It would be absolutely ludicrous offering him a years extension.
Actually hadn’t realised just how much his contract was worth, til seeing he’d eagerly signed the current deal back in 2019, amid all the other lunacy that defined the Ole/ Woodward/Judge, era.

The best business we can do this summer (other than a striker) is to let him walk, free ourselves of his ridiculous £375,000 a week wages and replace him with someone not so fecking meek.

We need to be balls deep in Onana.
Was hoping we’d make more progress with the Da Costa link.

11th best paid player in the world. 8th if you exclude Ronaldo, Oscar and Iniesta outside Europe.

Whatever happens, its a shit show, that should have been concluded earlier.

If he leaves, hes gone (which imo is great for the club) but for him and the fans, cant really have a proper goodbye. Whether hes a legend or not, is up to you and your own definition. Hes been a long standing servant though (over 10 years). And he has the record for most clean sheets and has won a league with us / multiple POTY.
If he stays, then its a bonkers decision now (as he really should have been moved on about five years ago).

Either way, its been handled so badly.

I do wonder if we (or at least ETH) knew he didn't want to keep him, but because everything went down to the last game we were worried about De Gea falling apart or destroying his confidence and costing us if we made it official while the season was still going. De Gea does have a tendency to struggle when the pressure is on. Hell, he ended up costing us in the FA Cup final anyway.

And now we don't want to make it official as soon as the season is over and make it look like we were negotiating in bad faith, so we're letting it go a few weeks. Plus having him still as an option might help us in negotiations for a new #1.

If he does leave I presume he will get a testimonial so we can have a proper goodbye, whether this off-season or in 12 months if we can't organise it in time.

Maybe, that's a good theory and makes sense. The worry would be if we knew we didn't wanna keep him and haven't really put much in motion to replacing him

Thank you, next. Please don't resign him. Get Diogo Costa from Porto for less than half the wages.

You simply cannot build a winning team by overpaying a high-level shot-stopper, who has concentration lapses and also can't pass the ball well. Our goalkeeper salary outlay is the same as the entire squad budget for bottom EPL teams. And none of them light the world on fire.

DeGea was great arguably under the worst collection of United managers leading to us playing like a mediocre football that needed a great shot-stopper to survive. Now that we are trying to play top football again, he looks decent but hardly worth what we pay him.

A lot of details missing. DDG wants to stay and be paid his current wage. United are delaying because they want him to stay on a much lower wage. It's just business.

You obviously can't blame him, in his position I'd love nothing more than another year at my ludicrous salary.

There's a definite game of chicken going on, if we don't sign another goal keeper then it's possible that the club blinks first and activates the extension.

A serious club would have simply given DDG until the end of last season to accept the new contract. If he’d said no they should have immediately started the recruitment process for his successor. Being held to ransom by one of our worst performing and most overpaid players is ridiculous.

IMO having him stick around as our no. 2 keeper and potentially be a disruptive influence in the squad was always a bad idea, so if he does leave it’ll be for the best. They should just get on with it though.

This is the issue we're now creating. If De Gea leaves before another keeper comes in then clubs will take us to ransom.

If agents do their job well any replacement goalkeeper will be getting a ludicrous salary as well.

Thing is there are enough keepers out there of similar-ish quality that we can use the threat of walking away from one player in favour of another if things get silly.

I’m not up to date with this because I expected him to sign a new deal

What actually happens if no new deal is agreed by July 1st? Does his contract roll over or would he be officially gone?
We have an option to extend his contract by a further year, on his current salary, but if we don’t activate the option he leaves. It’s not an auto-renewal

Please for once in our lives, be decisive, get the new keeper in and let DDG go.

We have Henderson still, so not that big a problem.

If we sell him before we get a replacement then there will be problems.

The fact that there is such a situation at all is a mess.

Henderson is stuck in limbo, because of the DDG situation, and because of both these situations, we are not clear if we will go for a new keeper or not.

From the sounds of the report the club were keen to sign him up but ETH has pulled the plug. I suspect those at the club think keeping De Gea is a better option than having to go out and sign a new keeper, but ETH has put them straight and put his foot down on this one.

We might actually have a modern ball playing sweeper keeper playing for us next season. That would be nice.

This. Now is the right time to do it. Hopefully sense prevails.
Not much has made sense with the Glaziers has it though. Seems to have slightly improved since their lapdog left the club and Arnold came in.

But I'm all for not renewing and moving on. We simply can't have a "backup" keeper sitting on the bench on £200k p/w as I don't see him taking anything less than that if he's on £375k now. I'd be slightly happier where he to accept £100k and a back-up position (still a lot compared to other keepers) that might work but I can't see him doing that at all.

I don't think we'll see much transfer activity until the new owner is agreed, so get ready for a messy / stressful summer transfer window

There's not even the slightest chance he can earn more elsewhere this time, so the power should all be in our hands.

If we have enough in the budget we should look elsewhere, but if we can't do it this year a renewal, for way lower money is the way forward.

I know we generally leave our business late, but may leave ourselves reliant on Henderson/Heaton at this rate.

I'd like to think if EtH wanted him to stay it would have been done by now. Leaving it until the last seconds of the expiry date just sounds incompetent

The delay and lack of decisive action is the farcical bit. Common sense would be letting him go without dithering.
The delay and lack of action is an action. It’s a clear message to De Gea that we’re not sure, based on your performances, you’re worth this new contract, and along with the manager we need time to discuss whether we should go ahead and sign a new first team GK or a back up GK.

Someone else mentioned it might be planned with DDG to allow him to leave with dignity, he is a long serving first team player. I don’t actually think that’s a crazy idea, it’s a new dawn for us under ETH but there’s no reason to kick players out (i.e. brief the media he’s not wanted) if we can let them leave in a professional manner.

Surely the dressing room want him gone? Imagine being a player and knowing you’ll be playing alongside him next season again? Might as well give up in most big games, you’re at his mercy in every crunch situation. You’ll have to hope the opposition are worse than he is to win anything.

I'm a bit surprised with these stats, and they make an ugly picture. I felt De Gea was good for a long spell midseason, making world class saves in several matches. After the season seen as a whole, I'm not convinced that he'll do another season as first choice, and it seems like Ten Hag is unconvinced too. De Gea could have saved his United career with a stronger end of the season. Instead, it became evident that his distribution is a real problem for the team.

Surprised we are not interested in Vicario who is getting linke dwith SPurs now. £20m and a very promising keeper, much better than Hnderson who he replaces probably on a negative net spend both on transfer fee and wages, a quality second choice to provide viable competition to a ne number one.

Personally not totally convinced by Onana who seems heavily linked and popula ron here. Like his calmness on the ball, and he plays it our well AT the back, but his longer passing doesnt look great to me and I think he is a "good" keeper and a modern one, but not a great one. Think at £50m he is pretty expensive and dont have confidence in him being a great number one, prefer some of the cheaper options an dthink Spurs for all they hav edone wrong seem to be gettign good deals out of Serie A, Bentancaur is a very good player, Eomero I think is a top centre back who needs the right team and partner and Kulusevski though quiter this season and if they get Vicario, they have been good value signings with the exception of Romero maybe price wise.

Was always 50/50 on DeGea but the way he finished the season made my mind up. His career here had been under rated, especially in the elast few years with the modern keeper trend but he hasnt had a great season in a long time now, the good ones have still had error strewn spells. It is time to move on, but whatever the stats brigade say, as a personality, professional and experienced keeper, he isnt so easily replacable as people seem to say, it has been a huge burden being number one here for a lot of very good keepers
