All three games had Spain with 64% possession or more and had the opposition chasing after them non-stop as always so I think it's a reasonable comparison to be honest. I'm not saying Moutinho is better defensively than Cabaye, I'm not sure he is, but I don't get the comparisons to Kagawa. He looked combative to me. It's not like that game was an anomaly anyway. Only three players made more interceptions in the Euro's and they were all centre backs. Moutinho gets around the pitch for sure. I actually think this side of his game's being overlooked simply because he's been known as a playmaker since his teens.

Why do you think teams haven't bought him due to his size? It didn't put Spurs or Madrid off spending big on Modric and it seemed like Spurs would have happily bought him last summer if he was available at an affordable price. I do think Sir Alex would go for Cabaye over Moutinho because he's the safer option but I don't think that would be because of size or defensive contribution. We just like PL-proven midfielders.

Neil Webb (Nottingham Forest, 1989)
Paul Ince (West Ham, 1989)

Roy Keane (Nottingham Forest, 1993)

Verón (Lazio, 2001)
Djemba-Djemba (Nantes, 2003)
Kléberson (Atlético Paranaense, 2003)
Miller (Celtic, 2004)
Carrick (Tottenham, 2006)
Hargreaves (Bayern, 2007)
Anderson (Porto, 2007)

Powell (Crewe, 2012)

That's pretty much every first-team midfielder we've signed under Sir Alex. Then there's the likes of Milne, Phelan and Choccy who he converted into midfielders - all from British teams. It goes without saying that Sir Alex feels safer going for British midfielders.
Amazing how few midfielders we've bought

Even with homegrown talent like Butt, Scholes, Fletcher and Giggs it's strange to see how few he signed considering players like Alan Smith?!? got a great opportunity at CM

We need additions in there and I'd be happy with cabaye/moutinho and someone like wanyama - all proven players who would cost about 40 million net - assuming we may lose Anderson

Had a heck of a shot today. Usually its funny when a professional has a shot and it goes out for a throw in. Cabaye's spooned so much it didnt have the power to go out for a throw in

Went completely missing today, and not for the first time which raises concerns for me. He is good but not as fine a player as some of the comments on here. Moutinho is more talented in my view, and more rounded. Can do just what Carrick does while also complimenting him. Would provide more stability to our defensive game.

I would much rather McCarthy be purchased than Cabaye. Younger, less expensive, potential not fully realised but schooled well under Martinez. Always been impressed with his ability he is perhaps taking more time to come out of his shell and truly express himself.....similar to Carrick at the equivalent age.

Might be a better option that Strootman

Yohan Cabaye has issued a come-and-get me plea to Manchester United and says he would be keen to work under new manager David Moyes.
The unsettled Newcastle midfielder, speaking to Canal+ in his native France, has given an intriguing interview that is likely to unsettle his current club.
Following a disappointing season in which Alan Pardew's side diced with relegation, Cabaye has been tipped to move on to bigger things.
And he has done nothing to dampen the rumours regarding a switch to Old Trafford.
When asked whether he would be ready to move there, he replied: "Yes of course, I've liked this club for a long time, I like what they do, the boss has left but they have appointed a very good successor, and he did some very good things with Everton.
"They are always well placed among the big clubs. Yes for sure it could be an interesting challenge."
PSG and Monaco have the financial clout to persuade Newcastle to sell Cabaye, who says he would listen to all offers.
"I have had no direct contact with anyone, maybe my agents are currently in the know," he added.
"As for me, I am here, listening. I like England as well. I will need to look at the situation but you never know."

Would be a cracking signing IMO. Could play with or instead of Carrick.

First of all, talkSPORT.

Secondly, I've been a massive admirer of him the past few seasons. But was a little underwhelmed with his performances the season just gone.

Also, he's no spring chicken, is he?

He was injured for most part last season, Cunto.

Yeah, he was in and out for the majority of the season. Suppose I can chalk up his performances to injury.

He's 27, so I'd probably prefer Strootman in that regards. But yeah, he's quality and an International. Probably what we need, a ready to go midfield player.

No reason we couldn't have both.

Exclusive - Yohan Cabaye Interviewed - "For The Moment I Am At Newcastle"

Despite a very up and down season blighted by periods of injury and dips in form, Yohan Cabaye’s future is constantly speculated on in the media.

Yesterday we brought you a translation of an interview that Yohan did before France’s match against Uruguay earlier this week, where he talked about the season just gone and the part he played in trying to integrate the new French signings and his struggles with depression, plus even just physically coping with getting through the season.

Interviewed by Canal+, here is the second part of our exclusive translation of the interview, when Yohan Cabaye spoke earlier this week.

(Interview with Gregory Novak from Canal+)

GN “Today we hear about your departure from Newcastle, at what stage are you, is it likely, is it really likely?”

YC “For the moment I am at Newcastle, you never know what happens in football, I am here at the moment, the season is not finished as I have still two matches (the 2 matches for les Bleus – Uruguay and Brazil), after that going on holiday can’t come soon enough to clear my head of the difficult season we have just had, and I let my agents work for me.”

GN “Can we imagine you coming back to Ligue 1, there are 2 big clubs with a lot of money – PSG last year and Monaco this year, there is also Marseille that remains a club with French roots…could we see you back in Ligue 1?”

YC “I have had no direct contact with anyone, maybe my agents are currently in the know. As for me, I am here, listening, I like England as well. I will need to look at the situation but you never know.”

GN “There are changes at a big English club – Manchester United; a change in manager, a change in players, we know it’s a club and a challenge that could interest you?”

YC “Yes of course, I like this club for a long time, I like what they do, the boss has left but they have appointed a very good successor, and he did some very good things with Everton. They are always well placed amongst the big clubs, yes for sure it could be an interesting challenge but like I said for the moment, there is nothing concrete and I am still at Newcastle.”

If/when what Cabaye has said is reported elsewhere, it will no doubt be used to say how he is angling to leave and it is a ‘come and get me’ style interview but when speaking he does sound a bit low and while he isn’t declaring undying love for Newcastle, he doesn’t appear to want to leave Newcastle.

We will only find out as and when a club makes an offer, let’s hope that isn’t on the agenda.

(Then Gregory Novak asks him how he would define/describe the first year with Deschamps. Yohan Cabaye, who is not going to shoot himself in the foot, confirms that the assessment is positive.)

YC “We have beaten some good teams, we’ve also lost matches, but our position in the group remains good. Our objective is to qualify for the World Cup. We have a few matches left to get there, but on the whole it is positive… (reading between the lines, it sounds like Yohan rated Laurent Blanc more than Deschamps!).

YC “The most important is to be in Brazil!”

27 is not that old for a midfielder. Most midfielders start coming into their own around 25-26.

I would prefer one of Gundogan, Bender, Marchisio or Vidal before him as a dynamic midfielder for our midfield. However, since it would be unlikely to price them away from their respective teams, Cabaye won't be a bad choice.

Isn't he the one who wanted to quit the game all together not long ago? Slightly ominous.

Decent player but NUQ

I disagree. He's better then everything else we've got there bar Carrick (though I think he could surpass him).

For the right price he'd be a great signing. No risk.

Suffered depression after an injury due to no winter break in the English game, if I remember correctly?

He's not good enough: put him in the same bucket as Sessegnon, Bellhanda et al. Talented players, great skill - not quite up to it for top 4 in the PL.

Hello ....Worse players than him already play for clubs of the top 4.Being good enough for the top means absolutely feck all, a player doesn't have to be a great one to play for them.

He's a good player. He does seemed to be injured a lot though.

Yep that's the way it pans out sometimes but you don't want to buy a player who isn't up to it from the get go.

I like him all action midfielder he gets stuck in and has technical quality in him also. Definitely good enough to play for us.

It would mostly depend why you'd buy that player and for what kinda role.If it's to be a back up or not but I get what you mean in this particular case.I just disagree with you.Cabaye would look better than at Newcastle that's for sure, playing alongside Carrick and that idiot of Tiote will surely feel different for the better

He would be a squad player and nothing more. We've been crying out for a CM signing for years, but by that we surely mean something that's an upgrade of what we have now? I don't see Cabaye being any better than Cleverley or Anderson in terms of quality, nor do I think he is more durable than them. Now I'm more interested in us getting Fellaini if this is a player we are showing interest in haha.

He's a good player, although these 'come and get me' type interviews very rarely lead to anything happening.

I very much doubt we've genuine interest anyway, especially after the season he just had. Mind you, he's probably a good bit cheaper this summer than the previous couple...

He's ok, I'd take him over Fellaini but I think we could develop Strootman further and Thiago is much better.

Cabaye has great technique and a good attitude. To me he just hasn't got that extra je ne sais quoi that would make you want to sign him.

I like him but I agree with this, can't see anything happening on the back of this interview. Plus I reckon Newcastle will want to sell him for silly money. He's probably their best player.
