Welbeck's 1st goal for United*, 100th against us. Somethings are inevitable.

    *cracker it was too.

This system clearly relies on the two wide players to be creative and reliable in possession. Not happening so far.

So I'll preface this by saying I think Rashford is playing better than last season, however....

It's clear he is the weak link in the press. He has no energy in the press, seems like he never really knows where he has to be. Additionally he is just awful at the build up/interplay. I'd put Garnacho on for him.

Amad has kept the ball well but his decision making has been bad this half. I still think he needs a run to truly see if he can acclimatise to the league.

Maguire will be out the team soon. He could have cleared that ball and him mouthing that he couldn't is indicative of him as a player.

Its also clear Casemiro is just not auited to these tight games, he doesn't have the ball playing skills to hang.

Mounts press is very good but he is extremely light weight.

I'd go Zirkzee for Mount, Garnacho for Rashford and De Ligt for Maguire.

We've looked solid enough out of possession but our approach play in the final third is quite slow and lacking craft. Amad has had a difficult half.

I hate that we play without a real striker. We rarely become dangerous enough.

Furthermore, it is alarming that we are not playing better against a weak Brighton team. They have created nothing apart from the chance they scored on, where Maguire was watching football rather than reacting and acting.

We should be good enough to play Brighton off the pitch when they have been no better than they were today.

And Mount offers nothing - I still do not understand why we spent anything on getting him to the club.

Even game, which is already a positive considering the past. Pressing well and managing to get the ball into their half. But one team knows what to do in the final third and the other is clueless.

Poor defending by Maguire. Rashford and Diallo utterly awful.

We are better structurally than last season, that’s for sure. I also think we’re a bit better at building from the back under the press.

We’re still hideous at creating chances and we’ve massively nosedived under ten Hag at being able to be devastating on counter attacks. That 3v2 we had earlier this game was an Oleball bread and butter golaso.

Wouldn’t say outplayed. What game you watching they had half a chance and scored
They're controlling the game and certainly the middle of pitch. They might be shite in front of goal but they've scored and they're preventing us from playing. Outplayed.

Amad is the latest RedCafe darling to become a great player simply by not playing, and therefore not being tarred with the same brush as the others.

He's been really poor today and I can't understand what he's done to justify starting over Garnacho.

Other than that, I think there are actually plenty of positives to take from this performance.

We have defended really well and have been caught-out by an individual error from Maguire, who will be 4th choice when our CBs are all fit.

We still lack goals...you won't get enough from Rashford and Amad...but we know this is a work-in-progress and we've been the better side here and looked largely in control
100% . Have said we need a top winger all summer. Obviously the likes of Antony and Sancho are clogging the squad though in terms of recruitment.

That's what you get with Harry Maguire every time.

How does Maguire not deal with that

Maguire should have just cleared that

Here we go! Starting Maguire directly related to conceding this goal

    Feck off, Erik.

A year ago our manager was happy to see Maguire leave and Maguire decided to stay as back-up because we refused to pay him millions to leave.

A year later we've spent £90m on new centre backs and we're rewarding Harry Maguire for refusing to leave by starting him ahead of our signings. Why? Because he didn't make any howlers against Fulham and it would be mean to drop him after a good game.

It's actually baffling management and loads of posters on here were begging he stay in the team too because apparently you have to wait for him to make a howler before you drop him.

Attack pretty rubbish. One great chance and that came from a long ball from Onana, Dalot winning a header and then making an incredible cross.

Mount is doing great in terms of his pressing but there is clear lack of a reference point for the others up front, Zirkzee coming on should be the move but like last week it might open up the midfield a bit more for Brighton.

Much better shape defensively, soft goal with no-one covering themselves in glory aside. Encouraging because if the right balance can be found up front it could be a decent set up for the season.

Agree. Zirkzee up front, garnacho for amad should be the h/t subs.

The CB pairing do not complement one another at all.

We need a central focal point.

Other than that it’s been better than this thread suggests.

On the whole pretty decent and really unlucky to have given away that goal. Not sure what you make of it if you're Ten Hag. You can bring Zirkzee on but the press is working well and who knows what will happen when Mount goes off. You could bring on De Ligt for Maguire but how much will it really help get a goal?

The obvious one is Amad off and Garnacho on.

And so, for the 2nd game in a row, the obvious changes are Garnacho and Zirkzee on. With Ten Hag as coach we are winning zip.
Still a long way off this happening but if we lose this and then against Liverpool, I think he’s going to be under serious pressure

The lack of discipline with the ball is seriously bad.

    We need a striker badly

As for Amad, he better get used to sitting on the bench, everyone begged for his chance and this what he's serving up?

We’re better than we were last season but there are still glaring problems that need to be fixed.
    Better? How, exactly?

We barely nicked a win at home vs Fulham, we don't create shit, and now we're losing against an awfully average Brighton team.

That's because we have completed stifled them with our set-up and press from the front.

I can take losing games like this because it shows promise for what might be achieved when we have our best XI out and they have had a bit more time to get familiar with one another.

I'd almost rather see us lose games but play well than win games but play appallingly, because what we need now is signs of tactical development and structure
I agree we’ve stifled them. But we need to see more when we have the ball. We’re too pedestrian and are definitely not playing well in that sense. Good off the ball for the most part but really average with it.

Maguire, Amad and Rashford should all be hooked at half time but at least one of them won’t be.

Dalot, Casemiro and Mainoo have been good. They’ve done more defending in our box than either centre back.

Mount has played well, but everything he’s good at - Bruno is better. He’s an excellent backup but playing them together leaves us toothless. It might work if we had more intelligent wide attackers but not like this.

Amad has been very poor. Had one good cross for Rashford who was offside anyways and that was about it. Rashford equally terrible on the other side.

Maguire was pathetic for that goal. Just let's the ball go past him doing feck all.

We are doing okay. If we get a goal back I'd back us to go on and win. Brighton have created feck all.
And then is too worried about the cutback rather than the cross across the face of the goal, even though you always cover the latter as you still have time to charge a cutback down.

Honestly, it was schoolboy stuff from Maguire there.

Played some decent passages football but no cutting edge. Poor defending from maguire on the goal. Wingers not causing enough problems. Eth has to start instilling some urgency. Last 5 minutes before half time united players walking around. Make a tackle put them under pressure work harder. Frustrating.

The numbers will say we’ve been the better team but that is a bit deceptive.

For one they are playing very differently under this manager. Unlike the previous two who were possession obsessed, based on their last two games they seem to be a bit more direct, which isn’t exactly the strength of their squad and they might have some growing pains as they adjust. Their lack of possession a testament of that directness.

Secondly, most of our possession has happened just past the halfway line, which appears to be the furthest our strikers are starting from. While this allows Bruno and Mount to see more of the ball, our wingers (who have largely been poor) have been deprived of 1v1 opportunities against their fullbacks without their wingers covering. This has further stifled us up the pitch as we cannot advance with any consistency into their final third.

In terms of us being a bit more comfortable, yes, we’ve managed to do that, ultimately we have remained toothless. Still not sure if playing in this sort of deeper offensive block is ETH’s response to last season.

    Garnacho for Amad.

As bad as Rashford is, he is more likely to do something.

Zirkzee on for Mount even though he has been good this half, but we need a striker.
