We clearly were let down in midfield today and I can understand why Ole made the choices he did off the bench, Scott usually adds more dynamism which was lacking and Jesse is more of a goal threat when you are trying to nick a winner at the end. That said, if Donny does not play next week then he is clearly never going to get in the team and we need to try and sell him before the window shuts and another season on the bench reduces his value by another 10 to 15 million.
It’s obvious this is not Ole’s signing but the scout/system’s. Ole doesn’t even pretend to care. 
Clearly not doing enough in training to gain the Managers trust, and the anonynimty of 95% his cameos don't earn him anything. Blame Ole but if he thought VDB gives us a better chance of winning games he would be in the team.

Its impossible he would have been worse as a CM than Matic or Fred, EVEN if its not his strongest position.
People were calling for him to replace Matic in the second half, but the guy is not a defensive midfielder. I honestly still don't know what his best position is. Ole will have to sort it out.
The problem is that while those have all had poor games, they all showed ability too. Donny in 30+ appearances even with a lot of them being subs, all he ever does is get the ball and pass it back or sideways to the nearest man.
I'm guessing it's reasonably likely he's not showing much more in training either.

Not even had the chance to show what is capable of... so what"s the point? Some not United standard players played on a regular basis for years.
How come Matic plays ahead of him. What's the point of signing him if we never play him?
Given the opposition, and the way they press, he would have been ideal for playing this game with how he likes to release the ball quickly and move and pass.

Clearly I do because, as predicted, he's been awful. This is nothing new. He just doesn't have De Jong carrying the entire midfield for him here.

True, for all their flaws they bring something useful, being tidily anonymous is not a valuable attribute in the PL.
If he can't get a start in midfield next week after that shower, then there really isn't much point in him being here
Move/keep Pogba left and get VDB close to the pen box. It's an option, besides these players aren't playing like wingers so they'd have freedom to come on the inside

If the alternative was between signing him or no CM, any manager would not veto it.
I suspect that’s happened with Fred under Mou too. A scouting signing that manager doesn’t like but no alternative. Both managers show similar approach.
Donny's last game vs. Everton in pre-season was excellent. Reward? Zero minutes in pre-season and in regular season since.
A good performance merits minutes, right? If you don't play some minutes on the back of a good game then however will you build momentum? However will you feel motivated to have a good game when even a good performance itself doesn't promise you even sub minutes?
You can put this one Donny, and you should; but let's be honest. He'd have gotten more minutes under Pep, Tuchel and Klopp......and would have looked better for it.

Today he has played 60min with nobody/invisible as 9 so...I thought a "shadow striker" was something else.
I predict he'll have one of the biggest performance threads in here this season...despite not having any actual performances.

Somebody over nobody as 30mil+ backup in a covid environment where funds are hard to come by? Highly doubt that given Ole's shown readiness to plan long term and wait for the right players that he wants like Sancho.
Too easy to wash your hands off a deal by just saying I never wanted him. We aren't City with limitless cash. Given how it's gone so far, we'll struggle to get decent offers now for him.

Did anyone really think he could cut it as a CM in the PL? I'll not pretend to have followed his career at Ajax in detail but even there, was he upto much in a proper middle 2? Genuinely curious because the little that I saw of him was a typical Ajax attacking mid. Great at quick pass and move systems and needs a team that plays that way to do well. We're miles from it, we need the individual quality that he simply hasn't shown and to make it worse, he's at his best where Bruno operates.
I don't think there will be too many games where he will play CM, not with the crazy attacking options we have now anyway. Pogba will partner Fred/McT when we go with a proper front 4 and VDB is a bit fecked given Bruno always plays.
It'll just become a transfer that'll get worse with time and neither Ole nor the scouting team can wash their hands off it completely.

Score about 6 goals a season, miss 3months a year injured, yet still be heralded as a player we should put 50-60m into.
Ajax plays with 3 midfielders, not with 2 and a attacking midfielder. VDB might've been the most attacking midfielder, he wasn't a real attacking midfielder like Fernandes. So unless Ole was changing the system, this transfer would never work. But after a year and the first 2 matches now, i think we can safely say it's never going to work for him at United
Wasted at this football club if he can’t even get on in games such as this. Hope he can get his career on back on track.
This is the only reason I have hope for him.
That Ole is waiting for the right CDM to play Pogba and Bruno together. Then he can alternate playing VDB occasionally instead of them or more hopefully at the top like a tip of diamond player.
I just don't think Ole knows how to use him though.
To be perfectly honest, if he’s behind Lingard at this stage we might as well sell him and use the money towards a midfielder we will actually play.
If we sign a DM, this guy will be lucky to be in the match day squad.
