Alderweireld or Maguire

Not that I want Toby to leave Spurs and still hope Levy will offer him the money he wants I must point out Toby does not have injury issues.

He was injured in the game against Real Madrid last season in November, it was at this stage he was offered a new contract and had verbally agreed to it. His injury was a Hamstring injury that took about 7 weeks to recover from, in this time vVD signed for 'Pool and was put on £170k a week, its believed Toby was offered a new contract of between £130k-£140k. as vVD ( a lesser player) his agent (dad) decided Toby should be on at least that. Levy being Levy said well you agreed to the new contract but they refused to sign so Levy told Poch he wasn't to play unless other injuries/suspensions meant he had to. He next featured in FA Cup replay early Feb because Poch wanted to rest players after we had just played you and 'Pool and before we played Goons and Juve inside 4 days of each other. He was then dropped and and next featured in FA Cup against Rochdale (Mid Feb) as both Sanchez and Vertonghen were rested then he was played against Brighton in PL in April as Sanchez was outwith a knock, he then played the last 3 games on request from Belgium manager so he was match fit for WC.

So no injury issues just dropped due to going back on his word.

As I said I would rather Levy can agree a deal and we keep the best defender in the PL.

But if you want him Levy will want either c£70m or a deal involving Martial.

I think this will go to the wire with a deal involving Martial as I am sure he will put pressure on your manager to leave to get get game time as he must be unhappy to see his country win the WC and he not even being in the squad due to lack of game time with United.

I still think our Problem area is our full backs and would rather sign 2 proper full backs than a CB atm. Full backs and a Winger would be my choices, firstly.

Maguire was excellent for Hull and excellent for Leicester. He has had two seasons in the PL and done brilliantly - enough to get him cemented as a starter in the England team, where he went on to have a very good World Cup.
He is younger, English, good on the ball and a great aerial presence at both ends of the pitch.

Our defence is shite. We had the 2nd best defensive record because the world's best keeper had his best season.

Exactly. De gea’s quality seems to mask the lack of quality of our centre backs for some strange reason. A top drawer centre half is a more important need than RW OR LB for me . Smalling and Jones are both at the club over 7 years . How jones has lasted that long is beyond me he is absolutely brutal IMO . Never looks comfortable on the ball . Every time I watch him play he is scrambling for the ball . So bad

The bitterness is real, you Scottish or something? You can only beat what’s put in front of you, England made the most of a lucky draw and got to the semi finals. If they don’t better the performance in the next 20 years then yes it will still be getting spoken of and rightly so.

The nonsense about Kane’s hat-trick or “Even feckin Lingard” scoring against Panama, if it was that easy why didn’t Lukaku get a hat trick or Hazard score against them? England played bloody well in that first half against them and were great to watch. No idea why that is so hard for people to admit.

I'm not really bitter. I posted that after I got in from the pub last night and I think I was trying to be funny. Swing and miss

So it's not a fact Chris Smalling constantly pulls at people's jerseys at set pieces and VAR would eat him alive?

OK then...

How many penalties did he conceded in the games VAR was used?

Alderweireld is not coming to OT. He has a dodgy injury record for 3 or the past 4 years. Mou only wants fit players.

Season .. Injury ......... Lost: days ... matches
17/18 ... Hamstring ............ 129 ..... 29
16/17.....Knee ..................... 45 ....... 9
14/15.....Hamstring, thigh ..... 56 ..... 10

There's obviously a clear interest to bring in a CB this window - there's been strong links to both with the most recent report stating we're considering a £65mil bid for Maguire. So my question is, if we are to bring in one of these CBs which would be your preference?

Mine would be Alderweireld as he's more experienced and his team have always had a very strong defensive record when he's been apart of it.

Maguire

He's had one major injury in his career - what's dodgy about that?

I think we'll put faith in Lindelof and get Alderweireld next summer for 25m.

I don't see the big difference between Maguire and Jones, so I'm not much for buying except he'd be less injury-prone. Save the money and spent big on a key player instead.

Every player reaches his "max-level" if played consistently. Smalling this year is a good example of this. I'd like us to have a british core again though (That shit is expensive these days).

Well, it wasn't used in any game played in but, if you actually read what I wrote, you'd see that I said, "would eat him alive"
This means that if VAR were to be used in matches he played in, he'd be conceding penalty after penalty at set pieces.
The use of the word "would" suggests that is what I meant

Hope this clears things up for you

IIRC he played against Huddersfield, Spurs, Chelsea in FA cup games where VAR was used and he didn't give away any penalties. Also in all 3 games he committed 2 fouls.

Edit: In these 3 games, we conceded 19 corners, Smalling didn't give away single penalty. Not sure how can you justify your opinion as facts.

Ah OK, fair enough.

3 games where he didn't get caught is worth the risk

Only in 3 games VAR was used, we conceded 19 penalties and we didn't concede a goal or penalty from those corners. Smalling also committed grand total of 2 fouls.

So from "VAR will kill Smalling" to "Smalling didn't play in any games where VAR was used" to "yeah only 3 games".

Look at the way it was used at the World Cup. Are you telling me it wouldn't in any way bother him the way he acts at set pieces?

If he went to that World Cup, England would have come home a lot earlier

Alderweireld will improve the quality of our football from the back. He is really good on the ball, technically solid for a defender, passes well and likes to go forward. His experience and leaderahip will also help our other CBs and back line.

What I love about this narrative is that it a) completely ignores the fact attackers also very prone to pulling the shirts of defenders and b) defenders will adapt and hold less. It was clear there was less holding from QF onwards when players become aware of the frequency of penalties awarded.

Maguire, but I'd rather we sell 2 or 3 of our current defenders first before they all start overflowing out of the dressing room.

We had the 2nd best defence in the league last season, CB isn't a problem that's crying out for attention.

The team needs goals, that's where the money should be spent

I think our CB positions need urgent attention. First of all, keeping the ball from entering your net is now just half the role of the modern day defence. Nowadays, the quality of your football and attack is dictated to a large extent by the quality of football played by your defence. The best teams have CBs and full backs that are comfortable on the ball and can move it confidently to the midfield and attack. So, even though we conceded fewer goals than most last season, our defence was pretty average in moving the ball well out of defence into attack.
Moreover, one has to wonder what would have happened to us if we did not have the best goalkeeper in the world in our team.
We also have to look at certain realities:
- Jones is injury prone
- and most unexpectedly, Bailly has also become injury prone.

From facts to assumptions. Until he concedes a penalty because of his defending, whatever you said is just assumptions. Every defender and attacker holds shirts, making it sound as if Smalling is the only one who did is silly.

Exactly. If every shirt pull is a penalty then we will win shit loads of penalties because of Smalling.

I don't care what anyone else does, I care about us and he's the biggest offender for it at the club and it will eventually cost us!

Somehow till date he hasn't conceded a penalty defending set pieces and this is his 8th or 9th season.
