Not sure LvG will risk De Gea for his first game against one of their direct rivals. In a game where even a draw will be a loss. He'll have to go with his match sharp (i.e. had a few games recently) players.

For those picking Henderson, he has not trained so will not be playing. Unfortunately Lovren didn't pick up any injuries internationally. :(

Why is the Liverpool thread locked in the Football Forum? If a mod could please take a look. I was going to update that Sturridge is in full training with the first team after his hip root cause treatment in the USA for the last few months. Won't play on Saturday but just letting everyone know. :D

There is no risk involved imo, he played for Spain midweek and hasn't missed any training, he'll be fine and is a far better bet than Romero.

I don't think you guys will get that many chances anyway, but DDG's pinpoint distribution could come in very handy.

Oh and my lineup for Sat (not one I want because it has Lovren in):

    Mig,
    Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Gomez
    -----Lucas
    Milner-----Can
    ----Firmino
    Ings Benteteteteke

Edit: for a full explanation why:
Our fullbacks are unlikely to join the attack. Gomez did against West Ham and it left Lovren woefully exposed. Keep Gomez back and invite Darmian forward to join Mata. Which we know LvG doesn't like to do. No Darmian then Mata has to do it on his own while Gomez ensures Mata has no free shots at open goals which Moreno kindly obliged last season.

Clyne will be busier as Shaw does like to get forward (did it well with England). Ings will make the most of the space he leaves while Benteke is dry humping Blind. Memphis ain't great at covering back as we've seen. Ings will basically do the Ayew role in a diamond which Swansea played so well. Milner and Can are basically just covering defensively while Utd reach 70% possession.

To be honest, I entirely forgot about Firmino. Swap him for Ings in my team, and we're good to go.

Absolutely no way we start without Hendo on the pitch, so Can can forget it.

Surprisingly confident about this, cant see us winning 3-1, Rooney,Memphis,Mata

I also see Romero conceding a stupid goal and a few nervy moments resulting in him being dropped for the rest of the season for De Gea to return next match and normality resumes so really I wish we could just cut the middle bit out and stick De Gea straight back in but we all know LVG loves to be super stubborn and do it the most frustratingly painful way possible for us fans.

Surprised so many have us scoring 2-3 goals considering our form

Can't be any riskier than playing Romero. He was supposedly fully focused against Swansea and look what happened!

I hope we play Dave and the fans show him plenty of support. It should encourage him to put pen to paper.

Will be half way to Mexico while this is on :( confident of a win, they have a lot of their bigger names out. 3-0 I'm off for!

Hope we start aggressive, direct and fast.
They're the 3 things we've looked incapable of all season. As much as I agree with you I just don't see our style changing that much for this one.

    Hope too see :
    -------------DDG----------------
    Darmian--Smalling--Blind--Shaw
    ------------Morgan--------------
    --------Bastian--Herrera--------
    Mata--------------------Memphis
    ------------Rooney--------------

What will dropping Romero for DDG do to the process we claim to use? Rewarding form & loyalty?

Unless he signs a contract and performs brilliantly at training, I'd rather Romero, despite DDG being a better player, it says players above the philosophy, as silly as some of his rules are, he must now stick to them.

I want De Gea to play because he is a better player, but mostly because if he plays this match before signing a new contract its as good as done imo. Van Gaal would not play him if not.

I agree. At least I certainly hope you're right. No contract no play. Simples. The caveat being that if negotiations are progressing them maybe thats an acceptable compromise

that last game though against a powerful, fast attacker... he struggled badly - I'd worry about him vrs Benteke who normally does well against us

watch a clip of that second goal last week and how easily Gomis escaped him.....he did it a number of times

the only thing that diverted attention from how bad Blind defended in that instance for the 2nd goal was Romero's goalkeeping

It was Smalling and Darmian marking Gomis. Blind went across to cover Shaw's position.

Hendo hasn't trained. He won't play any part.

Apparently, if the rumours are true my team above is exactly what we're playing tomorrow.

Has firmino been good for you guys? Genuine question as I haven't watched any PL games other than United's

A player who has been here for a grand total of 2 months is more loyal than a player who has been with us for over 4 years? Let us not even talk about form or do you want me to remind you of the gaffe by Romero against Swansea?

I'm not that confident even though Coutinho's out. Think it'll be a cagey draw with both teams patchy form and lack of goals. 1-1.

    Anyway, team I'd go for;

    de Gea
    Darmian - Smalling - Blind - Shaw
    Schneiderlin - Schweinsteiger
    Mata - Herrera - Memphis
    Rooney (c)

Subs: Romero, Rojo, Valencia, Pereira, Young, Fellaini, Martial

Early prediction before any clues from the presser:

    Romero
    Darmian - Smalling - Blind - Shaw
    Schneiderlin - Schweinsteiger
    Mata - Fellaini - Depay
    Rooney
I can see Van Gaal looking to use Fellaini to get about and break up their defence and allow Mata and Depay to work around him.

Man Utd twitter saying 3pm now
    Is it?
I saw 4 PM on MUTV schedule.
Just saw manutd.com official. Its says updates from 3PM. Not sure if thats the time press conference starts.

    Maybe someone could re-confirm

Meh, this should be 3 points, Coutinho is 75% of their creativity + they have Lovren

Romero is not good enough, de gea is world class. It really is that simple, can't afford to be wasting points now.

    That's not the point.

You have a rule in place, players can't be above that rule, or the rule won't be respected.

You could argue that Romero's form hasn't been brilliant, but the last game David played for us wasn't either, I haven't seen his international performance recently, so couldn't comment there, but Romero has done well with the chance he's been given.
