulness” in there….but yeah, seems we’re in dire straits.

At least Dalot, Mainoo, Garnacho & to an extent Hojlund means we have something to build on.

I see his point but it could be perceived as an embarrassing achievement. A bit like escaping a burning building with a foot long dildo hanging from your backside.

You clearly don't know what that means. I've addressed your point directly, I just called out your lack of good faith discussion while doing so.

I do but I'm just playing your tedious accusation game mate.

This simply isn't true. This squad is a mishmash of Ole/Mou legacy, Murtough signings, a few first choice Ten Hag signings, and freebies and desperation loans. You stopped debating in good faith a while ago, but this is way beyond that.

It is true though, Ten Hag has control over targets and veto over signings. No one has been signed that he didn't identify or accept as an alternative. This is his squad for the most part, he's spent £450m ffs.

The bit in bold is a strawman. I've stated directly that this isn't how Ten Hag wants to play, it's a dodgy hybrid because we can't play how he wants yet. If you want to argue with things you've made up, you can do that without replying to me.

Whether he thinks he's getting sacked or not is irrelevant. He was brought in to try to establish a new way of playing, to give up on that would be worse than trying and failing. The former is just as much of a sackable offence as the latter.

I'm happy to end the discussion here mate, because ironically I don't believe you are discussing in good faith. If you are fair enough, but I don't feel like continuing.

Good night, no hard feelings.

Regardless, it’s 3 cup finals in 2 seasons. If he was as shit as some say he is on here, i’m not sure that would have been able to happen.

I disagree. Look at our fixtures for two years under ETH. Except for the games against Liverpool and City, we were the favourites.

Think we've also had a majority of these games at home?

You'd think a club with our money could occasionally get 1 transfer out of 10 working well beyond about 6months. But our record post Fergie has been unbelievable.

It'd be fingers on one hand maximum we could claim as success, and even that would have fierce debate.

Taking off Garnacho and Mainoo while leaving on rashford is becoming pathetic. If everyone can see it but he can’t then you have to wonder.

Usually, I would advocate for the manager who gets the team to a cup final to be given the chance to see it through. In this instance, hope we sack EtH just to make a statement that this performance (and the entire season really) is unacceptable.
He can talk about missing players all he wants but there has been absolute no improvement in the structure and performances of the team over the last months. He keeps on picking the same players, with the same setup and the same deficiencies. He has proved he is not the coach to manage us at this level. Sooner we part, better it us for us and maybe even for him.

I was expecting something slightly weird after “A bit like..” - but fecking hell

Again, I couldn't actually see what the tactics were today. His substitutions were bizarre, again. We got a result today but many times we haven't. Should a Man Utd team go three up against a Championship side that's eighth in their league and ship three goals, albeit the penalty being a joke? No they shouldn't. Rashford is a disgrace. He wasn't touched when he threw himself to the ground and he landed ok too. Hobbling off is embarrassing for him and the club. EtH will cite the injuries the team have had, which is fair. But he has been responsible for the players purchased that have been sub-standard and his coaching staff. WTF is Steve McClaren doing there? I feel he has to go now.

It was damaging having SAF and Gill leave at the same time (I think they left at the same time?). Then I’ll say it again, the worst thing to happen to the club (ignoring the Glazers) was Woodward. Clueless on how to run a football club and did more damage to this club than any one other individual IMO.

How many people really felt we had the game wrapped up at 3-0? I bet most of us were just waiting to see how we were going to throw it away.

Big if indeed. Regardless, it’s 3 cup finals in 2 seasons. If he was as shit as some say he is on here, i’m not sure that would have been able to happen.

Bryan Robson got Middlesbrough to 3 cup finals in 2 seasons in the 90s. Cup competitions aren’t a reliable indicator of how good a team or a manager is, which is why everyone looks at the league when judging managers and teams.

We're making the right noises totally revamping the structure, with what we "think" are best in class appointments, rather than Glazer money men ludicrously out of their element.
Also best to avoid the classic error or throwing in old boy players for key roles. They can have a role to play, but should be more ambassador or coaching lower down the age ranges.

Yep, it’s right there in my post you quoted.

Agreed re all that. At least we’re targeting “football experts in football roles” and none of this incompetent people elevated to roles beyond them. Hopefully it pays off - albeit we will probably need to be a bit patient.

His pressers now sound like a man who's trying to save his career with zero regard to how he sounds to fans of his current club, United. Everything is self serving and self interested at this point.

Alonso, Amorim, or Zidane. Until any of these guys sign on the dotted line, they're still available and we can probably pay much better than most.

I just don’t see how Alonso would even consider the United job when he’s already turned down the liverpool job. Yes, so far so good from INEOS but it’s uncertain whether the new structure will be successful, there will inevitably be bumps along the way. Liverpool are far more stable from a structure standpoint at the moment and likely would’ve backed Alonso with a huge transfer budget yet he still turned it down. He’ll be patient and doesn’t need to rush his next job, and certainly not to United when Madrid maybe looking to replace Ancelotti in a few years.

Zidane has already stated he has no interest in managing in England and I think that position doesn’t change despite whatever efforts INEOS make.

The United job is very much a poisoned chalice at the moment. It destroys and tears down good managers. The footballing structure may change that perception but I suspect many managers will give second thought to managing United until they see a commitment to keeping the new structure and whether it delivers success in the transfer market.

"Best team in the World"

No Utd manager should ever be saying that about City.

He’s stating a fact. What else do you want him to say? He would’ve been shredded if he said United were up there with city when we’re clearly not.

Think more Potter and Southgate. That's more realistic.

He's done here now. We all know it, he knows it. It is a bit cruel extending his stay of execution, hearing him talk crap to the media and defend his team and performance. I do wonder will they publicly announce his departure like Tuchel at Bayern, it might actually help the team get across the line in the cup final.
