If the players are coming under scrutiny for coming 6th then shouldn't the manager come under the same scrutiny. He won us two trophies so escapes judgement. However the players also won us two trophies yet get hammered.
Yes, he should.

I know he is being scrutinised, but the fact we won trophies is what is being given for his job being safe, yet the players are not given the same security. If they are getting blamed for us being 6th, so should he. If he gets praise for winning trophies, so should they.

You just said he's "escaping judgement" and complained he isn't being scrutinised. Make your mind up.

In most cases players get longer than managers so I don't get your point.

My point regards finishing 6th (admittedly slightly tongue in cheek), was that there’s no point dwelling on who was the best last season if all we could end up was 6th. He was good, not great. He didn’t carry the team to win huge things.

Obviously I get DDG, Pogba, Zlatan etc finished 6th too, but it wasn’t their best, and they’re kicking on....it seemed it was Herrera’s peak.

Simple speaking, would the likes of Barca, RMad, Bayern, City etc be clamouring for him for their starting XI? I think not....

Admittedly, he is having a poor season so far, but there is no way I would want to lose Herrera.

He showed us last year that he has what it takes to be a United player and that he loves the club.

I don't understand why some people are so quick to want to sell players who are simply experiencing bad form. Unless these people also think Herrera wasn't performing well for us last season?

Herrera has never kicked up a fuss when he doesn't play, and I doubt we're going to get many better players than him who have the ability to perform well in the first team, yet not kick up a stink when they are benched. We need to build a strong squad of players and I certainly think Herrera should be a part of that squad.

Is his extension triggered?

United 'trigger Herrera's contract extension'
According to the Mail, the extension has been triggered on Herrer’a contract keeping him at OLd Trafford until summer 2019.

Mourinho did confirm United would be doing it - the same with Juan Mata - but no official announcement from the club yet.

This would always happen anyway. Although it has been rumoured for ages. Could not see the club leaving themselves in a position again where they could lose somebody for nothing.

am a bit confused as to why we're letting so many first team players run down their contracts - even if it has an option to extend. In one sense it puts a lot of power in the players hands, where they can ask for way more money than they're worth or they'll leave on a free. But also it makes a player feel like the club actually don't want the player otherwise they'd have offered new terms with 2 years to go etc, not with 6 months to go and an option for a further year.

Perhaps over thinking this if you look at how often american sports players leave on a free / messi has 6 months to go etc but I'd be gutted if we let this happen to Pogba / Rashford etc after we're building a team around them

They are not exactly first team players though are they ? And you can't exactly offer every player a new contract when they have 2 years to go on their contract. For the likes of De Gea, Pogba, sure, it makes sense. But for others it makes more sense to see how they are performing, what the managers plans for them are etc.

Well he isn't in a starting XI?
I'm sick and tired of those what would Barca, Madrid and Bayern do (oh and City is there too all of a sudden somehow) or who would they have.
Herrera is more than good enough to be a squad option but unfortunately he's not a flavor of the month here anymore.
Pogba and Zlatan and DDG are kicking on? They had bad games too last year.

Basel 1:0 Man Utd
I reckon about 80% of his passes must be backwards. And at least half of them to the person that passed half a second earlier.

Hes a van gaal style passer but he still puts in a shift

has a good run around in front of the defenders.

It's hard to figure out what he actually offers. Passes back constantly, every second tackle is a foul and gets walked around by average players. Should be playing for Eibar.

He really can't play as an 8 especially against teams that sit deep and crowd the midfield. Lacks the technical ability to distribute or break the press. Should only play as a defensive midfielder.

Very good first half, intercepted their balls pretty well and did the defensive work very fine.

Absolute shite second half, turned to being headless chicken again, spreading useless tackles everywhere that the opponents got around and left him in the dust.

I'm so disappointed by him this season. Love the guy but he's a shadow of the player he was last season.

So frustrating to watch but not the worst player we've had, tonight Lingaard stunk that place than anyone else

Another poor performance

If he is not spoiling someone else on oppositions contribution he is not really doing anything at the moment

I’m not sure it’s that. I think that our team is improving around him and showing him up for the mid-table scrappy bits and bobs player he really is.

Take the money in the Summer because he isn’t worthless and we can reinvest it

There was a point in the first half when Smalling played the ball to him and he had acres of space behind him to turn, but instead he took 3 touches, moving towards Smalling, turned left and passed it to Darmain. Boiled my, piss that moment.

Very poor tonight, he doesn't offer enough on the ball these days.
His first reaction in receiving a ball is to give a pass that contributes nothing to the game. A small side pass, or a back pass to a defender and there is no one around him. It is like he has something against turning and looking for a forward pass if he is not already looking forward. The worse part is when he is going forward but instead of looking to pass forward, he turns around and pass it to Smalling who then passes it to keeper.

The one at the end annoyed me the most. He got a pass and instead of turning around and putting it forward, he passed it back to the defender even though time was running out.

Was good in the first half. Had his work cut out in the second because we were not defending properly as a unit.

Problem is he was never great to begin with, good in some matches, poor in others. Very inconsistent, now he looks consistently bad.

Good first half poor in the second like most of the team. I feel Mourinho has turned him too defensive. He just don't make many good runs anymore or link up the way he did under LVG when he often played.

It is amazing how quickly you guys turned on Herrera.

Think a lot of posters (myself included) are somewhat disappointed, maybe a little angry, at how much he has regressed this season.

Was never a top player but he’s turned into the new Cleverly, a coward who always fobs the ball off to someone else nearby to do the hard work. His tackling has gone to pot as well.

Loved the guy last year but I’m losing/lost patience with him, may seem a bit unfair but I’ve got no time for sentiment anymore.

This team is suffering with way too many average players for us to be able to carry him and his “passion”.
