He was looking at the notes. He had to trust them but they were all fecking wrong. Imagine he ignored it and then it went in. He'd get killed. So it's not his fault tbf.

Best and worst of him.

Folk who want him to stay will point to the great save from Mitoma.

The rest of us will point to the fact that he’s a bag of nerves and contributes to the fact that we had to play like a Big Sam side.

He is also the worst goalkeeper at penalties I’ve ever seen. Even the other half, who doesn’t watch football, asked why he was just flopping to the ground like a dying seal each time.

Again, a great save at an important moment, but so much wrong with that performance, too.

He dived the same way for most of theirs, which they took advantage of. Thankfully they blazed one over. He reminds me of Lloris at Spurs at this stage of his career, a confident personality who has great stature but is well past his best.

He really didn't make some oustanding saves. Free kick to his side isn't outstanding save, if he doesn't save that it's his fault. That shot from the volley was good, but he had clear vision and again good keeper should be saving that. Brighton keeper had the best save of the game easily.

Good game overall though, but he is embarassing on penalties and could have cost us a game like he did so many times on penalties.
Pete said he made 2 class saves. You didn't even mention the one he said was his best.

Are we back to thinking a goalkeeper who doesn't let two shots straight at him in is now world class? Shambles as usual.
This. The praise is so OTT it's absurd.

Harsh, he was fine today, but we can certainly upgrade especially considering the wages he gets.

Defending is done as a team. Some of those clean sheets include one difficult save that most gk don’t make.

Bad gk don’t get so many clean sheets, period.

And many of the goals he allows other keepers don't even allow a shot from because they aren't stuck on their line letting people head it from 4 yards

Dont over think it.

Pep came in and immediately realised Joe Hart wasnt up to the task and signed a keeper he thought was good. A year later after one season he binned him and signed a replacement. One thing you can say about Pep, he knows what he wants/likes and doesnt waste time.

Ten Hag has to move with the same ruthlessness. Theres no time for sentimentality.

Yeah let's forget bravo almost cost city top four and karius was directly responsible for Liverpool getting humiliated in a CL final. Brilliant.

The saves might not have been mind-blowing but the performance has to be taken in the context of the mare he had against Sevilla. There was extra pressure on him today but he played well.

How many of the saddos in here were actively rooting for a Brighton win during the pk shootout?

I honestly forgot there was any better aside from those two? Can you remind me?

He was one of Motm. But now it is about how bad he is on pens? Come on guys ffs.
It's not just the penalties. They weren't great efforts, but let's look at the 120 mins.

There were a few aspects of his game on display today. Shot stopping was good, no mistakes. But he gave it away all the time with directionless hoofs. That obviously contributes to the control Brighton can get in the game and then we come under more pressure and concede more chances that he has to then save. I am sure it is an instruction, but it either wasn't executed well or simply didn't work against Brighton.

It's not a great or MOTM display just because the result goes our way. It's a good display, because ultimately he did make the required saves and no big handling errors.

Who said forget it? I said both Klopp and Pep went to replace the keepers they bought. They didnt hang around for the right keeper to become available when they knew they had the wrong keepers for their systems.

He didn't mess up his shot stopping, I don't want to be too harsh there. But the team heavily compensated for his lack of ability on the ball and inability to come off his line this game. And he still punted it to the opposition every time he had the ball.

They were good solid saves, but it's not like they were amazing or anything. If any of them hadn't been saved we'd be talking about them being a big goalkeeping mistake. Sanchez save in extra-time was the most difficult in the match and even that wasn't 'that' hard.

The shot through freds legs down low to his left that he was going the other way for initially. I actually didn't think it was that special but Pete said it was his best and a very difficult save so I'll take his word

Luckily for Dave you can still win a penalty shootout without saving a single kick!

GET IN!

He was once a decent keeper but football has changed so much in such a short period.

ETH should be allowed to bring in players who fit his style of football and sell/release others who don't.

Yeah, dived right for 5 out of the 7 penalties. Only recall one of their pens going towards DDGs right hand side but might be wrong.

He's pretty shocking at penalties still. Had a decent game though. His post match interview was interesting I thought, I'm no body language expert but I did feel like he knew his time at the club was coming to an end.

Just another good game by Save Dave. Helped by having two good CBs screening him.

Great game apart from the shootout, though you'd suspect most of them were just sending him the wrong way, (so if he dived the"right" way they'd have just gone the other side)

It was tricky save, but I thought that was pretty close to him, wasn't it?

Another clean sheet. Fantastic saves especially the reaction stop over the bar. Most keepers aren't getting that.

Yeah. ANyone that ever try as Gk could tell that kind of ball curve changing direction is one of the hardest to save. And such a close distance as well.

Were still going with the most keepers aren't saving stuff eh?

I think it's the shift in weight that makes it the hardest of the saves. It's not an easy thing to do but you still expect him to save it, which he did.
I think all saves in this game are ones you expect most top keepers to save

Dream scenario: De Gea doesn't get a contract, finishes the season as the goalkeeper with the most appearances for the club, saves a penalty against City to win us the FA Cup final, rides off into the sunset with us all saying nice things about him.

Well yeah, but every goal we concede for the next five years would be met with "we should have given De Gea the money" :wenger:

It will never happen but if somehow the final goes to pens surely someone has to consider a switch

Unfortunately, Butland's record is just as bad as De Gea, and Heaton is only marginally better overall and hasn't saved one since 2016.
