Eric Bailly | BBC say signing is imminent

Apparently best Cb in Spain in one on one situations. Gets beaten less than Ramos, Pique or Godin. According to the sky link, better stats than Smalling and Blind in that regard too.
Would surprise me this one though, personally i thought Stones was a shoe in for Mourinho. Cant really see us buying them both, so Bailly may just b a cheaper option.

Duncan Castles is suggesting that he will be one of two defensive purchases, which surprises me as we had a very good defence last year. If this is true though, then maybe he is a new right back as some are suggesting, because we still need a ball playing CD to replace Blind. I'd rather two centre mids (eg. Pjanic and Gomes) - but it makes one wonder just how many players we are signing! Add Zlatan and a right winger, and you get 6 signings!

Did we? Or did we simply play such a safe, negative style, often with 2 holding mids, that we got good stats that way?

As for Castles, the man is massively ABU, and very very rarely right. So for 2 reasons, I wouldn't hold anything he says in any sort of esteem.

Yep best defence in the league(Although I think that was mainly because Spurs let 5 in at Newcastle although it's still pretty impressive).

Castle's credibility went fairly up quite rapidly with regards to us once we appointed Mourinho.

He has had the inside line to Mendes and Mourinho even at Chelsea.

Not anymore, he is going be the main this summer.

Our defense wasn't good last year, we were just so negative and strangled the life out of as many games as we could we restricted chances to both teams every game. The times when it mattered our defense crumbled.

Why has it gone so quiet on this front? I thought it was basically a done deal the way it was reported yesterday.

Perhaps Barca have pounced behind the curtains?

Thought he was on the wum with that 'announcement tuesday' shit? Isn't that just his new line of merchandise? Last i heard we were trying to get him to lower his wage demands.
I don't know I'm guessing. But I think most will get pissed if he doesn't say tomorrow where he'll be playing next season.

I seem to remember De Gea, Blind and Smalling getting many MOTM, more so than our forwards.

I thought Stones was definitely going to be Mourinho's choice for Mike's CB partner but the more I think of it, Stones is probably not getting sold this summer. If reports are true about Koeman being interested in Everton because they won't sell their best players like Southampton, then I can't see how they justify selling Lukaku who wants CL football AND Stones. Hence the interest in another CB singing which is Bailly.

Some interesting info about Bailly:

Biography...
Bailly joined Espanyol at 17 and after work permit delays and a season playing for the club's B-team in Spain's third tier, he made his debut for the senior side in October 2014. After only four starts - including a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona - he joined Villarreal in a £4.3m deal in January 2015.

The switch was agreed while Bailly was midway through playing the Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament that Ivory Coast eventually won on a penalty shootout. The defender, the youngest player in Herve Renard's squad having only made his international debut the previous month, kept his nerve to convert his spot kick.

After a slow start to life at Villarreal, Bailly impressed in the 2015/16 campaign as the club made it back into the Champions League with a top-four finish. Villarreal also reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, although Bailly missed the second leg of the defeat to Liverpool through injury.

Strengths...

Bailly unquestionably has the physical attributes needed to thrive in the Premier League. He is quick and strong, making him particularly formidable in one-on-one situations. He was dribbled by less often than any other regular centre-back at a top-four club in Spain - that includes Diego Godin, Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique.

Weaknesses...

There have been low points too. Liverpool fans, in particular, will have revelled in the sight of former player Fernando Torres making Bailly look foolish in dispossessing him to score in a game between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal last year and the incident did highlight the improvements required with the ball at his feet.

There are question marks too about Bailly's discipline - Villarreal boss Marcelino called an October sending off against Celta Vigo "absurd". He was carded in 13 games out of 21 early in the 2015/16 season, but there are signs of progress as well - Bailly was not booked once in his final 13 appearances.

"It is an interesting signing and due to his attributes I fully understand why Manchester United are interested in the player," says Terry Gibson, the former United forward and Sky Sports' La Liga expert.

"Bailly is a fast, tall, athletic and strong central defender, who is particularly good when faced with one-on-one situations. When in possession he likes to run out from the back with the ball and has even looked comfortable in these situations when he has played as a right-back for Villarreal, venturing forward and not looking out of place in attacking play.

Terry Gibson on Eric Bailly

"He does need to improve the quality of his passing, which at times can be inaccurate and poorly weighted, but this should be possible given time and the right coaching.

"Bailly is another example of the astute work of Villarreal in the transfer market. The strange thing is that despite losing Bailly and Gabriel Paulista before him to the Premier League, and making huge profits, they will still have managed to retain the services of their first-choice central defensive pairing of Mateo Musacchio and Victor Ruiz.

"Not bad business indeed."

Just watching Di Marzio on Sky Sport Italy, he said that United will sign Bailly for 32 million (euro).

I don't know about this one, the prospect of him starting alongside Smalling as our main centreback pairing doesn't fill me with joy, I'd have preferred to have someone with a little more ability on the ball. Until he is going to fill in for Smalling and then its a terrific signing.

So BBC will forever call it £32m then.

What annoys me to no end is that they are very well aware of the "mixup". We all know that if we were the selling club then they would pay notice to the exchange rate and would present it with the correct amount in pounds.

I guess presenting United as buying high and selling low gets more clicks. Altough tbf we are very often guilty of both.

He sounds like he might need a little bit of time to settle in and adapt, but he's got monster potential. Perfect for the modern day little-fast strikers. Him and Smalling will be a pain in the ass to dribble through.

Smalling will just grab fast striker and give away penalty.:smirk:

Hopefully this Eric is a Cantona rather than a Djemba-Djemba in terms of his impact at United.

Him and Smalling will be like two rocks at the back. Physically and also technically.

Only Daily Mail really running with it to be honest. They say medical today and official confirmation by Friday.

Forget about building the attack from the back. Smalling cant pass for shit. And apparently thats Bailly's weakness as well.

Yeah, two CBs known for their 1v1 prowess.

I just hope he complements Smalling instead of just being Mike ver2.0 because from what I've heard so far they sound quite similar.

i think Jose is going for two strong centre halves...similar to Pepe / Ramos. Add a bit more physicality to our squad. Personally, I'd like to have seen Stones or Varane but if it means having two strong, fast, physical centre halves, then i'm in.

Had a look at his numbers/stats from last season. Certainly doesn't look like he'll be any worse than Smalling/Blind and hopefully he has a massive ceiling given the money we're spending on him.
