I think he’s very media savvy. Publicly berating Maguire in one of his first appearances to get fans on his side, and now this OTT mea culpa.
Nothing wrong with knowing how to do this stuff, but fans should probably be aware that they’re being played like a fiddle. I only care about his performances, I don’t care how sad he feels when we lose.

I’d think of it more as at least he’s willing to do them.
Might blow your mind to hear about all the goalkeepers playing football every weekend that regularly bollock sloppy defending, despite the absence of cameras.

McTominay could've done with some yesterday. Rashford quite a few times this season. Eriksen is another one. Martinez hasn't been pulling up trees either.
He just went after the easiest target in Maguire. The caf was creaming itself discussing how we finally have a no-nonsense keeper.

I think it is way too early to criticize Onana, yes he messed up and he knows it, its what it is. DDG had massive blunders too.
With that said the whole idea that GKs need to be comfortable with the ball and all, I dont buy into that at all.
They need to be shot stoppers and make saves. The end of.
Its a bonus if they can do a bit more.
I will never consider it a great game by a GK if they had 70 passes, so what. But if they stop 10 shots yeah thats great.

He has not. He made a mistake last night but thats it. He just didnt make saves like prime DDG but neither DDG or any other goalkeeper bar Alisson is able to make saves like prime DDG did.
We've heard this 'must improve' rehetoric from our players before. I'll believe it when he shows it on the pitch.

He’s pretty vocal in fairness. Probably more a case of the Maguire incident being highlighted because it’s Maguire than anything else.
He fecked up but also it was very nice to see that he (finally) tried to claim high balls. Also, he was absolutely amazing with the ball yesterday.

What a load of bollox. When has a goalkeeper ever marched up the pitch to scream at midfielders?!Goalkeepers will often chew out defender who makes a really obvious mistake. For Magure it was getting caught in possession just outside our box when he could easily have passed to Onana instead. So Onana needed to be sure to let him know not to let that happen again. Martinez hasn't been at his best but hasn't been involved in a similar incident, so hasn't got a flea in his ear from his keeper. This is all really basic, trivial stuff that anyone who's ever played football has seen a million time. It's a complete non-event. So weird (yet typical of this place) that you have people reading so much into it.
And that Ajax team missed the CL final by a minute.... no idea why the Ajax part isnt a great asset.

Well that's what it is.
All goalkeeper have howlers occasionally. It was a bad one granted but it happens.
He made a few good saves that kept us in the game and his distribution and playing out allowed us to have a foothold in the game at times aswell. Did well with a few corners that were swung into the 6 yard box aswell.
But disappointed with the lack of sweeping so far, although the defence is starting quite high they seem to keen to drop back to soon creating the space in midfield that teams are playing through, maybe this is just something that needs more work but the defence needs the confidence the keeper is there and willing to sweep to take the risk of holding that high line even under pressure.
I think what we're seeing is the true transition to ETH football, think De Gea held ETH back from being really able to implement his vision and now we are transitioning and just struggling to implement. The tough fixtures obviously haven't helped either.

still think it is what i feared when people were adamant with replacing ddg with a "modern keeper". Prob is the rest of our club really isnt suited to playing out from the back under pressure. So kinda pointless to hyperfocus on the gk aspect of that when the other big pieces arent in place. the modern gk addition should be the final piece of the puzzle, not one of the first ones. I still see onana having to do a lot of long hopefully passes, which is exactly what ddg was forced to do since nobody knows how to properly show for the ball to be able to receive under pressure and continue the passage of play (or perhaps players are just scared to make a mistake and dont want that pressure).
This. And focusing too much on Onana also somewhat absolves how mediocre we've been at the back and in midfield. In fact, its hard to make a believeable case we're performing better at any position compared to last year, and Onana's start is merely a symptom of broader problems we're facing. This is more a management and training problem than anything else.

Depends if that one mistake completely defines his performance. Otherwise, he made several decent stops, dealt very well with a few crosses and was largely very good in possession.
Not really, but nevermind.
Is he playing behind the worst defence in his career? I felt Inter were super solid defensively and Ajax were the most dominant team in their league. Maybe those teams masked his deficiencies a little bit? I still think he's a smashing goalie and I really wanted us to sign him but it's been an almighty struggle for him so far.
It was a pre season game and I think it was because Onana wanted to ball specifically over Maguire just cocking up.
Pure conjecture but I’d imagine given how much press it got, he also might have been asked gently to tone it down outside the dressing room.
For sure there's an element of this,
De Gea being a better shot stopper than Onana got away with it, Onana isn't as good as De Gea in that regards and so the mistakes or minor flaws he has, and he has a few, get highlighted more.
Onana brings good use of the ball and is certainly not shy of claiming crosses, both attributes missing from De Gea, but he has already made a fair few mistakes in his short time at United already, probably due to being in the line of fire more than he'd expect.

Usually we get shite like this from the likes of Shaw and Bruno:"It's our fault, and we need as a team need to do better.", etc. De Gea's and Maguire's mistakes were usually covered by the club and not named, and stuff like that.
