People seriously criticising him for the penalties are just being daft.

Yes, there are some keepers who are better than others at them, but generally quite a lot just comes down to luck.

Nothing to be critical of here. Dealt with the game in his own way. Good effort today.

Well clearly United are going with the same attitude. Keep believing that it’s luck and you will never save one

A one-off penalty, sure - plenty of luck involved there.

Multiple shootouts and dozens of penalties faced is a large enough sample size where you can disregard luck as an important factor.

I'm generally a pretty big critic of Dave's. I just don't think that being poor at penalties is a particularly big issue with him.

Most goalkeepers don't save very many penalties and, if my memory serves me right, I think Dave's record is actually slightly better than average.

Well you don’t have to look too far. The stats are on this page itself . Of the last 54 penalties he has faced that were on target he has saved 2 which is basically way below average numbers

Thank feck March blazed his penalty because this fella wasn't getting to any penalties as long as they were on target.

Sanchez, the one that many here are wanking off, didn't save a single one as well.

His inability to play out is the reason we went long today and ceeded control of the match to Brighton and were left feeding of scraps. Everytime it went back to him it got hoofed. All but i think one Goal kick got launched and most started a nice spell of Brighton possession.

There is no way on this planet that is how ten hag wants us to play. It was tactic we were forced to use today because De Gea can not play as the extra man in the build up.

He made a couple of good saves today fair enough but the underlying issue ls with his inability to play out will continue to plauge us until he leaves

He actually had one world class save when the shot was going on the ground (around 83rd minute). Other than that pretty usual game from Dave, sometimes good, sometimes not so much. Overall a decent game but I hope he doesn't need to play any more penalty shootout for United.

It also had a lot to do with Brighton's press and not having Martinez back there. It isn't all on De Gea.

Can’t wait till his last game for the club. He’s been a great servant but we should have moved on from him years ago. The game has passed him by and we need a modern goalie.

I don't normally.

But, he just flops to his right nearly every time.

At least try.

Of the last 54. His overall record is less bad:

Yes, but his silent domination of the penalty shootout.

Casemiro telling him to dance around a bit and distract takers. He's right. Given how shit de Gea is at them, he needs to pull out all the dark arts to give himself and advantage like Emi Martinez does.

Looked like he was destined to save the penalty that went over. He isnt good at penalties but otherwise he had a decent game.

I always cringe when it comes to penalties with DeGea for reasons we all know. However, despite him not saving any again we need to think positive! If he wasn’t in goal we may of not reached the final.
let’s hope we can stop the noisy neighbours doing the treble.

Superb goal keeping display today. Kept us in the game has he has done many hundred times In the past.
Hes not great on pens which is odd for someone with his reflex saving ability.

the pens were all well taken until the miss. de gea was great in the game but to be honest i would always have a pen expert on the bench that i would bring on for a pen shootout with de gea. and i think he would be ok with it

We would have lost without him today.
De Gea made a few decent seasons, he didn't have a bad game but he didn't save us. He did his job, just like Robert Sanchez did for them. None of his saves were saves that you wouldn't expect a keeper to make. Still has to save them and I don't want to criticize him for anything from open play, but like... Let's not say stuff like this because we'd only have lost if we just didn't have a goalkeeper in net. By no way was he the reason we didn't concede.

Fair play to Casemiro. I was thinking at one stage how undaunting De Gea looked waiting for the penalty to be taken.

They just shot to his left every time. They didn't need to be taken well, they just had to be on target and many of them were pens if de Gea dove left, he would've probably saved.

We’ve reached a point where we’re having to play like a Big Sam team for 120 minutes in an FA cup semi final against a team that is 8th in the league because the manager has clearly lost all faith in De Gea’s ability to play any kind of football on the ground. Watching Brighton continually build from the back while we just hoofed it aimlessly forward everytime was painful. A few good saves do not make up for such a fundamental flaw in his game. It was torture watching him having to hoof pretty much every ball that came his way because he can’t be trusted to not give it away in a dangerous position if he tries anything else. This cannot be allowed to continue. He has to be replaced this summer if we have any ambitions of becoming a top team again.

The people that want him to stay/think he’s good enough must just want to sabotage the team. That can be the only explanation at this point.

He made a couple of good saves and one very good save I thought.

However you can't be a top side and have a keeper who has to just lump it forward every time he has the ball because he can't be trusted with it. It was ok for today but it's in no way sustainable. It was brutal to watch.

As for the shootout he was as hopeless as usual. He really is terrible when it comes to penalties.

I'm nearly sure I read that there are now rules that forbid goalkeepers from shithousery for penalty shootouts. Implemented after Martinez antics for Argentina in the World Cup.

Nah, they don't want to change because another keeper might just prove that they were wrong about DDG all along.

I've been saying it to people for years, he really isn't all that, one of the most over rated keepers I can remember in all my time watching football.

Think you pretty much have to stand still until you dive now.

I would love to know the succes rate of his long passes today. Seemed completely braindead to just hoof the ball every time. I know we can't trust him to play out from the back either but with Rashy and Martial up top, there was absolutely no chance they would ever win a battle against the Brighton defenders. We basically just gave the ball back to Brighton every time de Gea kicked the ball.

Don't they come into effect from next season?

They want to implement it, not yet implemented. Also - it's a shoot out, just do it and take the yellow if that's what happens. Stupid rule anyway IMO. Jumping around and waving arms won't be cut out anyway. That's more fecking up the penalty spot, getting in the other players face and shit talking. Either way it's dumb, but either way doesn't apply yet and even if it did, they should still do it. There's enough advantages to the attacker, the goalkeeper should take everything they can get.

Played well today, give him credit-although i was shouting at the screen during the penalties "just get near one at least, that's all i ask"

Question for older fans but have we ever had a great penalty saving keeper at United? I never had Schmiechal as a great penalty stopper though he had a few charity shield wins on shoot outs and of course the Overmars spot kick in 99. VDS, again, good and probably the best we've had but not amazing.
