Alderweireld or Maguire

Don't like Maguire at all and can't see how he is supposed to become a truly great CB. I may sound like a tit after a few years, but that's football.
So Toby, not even a question (even though I don't think that he's the best in the league either)

Maguire's had 7 full seasons as a pro and been named player of the year on 5 occasions. The 2 seasons he wasn't were low appearance seasons.

I would personally prefer Toby but Maguire had an impressive WC and is younger but I would prefer Skriniar over both

Wouldn’t exactly say no to either of them but I’m in the “don’t need a centre half” camp.

Chris "pulling at every jersey, from every set piece" Smalling
Phil "what's that round thing" Jones

Yeah, I'm firmly in the whole, "get me defenders ASAP!" camp. There is a reason why we're cautious in our approach

For every penalty England got thanks to VAR, Smalling would have evened that up

Please can people highlight what exactly they see in Chris Smalling ? He is evidently rated very highly on this forum. I see a player with atrocious defensive positioning, a tendancy for mistakes in big games and an on the ball ability you would expect from a goalkeeper.

I must have missed the part where I said I’d play them both?

The current version of Alderweireld is not the same Alderweireld of a few years ago. In 2015/16 and 16/17 he was the best CB in the PL. Although he's back from the injury I'd be worried paying over 60 million for a potentially injury prone player and someone who can decline at any moment.

Maguire at least has age on his side and has a bigger scope for improvement.

We should wait until January and snap Alderweireld up on the relatively cheap.

Alderweilder every day and twice on Sunday. I understand England based united fans prefer Maguire due to him being English; but being objective as a foreign fan, Toby is a better player, more experienced, and more of a leader.

Although if we can trade Jones and Smalling for Maguire, I’ll be on board of singing him. No more crocks please!

If we must sign a centre-back, Bonucci.

Both, but would rather pay the 50m for Maguire now then for Alderweireld this season when we can get him on a free the following season. Also would be nice to see Levy's greed go punished

Maguire because he’s younger. But if one is much cheaper than the other, then I’d pick the cheaper option.

Absolutely Maguire between the two. Although i'd prefer Stones if available.

Maguire is English. Yuck. He's a better player than Alderweireld but let's be anti-British about it!

Alderweireld.

England's group and subsequent world cup run was piss easy and the media love-in was unbearably throughout, not just for Maguire whose best skill was heading balls in the opposition box but also Harry Kane who ended up as top scorer, like what the feck he scored a hattrick against Panama. Even feckin Lingard scored a worldie in that game. I'll be seeing documentaries about this shit on ITV in 20 years time knowing the truth. People won't listen. I'll be mad.

Could you actually not bear it?

Your anti-Englishness is more unbearablable.

The English at least had a sense of humour. You don't.

Go have a lie down. You might feel better.

I'd prefer Maguire but both would improve our squad in my opinion. With that said, i would take the 60 million and buy Sandro or invest in a different position.

I don't see CB as our most pressing concern. Right attack and fullbacks are more important right now.

Maguire, mainly cos hes younger and better in the air. Toby is without doubt a better player but I don't like his recent struggles with injury. Getting him would be more of a gamble.

Maguire is overrated cos he's English. He's a big moaning lump who will get found out.

Alderweireld is far superior although has injury issues.

Go any pay 80 mil for Varane and be done with it.

Player of the year where though? At hull? Do me a favour

The cafe didn’t rate Carrick when we were linked to him and he turned out brilliant.

The cafe didn’t rate Matic when we were linked with him but he turned out brilliant.

The cafe doesn’t rate Maguire, so my vote is with Maguire.

Neither. I'm not fussed about a centre back signing unless it's someone genuinely worth building a defence around. We've got enough good defenders. Alderwerald is good but would be too expensive for his age. McGuire would be too expensive for mostly potential.

If we're spending big on a CB it should be a 23-25 year old Varane/Umtiti type defender.

Neither. If we have to pick one then it's Toby.

If Spurs are sticking to their asking price then we should agree a deal with him so that he can leave for 25 million next season.

Sheffield United, Hull, Leicester. He's had 5 full seasons and got the POTY in each of those seasons while also making the jump to the national team
