Eric Bailly | BBC say signing is imminent

I'm the same, hope we never sign an African international. Frankly, I find the AFCON being in the middle of the season absurd and why is it every two years?
Weather concerns. It's Moonsoon season in West Africa in July and that is where the tournament is mostly held. You can't host a tournament in such conditions.

Also the African football calendar runs from Jan to Dec,not Aug to May.

Ridiculous.

ACON lasts 3 weeks max, assuming the player's team starts and goes to the final. You're looking at 2 weeks on average at the end of January/early Feb. There's usually no CL, Carling Cup is the only major cup that's active, and the PL after the christmas period is somewhat quiet.

I never understood the bias against ACON tbh.

Anyway Bailly from the one game I saw of him at Villarreal (against 'Pool) he looked very good.
Judging by City's experience with Yaya, Kolo and Bony I think you may be underestimating the absence.
Recently Côte d'Ivoire like to get the squad together for a compulsory training week before the tournament starts, then follows the tourny itself when they almost always get through to at least the semis which means that there will be a final or 3/4 place match to follow.
In the feasible event of a tournament victory there is then a trip back for a parade and function afterwards and then the matter of travelling back to the UK where the first games back usually see the player a bit rusty in the system as they've changed the style of play for the slower pace of international football and need to readjust.

In a lot of clips he seems to be playing at right back.

Jose eyes his next Ivanovic?

To be fair if Jose is running the rule on a defender I think it's probably safe to trust his judgement. He's the best manager in the world at building solid defences.

End of the day If mourinho wants him then it's good enough for me. I have far more confidence in him than LVG or Moyes

I don't really know anything about him, but we need cb's and I trust Mourinho judgement.

These youtube vids show that he's a fierce tackler, very athletic with great acceleration. Still don't see anything in terms of distribution, aerial ability and of course, what youtube can't really show, positional sense.

Anyone actually seen him play a few games?

The most encouraging thing about this transfer, without knowing much about the player himself, is that it suggests Jose has been planning and maybe even working on transfers for a good while already. Really bodes well for the rest of the summer if we're able to settle 1-2 deals before the Euros.
Yeah it's great that he's buying players even though he's Bailly had any time to settle in here yet.

I saw quite a few good passes and a few times he even beat a player, you watching same videos?

Can't stop thinking about Christian Dailly every time I see his name. Do not want for that reason.

I dont see the comparison other than race and size tbh. Much quicker and decisive than Mangala

I think mangala is the lazy comparison to make when talking about an athletic player because he perhaps has the best build in football. He should be frighteningly good with his height, strength, pace and stamina but he just has his lapses that stop him from being great.

Here is a little clip, if nothing else it shows he is fast big strong has a bit of skill and looks to play the ball not just hoof it. The ACON is a problem. Dont really need to be losing defenders mid season every 2 years.

I like the looks of his playing style, a bit like vidic with more skill, from the few clips i saw(can be misleading, I know) and they did a job on the dippers in spain. Will be digging that out to look a bit more closely now. Click the link if you have not looked him up already

I've only seen one attacking header from a corner which he doesn't really connect well with and one crazy volley from within the box that goes into orbit. I may be wrong to assume that those clips represent him well, but I do wonder why there's nothing in terms of headers won. One of our main problems was our lack of height and our weakness in the air. Hence my interest..

Anyone else think this means we've given up on signing Stones from Everton?

I assume its how we usually approach transfers, make a list with priorities and speak to the clubs nice and early, probably since January or earlier and see what comes back, I'd imagine nothing can come back about Stones up until a new manager is appointed and he decides if Stones is indispensable. Bailly is a bit more straight forward as we can offer big money while his profile isn't huge, players like Laporte will have huge interest from other clubs.

Well, we can assume that Rojo and Jones are not to be trusted, and Blind does not strike me as a Mou type of CB, other than 4th choice back up. So no, I think we are still interested but I doubt we can afford 40-45m when we also have other pressing needs (creative midfielder, pacy RW).

Love this signing. Completely obliterates the Internet transfer forum experts who had us going after Stones, Manolas, LaPorte, Marquinos et al.

I'd be honest, I haven't seen him, but 32m pounds for a defender seems an awful lot. It makes him among top 5 most expensive Defenders iirc. I agree there aren't a lot of options, but I think the amount is enough to try and tempt most defenders. Add a few million and we can get Laporte, and even Marquinhos. At this amount, Thiago Silva is gettable, maybe even Mustafi.
The PSG defenders aren't gettable.

When Barca and Real tried to sign players from PSG, PSG made it clear they wouldn't be doing any business and threatened to go after Reaĺ and Barca's best players(Including Messi and Ronaldo)

Throwing around money doesn't change PSG's stance. They don't need our money.

He looks so fast. I trust Mourinho to see something in him and bring the best out of him.

I was actually quite excited about Manolas in the end :(
