There's obviously a clear interest to bring in a CB this window - there's been strong links to both with the most recent report stating we're considering a £65mil bid for Maguire. So my question is, if we are to bring in one of these CBs which would be your preference?

Mine would be Alderweireld as he's more experienced and his team have always had a very strong defensive record when he's been apart of it.

I don't think there's a clear interest for a CB at all. I think it's just the media making up stuff. I think neither of them is gonna happen, and I'm not particularly fussed for getting either of them tbh.

Alderweireld by far. Maguire is your typical English hype product.

Big fan of both but Alderweireld is the best defender in the league I think.

Don't think we'll get either, but i'd probably go for the younger, better in the air, less injury prone Maguire to be honest. See if he can step up another level like he's been doing the last few years.

Maguire really impressed me in the World Cup. One of the stand out players actually. I was a fan of his last season; seems a really good player. Saying that, i would still probably go for Alderweireld. He would be a massive upgrade on Smalling and Jones. Although that's not saying much tbf.

Neither would be ideal but if I had to choose one then Maguire. Alderweireld is injury prone and will get slower.

Neither. Alderweireld is priced out and McGuire wouldn't really make much of a difference from what we have now.

Keep current cbs. Add LB, RB and RW then if smalling/Jones/Rojo mess up we will replace them with toby next year for 25m

We had the 2nd best defence in the league last season, CB isn't a problem that's crying out for attention.

The team needs goals, that's where the money should be spent

Had we not purchased Lindelof last season, I would have said Maguire. However, seeing as we have a ball playing defender in Lindelof, who isn't the finished article, but has potential to be a top centre back, then it has to be Alderweireld, as Lindelof could learn a lot from him.

Our defence is shite. We had the 2nd best defensive record because the world's best keeper had his best season.

Toby. Not convinced by Maguire in the slightest.

We have a phenomenal goalkeeper and a manager that takes a safety first approach. I absolutely agree that it's not top priority, but it definitely needs attention. That's surely pretty clear based on how many games Chris Smalling plays.

Yeah, that's not really true. De Gea did great, but no matter how good a keeper is if the defence isn't playing well he'll be exposed and concede.

I'd accept there is a case to be made that Matic in midfield contributes to our defensive solidity, I'd also accept that our full backs don't offer enough going forward and upgrades are required on both flanks.

However the facts don't lie, our central defence had a good season last year and there is no urgent need for an upgrade.

We let in one goal more than Man City, but scored 38 fewer. Resources are limited. What problem is more important to fix ?

Spending 50m+ on a central defender shouldn't even be a discussion.

Aldeweireld would be more ideal. If we were to let go say Jones and Smalling, then Maguire would be a good addition but not at the quoted price.

The same keeper who will be with us next year as well. CB is not a big priority as we've already bought there for the past two seasons.

Not sure Mourinho is thinking about the defensive aspect here. We've been linked with ball playing centre backs, which suggests Jose isn't happy with the distribution from our current centre backs.

He has spoken about the lack of confidence quite a few times, in regards to playing from the back. After the City game, he said,

'I need my defenders to be a little more confident. With just a little bit of pressure by City they were kicking the ball, they were nervous, they were not bringing the ball with quality to my midfielders, so I needed improvement in terms of the confidence of the , also to bring the line up, so we could press a little bit'.

Centre backs like Maguire, Alderweireld, Bonucci - all of whom we've been linked with, would certainly improve our distribution and composure.

The defensive overperformed and the attack underperformed. Our conservative style of play was due to not having complete trust in our defenders I feel. We need a real quality centre-back to get the best out of the attack.

Maguire.

Better age.
Comfortable as the left CB while most of our current options, and Alderweireld, have a strong preference for the right CB position.
Dealing with Leicester will be 10x easier than dealing with Levy.

Alderweireld, he's a player I was so wrong about. His performance levels from being an Atletico Madrid reject to reshaping his career in the Premier League has been incredible.

Alderweireld for me.

But I think a poll should be added to quantify the views on this forum.
