He's only human, De Gea's time here was riddled with mistakes. The important bit is he steps up in future games. He just needs to settle and he will be fine.
I wouldn't think I would see a sensible post in here tonight.

If this was City they’d dump him after a season and spend 80m on a replacement , we don’t have the luxury of screw ups though
If this was City he’d face 2 shots on target a game and be lauded as one of the best goalkeeping playmakers of all time, like Ederson.

Funny thing is, if this was City, he'd be totally fine cos he wouldn't barely have to make a save.

He is basically Ederson.
Exactly. The amount of shots we allow on our goal is insane. Teams play through us with such ease. Midfielders allow runners to run off them and have free attempts on goal multiple times a match. We're going to concede a tonne of goals if we keep allowing this to happen.

He was outstanding for Inter in the champions league run to the final last year. There is no question at all over his shot stopping ability. He just needs to settle into the team and calm down abit. It will come in time.

well there blatantly is, because there was before he came here and he’s now made a mistake in four games this season leading to goals because he failed to save shots.

This.

He made some good saves second half but, my days, he won't wanna watch Bayern's first goal back.

I have always said that what’s matter the most in a goalkeeper is his shot stopping. Being good with his feet is secondary.

That being said, DDG wasn’t the same shot stopper he once was and due to his mistakes needed replacement.

Hope Onana can find form, he was a decent shot stopper for Inter.

BTW, I agree that if he was at City, with no one reaching their goalpost, he will be as highly regarded as Ederson.

Gained a lot of respect for him after his post-match interview… at least he accepts that his start with the club hasn’t been great and it seems like he wants to do better. It might all sound obvious, but there’s plenty of other players that remain blind to their situations and have their heads in the clouds.

Good interview

I don't understand why we have made him stay on his line, it seems so different to pre season.

His passing is gonna be wasted anyway since some of our players can't move into space or do anything once the ball comes to them

The error for Sane's goal was huge and did change the dynamic of the game but there were some redeeming qualities from tonight's game. He was good with the ball at his feet and proactive at set pieces and just those two things set him apart from last season's situation with De Gea.

I like the fact that he's prepared to take ownership over his mistakes as well. There needs to be accountability in this team and not many have the minerals to take it on the chin when they are responsible. Onana needs to do far better in the coming games but we've got an easier run up until City, hopefully that will give him enough opportunity to make a mark. It doesn't help that the defensive structure in front of him is practically non-existent. We continue to beat ourselves by letting teams carve us open at will.

Struggles with the goalkeeping side of the job and his much vaunted passing isn't exactly leading to a big impact on results so far. Pretty underwhelming

He also didn't crumble and make another terrible mistake, which we've seen other goalkeepers do previously. So that's a bonus.

I was defending him before tonight because the goals he's conceded haven't been howlers by any stretch. Felt people were being overly harsh because there was a couple he maybe can save on another day.

Tonight though is very worrying. Letting in a soft shot right close to him is absolutely typical De Gea of the last 5 years, the sort of mistake that made it imperative we force De Gea out the club, reminded me of De Gea vs West Ham last season. Genuinely a shot a lot of us fans could have saved.

Other than that, decent to be fair. The amount of chances we're conceding is just unfair on him. But no excuse for that howler.

Mistakes happen but it's good to see his mentality, both in respect to how pissed off he was and what he said in the interview.

Noticed too that Martinez went to console him immediately after which at least shows the respect between them.

The howler for the 1st goal was awful, but shit happens.
It’s blinding people to the fact he made several very good blocks and saves in this game and kept Bayern from at least another couple of goals.
He had no chance with the 2nd, the penalty, or the one blasted into the roof of the net for their 4th.
The fault for those other 3 goals lies elsewhere, not with Onana.

Howlers can happen occasionally, they are a part of the game when when your role is to be the last line if defence.

Especially when you are under tremendous pressure. New country, new league and a new club. Then, in our last three games, we have conceded 22 shots on target. Not in total, just on target. It wouldn't come as a surprise, of he's feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. Both his previous clubs were very dominant and organised.

At least, he assumed responsibility for his errors and looked a bit more composed in the second half. If there's something really worrying about him thus far, that would be his reaction in Brighton's third goal which was painfully amateurish.

His shot stopping is not as good as prime DDG but the DDG of last couple seasons was very leaky.

I do think Onana has gotten outsized criticism. Our defense and midfield is so porous right now so he’s facing a lot of shots. Good shots at that.

With some of the memes I’ve seen on twitter about “immigration coming for him” I do wonder if he were from Italy or Germany if he’d have been extended more grace….but being that he’s from Cameroon, seems like some people’s inherent biases are coming to the fore front.

DDG’s first season at United started off rocky as well.

I think Onana can and will improve and I like his accountability and mentality. Need more of that on the team.

Honestly, I’d advise him to stop doing the media duties for a while. Fronting up game after game will start to make me people resent you. Maguire, Bruno, De Gea etc. were all the same. Stop apologising. Just let your football do the talking.

Had a great season for Milan last year and like most players, come to us and immediatley get worse.
Did he? I'd argue he let in at least 10 perhaps 14 cheap ones with the kind of defense he had in front of him at Inter, they drew / lost their group in CL and advanced thanks to Barca Fail and had the easiest ride to a final ever. When you dissect his season it's clear he has too many error in him even then.

Is there a video of the goals he conceded? Would be interesting to see how he did in the past since most people here haven't really watched him aside from the CL final.

The man accepted responsibility for his disastrous performance today. All we can do is persevere and hope we can keep a clean sheet against Burnley.

Can't find such a compilation, but his stats on Goals conceded on average was super elite at Ajax but top 4 at Inter. Also Shots against him were in the City range at inter with 88.

Screenshot-20230921-030803-Chrome.jpg

His Napoli counterpart had 99 Shots against him and saved 74.5% and had GA90, goals against / 90 min of elite 0.7

He seem to be error prone the more Shots against and highly dependant on team to play well and allow his risk reward style to blossom.

Poor guy hasn't faced this type of Shots against ratio in his career as he is currently facing with us and it's destroying him.

At some point the value of ball playing goalkeeper diminishes and the successful teams that play like that keep Shots against well below 100. The point where that style seem to diminish is at 80ish shots agains per season, much more than that and the team isnt playing a modern style. We are a team that have had Shots against at 142 last season. Considering this stat Dave actually did well and had a respectful but not elite concession rate of 1.13 every 90 min in his last season.

For reference here are the stats for our last 10 years

As evident De Gea played poorly in 20-21 where we ended 2nd.
We have for a long time given up way too many Shots against at a shockingly bad level and relied on a consistent limping but high save rate, many GK's fully crack under the shot burden De Gea has had to face with us. We sorely need upgrades at CB and DM more than we needed a GK at this phase.

Statistics says he wasn’t among the best shot stopper of Serie A (he was discovering the league)… Actually there are 12 keepers out of 20 who did better than him statistically. But he made up for it in the Champions league where he was simply the best.

14 goals in 6 games. No more excuses for him. And I don't get the whole "Give him credit because he admits his mistakes to the press". Any sane keeper would've done that.

The real question is, if Onana hadn't played for ETH before, would we have signed him? Is Onana really the best available keeper on the market? I just really hope Onana bucks up before the media starts branding him a flop.

Howler today.

I believe he'll be better. I do think our players are shying away too much from receiving the ball in our box or close to it, so he's forced to go long. Don't know if it's instructional or not though.

The few times we do invite a press and play out, we generally look much better with Onana in there than before, but it's too infrequent at the moment.

Hindsight is what it is but De Gea should have stayed until we actually had a team in front who can defend properly. Anyone with less shotstopping ability than De Gea would always get roasted here.
One or two quality CBs along with two- three CMs that can actually defend a bit would go a long way to help us. Hopefully Amrabat can be the start of that. 14 goals conceded so far is just poor.

Should he have come out for the 4th? Striker seemed to have an age as the defence and keeper stood off.

Nah ddg has shown to not be good enough. If anything should've just given kovar a chance to perhaps become a miracle worker and crush it at his young age and use that onana money to add todibo and another signing. Would've been crazy to go with kovar but the way things are going with onana so far wouldn't have mattered much

That's a man speaking, respect. With this mentality he'll improve.
Gets respect from me. Dont get the love for bashing new players and at least he has the right attitude. I also felt that his passing was very good and we finally utilized it. Go on Andre
