Seen they were directing a lot of abuse down at the Uruguayan players and Nunez reacted by trying to throw a chair into the stands, wasn’t too worried about the safety of families doing that. Even entering the stands the only thing he had in his mind was to create more mayhem. Needs to be banned for a long time, and applied as a worldwide ban rather than just national team involvement.

Why would you want to help Liverpool

Football isn't dead. It just lives in South America

In fairness, the blonde woman you see pitch side on the top right corner holding a kid before starting this video are his wife and son.

I would also go berserk if I felt they were threatened.

From what I hear from others present at the game, the security response at the stadium was timid and plain dogshit. 99% of the fans were mixed and friendly, of course, but you only need a handful of idiots.

These same stadiums will be holding a World Cup with 48 teams in 2026, so better take notice and correct.

:nervous:

Unreal that actually happened

I can understand the sentiment behind the commentator saying "it's unfortunate that this has happened" but Copa America has been a fun watch this year compared to the sterile Euros and this is icing on the cake.

For the sake of your partner and kids, I sincerely hope you’re wrong. If your kids get abused or attacked in a strange country in a place among thousands of people where you don’t know who are hostil, neutral or friendly, I really hope your first instinct is to calm things down and help get them to safety. Going berzerk is only going to put them in greater danger than they originally were, and suddenly you will be their biggest problem. His kid and wife is not going to be better off if they end up having a dad who sparked off a Heysel tragedy. That instinct you see there, is not protective, it’s vicariously self assertive.

They were pitch side and safe, he is venting off / seeking retribution. Feck knows what she said to him (there's another video where you see he kicks off and climbs to the stand after she goes up to him). Stupid mostly because he puts his career at risk, not for protecting his own.

Can't they just put the families of the players in a box at these stadiums? I presume this venue will be a World cup host in two year's time? Or properly segregate the section away from the other fans.

I think it's a good thing it comes up and gets looked into at player and FA level, not just FIFA.

It's not as easy as one would think. FAs get a certain number of tickets "in a box" but how they allocate them varies across countries.

With Uruguay, players usually don't just have their wife and kids but mom, dad, siblings, in-laws, nephews, distant cousins... You are talking 40-50 people easily, even more at the World Cup. The FA offer immediate family but they want to hang around together so usually buy the block of seats behind the dugout.

You can't plan game by game/team by team for those idiosyncracies. FIFA can only offer a plan based on VIP boxes of sorts but need players to go with that and not the Big Fat Greek Wedding approach.

no...i wasn't condoning anything. I just wrote what was being translated during one of the interviews as their explanation of why they went up into the stands.

It was absolutely foolish and clearly any player that went into the stands and engaged/attacked the supporters should have a sanctioned ban. You can't have that. It's a bad look for Uruguay, Copa America and quite frankly the US as the host for not having security to stop it from happening.

I think that the main problem it's booze and putting the families of the players beside the Uruguayan bench without proper protection and this protection being preventive and not reactive.

USA doesn't have a hooligan/barras problem like in SA and Europe, but the issue with the mostly friendly atmosphere and fans being all together it's that since they can sell booze, even some nice fella can be an arse while being wasted, there is always the couple of fellas that get wasted and do stupid stuff or go over the top with the banter. I just remember lots of vids in Qatar were even if booze was banned, many drunk fans were constantly provoking rival fans, it's sthg that authorities must be alert.

It doesn't matter if by the time the Uruguayan players were fighting the drunk fellas their families were already in the pitch or not, the thing is that if a family member comes to you and tell you that somebody has been throwing stuff to you, you'll react most of the times and asking to react in a proper manner after such an intense match and worse after loosingt, it's asking a bit too much, all of these could be prevented.
Booze would not be prohibited because it's inherent to the american sport spectacles, but to the very least they should protect better the family of the players and the players too from drunk fans. There were too many organizative stuff really below par in this Copa, worrying with the WC everyday closer.

I'm not saying that to fight those fans it's the correct reaction, many UY players are indeed hotheaded without any "help", but this particular problem with the families on the stand and the rivals fans so close to the UY bench without preventive protection could have been easily avoided.

Agreed. I am surprised that family members are not in a restricted section (like in the club level) where they are more insulated from drunken idiots.

the problem is as soon as the players went into the stands it completely escalated to out of control

Nothing to worry about in my opinion. These are all learnings for the WC and is why the US decided to host both the Copa America and the new CWC in 2025. To prep for 2026.

Also, FIFA will be far more involved with the organization to make the event a success. The WC is their golden goose, they won’t mess it up.

To add, 94 WC is still the most successful WC in terms in attendance and income generated.

The US hosts large scale sporting events all the time. The world cup will be a success.

i attended the Netherlands/Ireland match in 1994 at the Orlando venue and it was fecking brilliant...hot as a MF...but brilliant

Had a great time partying with both sets of supporters and it was rowdy but quite peaceful due to probably a big police presence

Just saw a video of Suarez right after match finished and it really looks like he tried to bite another person. If curious I found it on Reddit r/soccer.

I can understand why they enter the stand to protect their families - most of us would. But that doesn't change the fact that they can't be allowed to do it.

But at the same time - you can't exactly ban the entire Uruguayan team either. So I feel they will make an example of the worst culprits and let everyone else off with fines. How involved were Pellistri and Ugarte ?

James MOTM performances, Suarez biting people... feels like 2014 all over again.

All that's left for the comparison is a bad Argentina performance in the final where they miss a bunch of chances.

Bets for the final?

I’m taking Romero in the 5th Round.

It’s a weird one though. Colombia has definitely played the best football this tournament, but this generation of players has never sniffed silverware and they’ll be more nervous for the final. I think Argentina will win, only because once a crop of players gets accustomed to winning, it becomes a relentless cycle.
