A floppy gk is the worst for the confidence of the whole defence. He made a very good save after the 2-1 mind
I like his passing game but I rate Heaton more at this point. Any good attempt towards either post seems to go in. He can't be filling the team with much confidence
Have you seen the Turkish guy's vids? He looks a lot worse! Heaton is our best bet, I feel
I do think there is a good keeper there, he just needs to switch on mentally - I honestly believe his thought processes were altered simply by the Villa player being stood behind him before the ball was whipped in for their first goal.
He can't let something like that distract him, of course opposition players are going to try things to unsettle him - he needs to switch on and tune in to this league!

No they were actually good claims and punches. My point is that he's plenty capable but so inconsistent with his attempts and positioning.
I was speaking more generally rather than those specific instances. I agree and makes me have very little confidence when he does come out and why it just feels like a flap.

Sooner the better we move on from this signing, he's a walking disaster and going into another season with him would be throwing another one down the drain.

Can't for the life of me understand why he didn't attempt to save that crossed ball given the time he had to watch it come across.
At this stage I'm at a total loss with him, I love his confidence out on the ball but he's nowhere near good enough between the sticks. We need a change for next season.

Probably because 2 Villa players were an inch away from getting on the end of it which would have changed the direction of the ball. By the time the Villa players miss it, it's too late to react.
The problem with the goal was the ball landed in his 6 yard box so he can probably come out and punch the cross clear.
For me, on the ball he is the best keeper in the league. He is soo good on the ball...then off it, he is soo inconsistent. He literally just forgets to do some basics, like closing angles when closing down,not coming off his line...not claiming an obvious claim etc...and then in the next scenario he does all that without being prompted. His decision making off the ball is soo average and he needs to train day and night on that specific issue

At this rate we simply can't afford to concede any free-kicks in our defensive third as opponents will be fully aware that Onana hasn't got a clue what to do.

Don't see how people can blame him for that first goal. Those kinds of freekicks are almost impossible for a goalkeeper to deal with.
Someone put it aptly - it's almost like conceding a penalty when the opponent has a direct FK in our defensive third and there is an inswinging delivery.
An extra outfield player who occasionally makes saves.
When a GK concedes a soft goal like that first one (and does that kind of stuff pretty regularly), then it cannot be called as a "good game"! It's not like an attacker missing a simple chance. His mistakes are actively costing us points, luckily for him the team dug him out with the 3 goals.
And yet goalkeepers have been dealing with them for years. Or else it’d be a goal every time.
He had two choices. Gamble that Watkins would touch it and dive to his left in anticipation, or stay where he was and clutch it easily straight into his body. He chose option three, as he often does, sit down on his arse and spread his legs, letting the ball sail past him. If he’s going to gamble on Watkins touching it, he has to come forward to narrow the angle and maybe get a fist on it. Or he has to just stand his ground and claim it easily. What he did was amateur hour, being completely bamboozled and not making a choice. He does it all the time.
In terms of pure goalkeeping skills, forgetting how handy he is with his feet, he’s one of the worst keepers I’ve ever seen us have. Every time it goes near him I worry it’s a goal. He’s also an attention whore. He rolled one suicide pass out to Mainoo in the second half, about 7 yards, when he was surrounded by 3 Villa players. Meanwhile Dalot was free in oceans of space over to the left. Luckily Mainoo got it back to him, just, and Onana eventually cycled it out to the left anyway. But it served zero purpose, and was desperately close to a suicidal turnover.
I don’t understand why he does those things. He’s an absolute clown as far as I’m concerned. Everything I don’t look for in a goalkeeper.
He is simply not good enough. All of this "good on the ball" stuff is laughable. That is supplementary to making saves, not the other way around.

Nah...when you bring Onana you have to use his best attribute, his feet. Our players have to learn to take the ball in such pressure situations (Mancity's GK makes those passes btw)...Onana was going long every time a few matches ago and we were even more awful to watch. It was Onana trying to find hojlund almost every time and we were just too direct and terrible to watch.
You quoted his national team issues but it was the coach's fault there. you do not call Onana for the national team and then get him to start pumping balls...just call your second choice (which he eventually did). Don't call or buy a GK and then ask him to stop doing the stuff he is good at...we should be fixing his weaknesses like shot-stopping, getting off his line earlier to close angles, or more decisive high claims...not getting him to use his feet less.
Onana is top 2 in world football with the ball at his feet...I actually think most fans do not appreciate this aspect of his skill set more. He is really really good. No Two of his passes are the same (the opposition can't really learn his style) and the way he shapes his body to fake a pass is truly elite.
The Casemiro mishap is because he doesn't have the skills to be a first-phase player...Casemiro is too direct and you always need a calmer thinker next to him to get the best out of him. A first-phase midfielder has to be able to play safe passes with one touch, with the right pass selection and with the right weight on the pass...for example, Amrabat is a good first-phase midfielder. Even Pogba at manutd was not a good first-phase midfielder...he was doing too much...too flashy and he would lose the ball in critical areas. Bruno himself is also not a good first-phase midfielder. Mainoo, Eriksen and Amrabat are the ones in our team who I see can handle the ball in such situations

Villa did exactly what Galatasaray did from there and you will see more teams doing it. He needs to be strong and come and deal with that ball by either catching it or beating it away with his fists. A ball like that cannot be allowed to bounce in the 6 yard box.

He could do better, but he’s not the calamity keyboard warriors on here are making out, just an easy target.
He’s been criminally exposed, when he’s supposed to be adjusting to the PL, by a terrible defence (our 9th CB pairing last night?). He’s 4th in the PL saves table, which is way too high and illustrates his exposure, but we’re also joint fourth or fifth in least GA - shows he’s not the sieve some like to make out.
All this is exacerbated further by the fact that we’re barely scoring.
He has the mental strength that most of our team lack, watch his interview after the CL final, or him congratulating Rasmus last night - with a settled back 4 the uncertainty will disappear and he’ll become our anchor.
If you look at the bigger picture you’ll get a more balanced perspective.
