The amount of time he takes on the ball is infuriating. To be a good passer you need to do it quickly.

It's weird that we got a keeper that's renowned for his ability on the ball and helping his team play out from the back and yet we seem to have no intention of actually playing that way, we revert to long balls far too often and don't give him or the CBs nearly enough support to actually play our way out.
Not playing with the confidence which is understandable. Once he gets the confidence going you'll see a difference player.
To be a good passer you need options to pass to.
He takes time because the pass isnt there. Or do you prefer him to be quick and just smash the ball forward so Burnley can start an attack?
I'm not convinced by him, he made a few saves but they wasn't exactly good shots he seems extremely slow to dive, he just doesn't look comfortable as a keeper.
In that scenario pass it to the defenders right in front of you. That’s what every other keeper does. The alternative was him taking an age and then passing it to the defenders who were always open. All you do is give them time to set themselves.

Not really. He can play it quickly when it's on.
To be a good passer you dont have to move the ball quickly. To move the ball quickly you have to have options, there were times he had no options.
What's he supposed do? Just kick it long?
As a keeper in that scenario you put your foot on the ball and wait for the options to open up.
It's obviously not down to him, we don't really care about speeding up that passing from defence. Rest of defence plays the same.

Looks intentional to me. A combination of him not having options but it also looks like we are trying to invite the press so he can then break it with a good pass.
Yea you do. You could stick Maguire in goal and he’ll do the same. It’s infuriating when our defenders do it and it’s no less so when a keeper is doing it.
He could do what he ended up doing. Pass it to a defender and save us 20 seconds.
Other keepers arent as good on the ball so they want to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible. Onana waits for the press so he can make an actual good pass forward. Opponents arent pressing him and teammates arent offering good options so he keeps the ball instead.
Then his passing ability is useless.

Ederson and Alisson are just as good and don’t take an age. They play it to defenders quickly and they get on with the game.
Maybe it is. It’s not working though. All it does is slow an already slow team.

Why are we not using him for what he's good at. Pretty much since his first game for us he now stays back in the box most of the time. What happened to the high line and using him further up the pitch.

Many teams are doing the same thing where the GK holds on to the ball to bait the press. And once we of Amrabat and Mainoo back, we should see us playing through midfield more often because currently playing through midfield is too risky because it would play into the hands of the opponent who are intentionally leaving Casemiro unmarked.

You need to get with the times. Watch Brighton play. That’s how to break the press. Delay the pass until you’ve dragged someone out of position. Most of the top teams do this now. What he’s doing is very obviously a tactic, rather than a flaw in his game.

That's just not true.
It was obviously down to Burnley pressing with a good shape and cutting off passing lines. He's clearly keeping the ball and waiting for gaps to appear, rather than just hoofing it long at the first chance. There's nothing wrong with him putting his foot on the ball and waiting for a pass to open up. It's up to the other players to open up angles for him to hit the pass, if they don't do it then he's better off waiting a few seconds rather than booting one aimlessy down field.
Exactly. His performance in the CL final against City is a great example of this.
I think that introducing the high line may not be viable when we're playing our 4th and 5th choice centre halves (none of which have any recovery pace) and our second/third choice left back and possibly second-choice right back too (who made a bad error in possession during pre-season which exposed Onana's high position and made him concede a 50-yard lob).
And when they don’t press it slows us down considerably.
