On one hand, he works hard consistently and at least keeps possession pretty well.

On the other hand, he's absolutely horrid to watch, has no clue how to attack his fullback, has annoying face gestures and has the whole domestic abuse accusation thing hanging over him which doesn't help his likability, even if we don't know what happened one way or another.

So yeah, thats not good for him on balance. Will be glad when he leaves.

It is going to be very interesting what players will be brought to the club in the near future and which existing ones are shown the door.

Sadly we bought a 15-20 million footballer for 80 million. There is no way to undo that kind of financial carnage. Nobody stupid enough to help us recover it. If he'd shown some talent but inconsistency or there was something to grasp onto to show a real player lurking in there maybe someone would throw 30-40 million at us. But we've seen very little so that's not going to happen.
Everyone include in this deal from our side should be immediately get fired plus a 10 years banned from Old Trafford.

That includes our manager (who initiate the move), sports director (responsible for players transfer/fee), scouts (those responsible for scouting/recommend Antony if they exist).

He looks far more effective because he doesn’t play for United. Put prime Robben in this Utd side and he would look like Antony
Thats crazy take. Prime Robben would look at least better than Garnacho here, who looks far better than Antony already. Unless you think Garnacho equals to prime Messi.

For a long time I was convinced that Sanchez was our worst ever transfer, but nope, it's Antony. He makes the Sanchez that United got look world class.

Can't pass, can't dribble, can't shoot, can't beat defenders for pace and top it off, acts like a detestable angry scrote on the pitch. Horrible player

Ole and our scouts checked him out and had a report that said he was a 25m player. I don't think our scouts get much say in transfers they give their report on a player and the board and manager make their choice. Apparently our scouts didn't want amrabat and we still got him.

What about all the posters that wanted us to sign him and all the ones that raved about him after his first few games

Antony was 'ok' last season. Not good, but also not as bad as a lot of people make out. Of course he had both good and bad periods, but overall he was 'ok'. It was a better season than Sancho has ever had for us for example, although of course that is an extremely low bar.

This season he started terribly, looked like he was just starting to get into form before he had his issue in Brazil where he was away for a month, came back and was terrible again but then had a couple of good games. At that point I'm thinking he just needs a couple of games to get back up to speed, which isn't great but at least he should hopefully continue playing decently well. Unfortunately he's fallen right back off and has been terrible again the last month or so.

In the last two games hopefully we've seen the two options that will carry us forward and prove to be much more effective. Firstly Garnacho moving over to the right with Rashford on the left, and then Amad coming on and being quite impressive today. Both looked good in those individual games, so we just need a bit of time to see if they can be consistent.

The red flags on him were always there. Very middling Dutch league production and never seemed to have the raw physical tools to look past that. But honestly I was just glad we finally got a left footed right winger. And then I watched him play for about 2 months and realized we made a huge mistake.

I’m sorry but I can’t stand when people call a player “inconsistent” when that player has never had anything above a 7/10 game aside from maybe ONCE in his career at the club. Inconsistent players are those that can possibly win a match for you one game then be poor the next. Antony has never shown a high enough level to be labeled that.

Championship player. Perhaps a few mil in today's market but that's about it. He's bang average amongst all the leagues.

Obviously why we bought him was because we appointed Erik and we had to back the coach but I watched the vid of Malacia having him in his back pocket in one game and he only cost us 14mil so things just did not add up.

I would seriously consider loaning him out, and after a decent season we just sell him to whoever wants to take a risk with this guy. His market value nosedived for the reasons you mentioned, I don't think we're selling him in next 2 windows.

remember how we used to call Stewart Downing false winger when he was at Liverpool? that's Anthony now.

I seem to remember a video on YouTube that was meant to show all of Downing's assists for Pool in a certain season, and the video was just a black screen for a couple of minutes... seemed funny at the time.

In my time as a Utd fan, which is 20 years now, this is the worst winger I have seen (Obertan and Bebe does not count). Young and Valencia used to boil my blood, but they are streets ahead of anything he has ever produced.

-Young had pace and very good shot and great cross in him.
-Valencia had crosses and pace plus physically he was a monster

With him he does not have pace, physically he is feeble, can't cross, can't dribble, shooting is shit. His only attribute is, that he occupies the right hand side and stretch the pitch and work hard defensively. For the money we have spent on him, he should have been De Bruyne or Haaland type signing for us, instead he appears to be in line for record of most appearances without a goal and assist. Shocking signing and for all the other faults of ETH, he should be sacked for this signing only.

Oh yes. I never much liked or cared for Young,
but I adored Valencia, and seeing him turn into an often-shit performer for United was hard to watch.
If memory serves me, some on here used to defend him to the hilt.

But as you say, this is night and day from Antony.
I haven't watched a single game of Everton this season bar the one they played against us-

but I'm willing to bet my ass that a geriatric Ashley Young still contributes more to his team than what Antony does for us.

He had an okay season at the beginning of last season because he was new to the league. Every team now knows who he is and what he can do, which is pretty much zip.

They all know he has no pace, no tricks and cannot use his weaker foot at all. They all know they can happily leave him 1v1 because he literally cannot beat a man, and if the player shows him outside he cannot do a think.

It's no surprise players get worse in a new league. However, even on his best performance, he was leagues and leagues below what we expect from our wingers. To think a few years before we had Zaha and we could have had a free run at Mahrez.

I would be laughing my head off if it wasn't my club.

I’m not even angry with him, he’s clearly way out of his depth. The manager however should be sacked for thinking he would improve the team after working with him for years.

There needs to be an investigation of corruption. I don't believe for one second anyone worked with him for 2 years and thought he was an 80 mill signing. Pogba, Maguire, Sancho didn't work but you could see the thinking behind it. No one in thier right mind would think Antony has what it takes. He lacks the basic tools.

In contention for the worst transfer in the history of football. Erik ten Hag and John Murtough must be sacked solely on the basis of this transfer. Their staggering incompetence borders on malice.

Exactly. I read an article a year ago that Antony was dismissed 2 times from senior Sao Paolo team and was lucky to get back 2 times. How did he end up at Manchester United is borderline amazing. And it's not even his fault.

Antony's transfer was done through SEG agency, the same agency of Ten Hag and where his son works.

I haven’t forgotten the think pieces from our resident ‘experts’ on how he’d be part of the radical shift to a possession based team and all the balance he’d offer. At the end of the season there were still some blaming everyone else for his poor form be it now overlapping RB or no striker. This lad could have Cafu playing behind him and Van Basten up front and still be shite.

I spotted it within his first 10 games that he was a joke, probably even before that just looking at his Ajax videos but you had crazy people claiming he could be a new Robben.

He's worse this season because he's been figured out completely by teams and has nothing to his game. Full backs are getting tighter because they know he can't beat them for pace or will always chop back on his right. Goalkeepers know he's always looking far post and already have taken a step to the right before he's shot.

I hope the thing I read about Ineos terminating contracts rather than letting players drift and take up space in the sqaud is true, it'd be quite a statement to terminate the contracts of Sancho and Antony in the summer if there end up been no takers on the wages they're on.

Can't blame the fans as I bet they are not even familiar with the player before he signed for us, and just putting their blind faith on him because they trust the new manager or something. Also I remember there were big concerns on his numbers in poor league, and the price tag too. in the end fans just went with the notion that the player is going to explode soon because they trust ETH should know his stuffs or something, and we are buying a player who is perfect for ETH system, and on his rise.

However for those who are assigned to work on the deal or initiate the deal should know better. Its basically their paid job and their profession to make sure things went right.

I can understand the criticism of his output but I don't understand the "can't beat a defender" criticism.

First of all, it's 2023, not 1993. The era of flying wingers finding themselves in 30 yards of green space to run at a fat fullback are gone.

Secondly, Antony regularly beats his defender, but then since our attack is so disjointed he's usually completely isolated and inevitably has to turn around and wait for support.

His shooting is frustrating, his goals/assists output is too low (but then look at the rest, barely any better) but there's definitely a hard-working, technically-capable, useful footballer in there and I'd have him in this current team every single week.

Also...forget about the fee. Its not fair to judge a player in relation to a fee. Antony was never an £80m player but our desperation and the timing meant we overpaid by £30m. That's not the players fault.

The amount of no sense in this post :lol:

From a business perspective it doesn't make much sense unless they agree to small pay off (which I doubt they will). We'll be better off sending them out on loan while taking a hit on the wages. They may then rebuild their reputation to have more interested clubs and their wages would be covered partially.

I don't see any way back for him. Last season he could cut in, find space and shoot, albeit terribly. This season every defender just pushes him to use his right leg and of course he can't so he just turns and passes the ball back. He's perpetually stuck near the touch line as every LB in the league knows how to keep him quiet. The noise is getting louder too, pundits and rival fans are starting get on his case as well. Just sell in the summer.

I don't really disagree but there's just something about players like this hanging over the club for years to come which isn't healthy, it's more symbolic than anything.

The article I'm talking about said they admired Arsenal's approach with Pepe and Aubameyang, I'm sure they could have got rid of these two over a few years saving a few million, but they choose to just terminate their deals, which in some ways seems to have been a link to Arsenal pushing to another level.

Antony is going to be a nightmare to shift, so I wouldn't be against the idea if that proves to be the case.
