He looked far better today. Made a few decent saves, nothing outstanding but a few weeks ago he would have let one of those in. I hope he does well As he adds to the team.

It feels like some of his shot stopping errors recently have been down to focusing too much on where he pushes the ball rather than just making sure he gets strong contact behind it to keep it out.

Today he got strong contact on it and let the defenders do their job of clearing the rebound.

Stepped up today. He was good and controlled his box better than he has in other games to date.

I liked it when he claimed a high ball. It scared me when he made the save but the ball bounced away from him. First time when he saved with his wrist instead of his hand and the second time the moment where the commentator wanted to give Sheffield a penalty because Maguire barged the opponent in the back after the opponent already headed the ball away.

Played better ...needs to push the ball away from the danger areas when making saves and that is pretty basic shite!

Couple of untidy moments but generally fine. A game without a howler was important.

He has a habit of pushing a saved ball back into play. De Gea rarely does that. Work on that and keep his focus and Onana will come good.

Nothing spectacular about any of his saves (anyone will save them) but he didn't feck us up this time so I will count this as an improvement.

We’re playing De Gea football with Onana. Just not utilising the things he’s good at and his shot stopping technique is a downgrade on De Gea. Hope it’s a stepping stone to playing better on the ball with a settled defence.

Mentioned this in when the transfer news was heating up for Onana and some folks there were arguing against it. De Gea was very good at parrying the ball away from play - better than most keepers, and watching Onana's clips that was clear. I don't think Onana is particularly bad at it, but I think we as a fan base may have underestimated things that DDG was elite at.

Either way, pleased for Onana as this was a solid performance. Let's hope he builds on it, all the noise settles, and he can show us the elite parts of his own game.

That low save was decent but the rebound gave me Howard porto ptsd.

Genuine question- What should he be doing in that scenario ? I mean he is already on the ground to save it, there is no way he gets the balance to push it out. He does what everyone else does at that moment. Tracking the runner isn't his responsibility.

I am a bit worried, he can't parry a ball to the side. They all go directly into the box again. It's going to become a huge problem. Glad he got away with it tonight.

It’s weird isn’t it. I expected him to transform our play. Instead we have transformed his.

We have to realise, as a team were not putting enough change or pressure and aggression from outfield players to enable this preferred playstyle. It's about survival at this point. Easier for one player to adapt than 10 to adapt. Sad fact.

Our entire first choice defence is out injured- AWB, Varane, Martinez, Shaw. There’s no way the current four should be playing out from the back. Hopefully as players return we start looking more composed

City will fire from all angles. Could be real nasty

Even his decent saves look somewhat clumsy.

One thing de Gea did well at times is throwing the ball quickly to get a (counter) attack started. Onana seems to slow things down.

However, as long as he is not surrounded by the right players we won’t benefit from his strengths.

I can't help but tense up whenever any team takes a shot on goal. It just always looks awkward whenever he makes a save.

Only saw the 1st half but I noticed that he didn't do his annoying stutter step when preparing to launch himself into a save. I'm more convinced it's just a nervous tick he needs to overcome. I hope he comes good.

Commentator yesterday said this was our seventh back four in nine games. We've got no hope of gaining any kind of fluidity or organisation with that.

The save from the low shot outside the box was actually a poor one IMO. He mistimed the dive and the ball seemed to hit the inside of his wrist and was parried back into a dangerous area. Luckily for us Evans was there to clear it.

For years I watch VDS save shots like that and send them as wide away from the goal as possible.

Yup. His technique and timing is so poor.

He’s going to make so many mistakes next week.

Actually Am more worried that his kicking and playing out from the back has become completely non existent.

The new instructions to just hit long to rasmus and rashford is the number one cause of the terrible football we are playing. I dont know why we removed even the basic stuff he was excellent at...he even ignores basic straight forward passes to go long...its shocking

My hope is that this is not a permanent decision because it defeats the purpose of buying him

Better performance. Raya and Sanchez had a mare in the same match, so this is actually a stellar performance if those gks are seen as "class"

Nah VDS was boring so he would have held onto the ball more likely. He wouldnt have caused an ''exciting'' situation where there was a potential Sheffield chance.

Even though he made some (easy) saves, the handling was still atrocious.

I think literally ever very shot he dealt with he put right back into the 6 yard box?
