No offense but if you thought that performance of his was "special" you should pick another sport to watch because football isn't for you

I said his performance was "passable", if not special. Meaning, it was definitely not special as we cannot expect that from him.

I see how my English might have been confusing though.

I thought he solidified us in midfield, though we stayed super narrow and left ourselves open in wide areas after that, but his lack of composure on the ball this year has been absurd. He had a nice pass to Mata late on, but was terrible aside from that.

He did okay defensively when he came on. Some very good tackles when the team were starting to flag.. but dysfunctional in posession with his custom combination of erratic forward passing and cowardly side/back passing. Seems to me like he’s a bit odd.

Ah ok that makes sense

He looks like the midfield version of Smalling at the moment. The ball in his leg looks like a bomb.

Anyway, nice game defensively.

That tackle was an amazing one but on true Herrera fashion he then messed up a relatively easy clearance

Dont know what to feel for this guy, he’s been exceptional last year but way out of form this season, seems overly tensed when the ball is at his feet, those kamikazi tackles should stop too.

What I do like about him are those through balls every now and then, wish it happens more often...

Last season he was consistently one of our best performers. What has happened since then?

Well, at the beginning of the season he couldn't get in the side. Matic was ahead of him - hell he wasn't even getting game time from the bench.

All I can think is that either he has been hurt by falling down the pecking order or he feels he needs to push himself to get back into contention. Either way it's likely to affect his performance. It's hard not to take this stuff on the field with you. Where's Eileen Drewry when you need her?

He started very well against Bournemouth on the right of the midfield 3. He linked up beautifully with Mata and Valencia in the lead up to Rashford hitting the bar. It was probably the best attacking move United put together all game. Then (oddly), he was moved to the left of the 3 and didn't influence the game offensively again until the pass that put Mata clear for Lukaku's blocked shot.

It is obvious that he links up very well with Mata and they have a great understanding but Jose really doesn't like playing them together and regularly replaces one with the other.

I really can't understand what's happened to him. His passes are so poor at the moment. He gives the ball away nearly every time he attempts a forward pass

I can't remember to have seen such a dip in quality in a single United player.

Sure Rooney, but that is about age and mileage on the clock. That is not an excuse Herrera can use.

He's not a creative player and never showed his best form there. His best form has always come at the base of a midfield 3 as the defensive mid. He's never going to be able to replace Pogba's role, and never looked good in that role.

Quite the opposite. He used to play as a #10 for Bilbao. Also as box-to-box. Never used to play at the base of the midfield.

Regardless, it's not a positional thing. You don't suddenly lose the ability to pass when you move 10m forward or 10m back. He was top assist man last season and he was quite good and spotting free players and finding them with passes. The "he never could pass" thing is a revisionism based on the current performances. Doesn't get reflected at all in the last 6-7 years of his career.

His best form at United has always come at the base of midfield though is what I'm saying. Of course I'm not saying his passing hasn't been worse this season, but he's always been prone to the random hoofs. Maybe it's a confidence thing for him, or he loses composure once he loses his spot in the team and rushes everything, who knows. Obviously capable of a lot more then this, but I do think that he's at his best when given the ball winning midfielder role and not the creative mid.

Gotten used to his mediocre performances. Not even complaining, just grin and bear it till Pogba gets back. Luckily, we have avoided dropping too many points despite him playing during this stretch of games.

Herrera doesn't even attempt to pass the ball forward. Just gives it to Matic. Inexcusable for a midfielder. I don't care whether your a DM or a box to box midfielder you need to do much more and it's clear there is no point of him starting for United anymore. He was good in a DM role but perhaps we overated him too much. We finished 6th last year with Herrera as our DM. Now we have a real specialist DM we are in second. It's not a coincidence.

Looks shockingly poor this year.

No one can take away his performances last season, but he certainly looks a shadow of himself when he isn’t doing Pogba’s dirty work.

But at this moment in time the only alternative is McTominay, so he’s in the team. Loaning out Pereira looks worse and worse as the season goes on, regardless of who wanted the loan move.

Don't want us renewing his contract.
We need an upgrade on him and many players.
Tired of mediocrity.

One of my favourite players, but nowhere near good enough anymore. Should use him only when needed to rest others, I have no idea what happened to hik.

Does nothing. He's been lucky with the injuries and suspensions to our midfield. At this point I 100% rather have McTominay in the centre.

Thought he was good today, apart from last 15 minutes but that applies to almost anyone today.

Seems to be learning to play with Matic. He does all the running covering space and frees up Matic a little more to play forward passes.

I bet if he was playing for our rival I would have just called him different names. He is so irritating to watch and the way he rolls over is not fun to see even if that helps us. Only if he had some footballing skills to match his drama skills but this season he has been horrible to watch and to add his dramatic performances, he looks even more idiotic

This. Hes had some splendid defense splitting passes over the years and his short passing game has always been his forte. Which just makes his current performances even more bizarre.

He's channeling his inner Schneiderlin. He's close to being worse than playing with 10 men.

Can't wait to replace him, he's nowhere near good enough.

Yeah, we most definitely need two CM's.

Herrera is done, Fellaini won't renew and Carrick as probably past it.
